Download or read book Smaller, Quicker, Cheaper written by Daniel A. Wagner and published by United Nations Education, Scientific & Cultural Organization. This book was released on 2011 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective use of educational assessments is fundamental to improving learning. However, effective use does not refer only to the technical parameters or statistical methodologies. Learning assessments in use todaywhether large-scale or household surveys or hybrid (smaller, quicker, cheaper or SQC)have varied uses and purposes. The present volume provides a review of learning assessments, their status in terms of the empirical knowledge base, and some new ideas for improving their effectiveness, particularly for those children most in need. It is argued here that SQC learning assessments have the potential to enhance educational accountability, increase transparency, and support a greater engagement of stakeholders with an interest in improving learning. In addition, countries need a sustained policy to guide assessment choices, including a focus on poor and marginalized populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famed feminist Marilyn French’s life-affirming saga celebrates the love and sacrifices of four generations of Polish-American mothers and daughters. With Bella Dabrowski close to death, her daughter Anastasia, who has reinvented herself as Stacey Stevens, is trying to penetrate the longstanding barriers between them to understand the woman who gave her life. Through the eyes of Stacey, a divorced, feminist New York photographer, we get to know Bella, a remarkable woman, wife, and mother. The daughter of Polish immigrants, Bella, who renamed herself Belle, clawed her way out of poverty and settled into a middle-class existence. Shifting perspectives between the two women, the reader is drawn into Belle’s life through the lean years of the Depression as well as Stacey’s recollections of her youthful marriage, a lesbian affair, and her tempestuous relationship with her own daughter, Arden. From the groundbreaking author of The Women’s Room, Her Mother’s Daughter explores past and present to reveal the complex, indestructible bonds between daughters and mothers.

Book Synopsis Networking of Theories as a Research Practice in Mathematics Education by : Angelika Bikner-Ahsbahs
Download or read book Networking of Theories as a Research Practice in Mathematics Education written by Angelika Bikner-Ahsbahs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we deal with the diversity of theories in mathematics education? This was the main question that led the authors of this book to found the Networking Theories Group. Starting from the shared assumption that the existence of different theories is a resource for mathematics education research, the authors have explored the possibilities of interactions between theories, such as contrasting, coordinating, and locally integrating them. The book explains and illustrates what it means to network theories; it presents networking as a challenging but fruitful research practice and shows how the Group dealt with this challenge considering five theoretical approaches, namely the approach of Action, Production, and Communication (APC), the Theory of Didactical Situations (TDS), the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), the approach of Abstraction in Context (AiC), and the Theory of Interest-Dense Situations (IDS). A synthetic presentation of each theory and their connections shows how the activity of networking generates questions at the theoretical, methodological and practical levels and how the work on these questions leads to both theoretical and practical progress. The core of the book consists of four new networking case studies which illustrate what exactly can be gained by this approach and what kind of difficulties might arise.
Book Synopsis Wives and Lovers by : Jane Elizabeth Varley
Download or read book Wives and Lovers written by Jane Elizabeth Varley and published by Orion Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria Stratford's birthday party for her husband David is a resounding success. It shows off their beautiful Wimbledon house, their wonderful children, their perfect lives, and it conceals the tensions and ambitions that infest their marriage. While Victoria graciously welcomes her guests, the only person missing is David himself. Victoria's sister Clara and her husband Tom are there. Unworldly and idealistic, Tom scorns David's quest for wealth. While Clara is content with her job as a university lecturer and their shabby home, she is yearning for something and Tom cannot see the growing need for happiness that may take Clara away from him. In the garden, the youngest sister Annie talks to her husband Hugo. They are ideally suited and very content with each other. The only blight on their lives is Hugo's mother, Barbara, whose jealousy and possessiveness have turned into a poisonous hatred of Annie. This one evening begins a train of events that will lead each sister down a different path - towards love, sex, grief, betrayal and happiness. Each of them will learn what it is to be a wife, a sister and a lover.
Book Synopsis International Handbook of Early Childhood Education by : Marilyn Fleer
Download or read book International Handbook of Early Childhood Education written by Marilyn Fleer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 1613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international handbook gives a comprehensive overview of findings from longstanding and contemporary research, theory, and practices in early childhood education in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The first volume of the handbook addresses theory, methodology, and the research activities and research needs of particular regions. The second volume examines in detail innovations and longstanding programs, curriculum and assessment, and conceptions and research into child, family and communities. The two volumes of this handbook address the current theory, methodologies and research needs of specific countries and provide insight into existing global similarities in early childhood practices. By paying special attention to what is happening in the larger world contexts, the volumes provide a representative overview of early childhood education practices and research, and redress the current North-South imbalance of published work on the subject.
