Ce sont les actes de ce colloque que l'on trouvera dans ce livre. Les plus grands spécialistes européens de la question s'y attachent d'abord à analyser la phase initiale d'historicisation de la guerre, pendant le conflit lui-même et lors des années d'entre-deux-guerres principalement. Dans un second temps sont abordées ses multiples représentations, dans des domaines aussi différents que le témoignage combattant, le fait religieux, la création artistique, la muséographie. Un troisième axe, plus étoffé, pose la question de l'avenir de l'histoire culturelle de la Grande Guerre. Sans esquiver l'autocritique, elle trace des pistes de travail qui ne peuvent laisser indifférents les chercheurs d'aujourd'hui et de demain.
