Download or read book Histochemistry written by Richard W. Horobin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histochemistry: An Explanatory Outline of Histochemistry and Biophysical Staining describes the histochemical staining of cells and tissues as a major tool applied in biological and medical investigations, both in basic research and in practical applications such as clinical diagnosis. The book may be considered as a guide to understanding the scientific basis of staining procedures and alternate actions to take when common methods do not proceed as expected. The first chapter gives general theoretical ideas from which most part of the book is largely organized around. As the book considers the arts and crafts making up the practice of histochemistry and biological staining, emphasis is given to the common physicochemical aspects of the technically diverse methodologies involved. Hence, the author has drawn ideas and information from physicochemically and biochemically related fields, such as chromatography, pharmacology, photography, tanning, and textile dyeing. The bulk of the book is structured around groups of practical procedures, such as fixation, staining with dyestuffs, metal impregnation, and selective extraction as a test of significance. Lastly, general essays on the usefulness of staining theories and on the problems arising from reagent impurities are given as examples. The text is suitable for students and researchers in the fields of physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. Clinical laboratory scientists and those involved in the life sciences and biotechnology will benefit from reading the book.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy by : F. W. D. Rost
Download or read book Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy written by F. W. D. Rost and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-07-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative fluorescence microscopy is concerned with making measurements from fluorescent specimens in a fluorescence microscope, by measuring fluorescence emission from a defined area or areas of a specimen. This technique is most commonly used to determine the amount of some specific substance, such as DNA, in some particular area of a cell. But it has many other uses; for example, it can be used to identify certain substances in the cell by examining their fluorescence characteristics. This book is a complete guide to this technique for all biologists. It describes the principles and applications of quantitative fluorescence microscopy and also gives much practical information about the instrumentation required. There is also a discussion of the exciting developments in confocal fluorescence microscopy which allows the three dimensional distribution of particular substances to be determined. Everyone presently using this technique, or wishing to start using it will need to read this book.

This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth edition of Histological and Histochemical Methods continues to provide a clear and consistent introduction to the techniques, description and analysis of the chemical and physical principles of fixation, tissue processing, staining, enzyme location, immunohistochemistry and other key procedures. The overall structure of the book remains unchanged, but the content has been heavily revised to update the techniques used in line with recent technological advances. Additionally, there are new sections on: Artefacts and troubleshooting Methods for microorganisms and fungi in sections Methods for various pigments and mineral deposits in tissues Methods for skeletal elements (bone, cartilage) in whole-mounts Histological and Histochemical Methods 5e is essential reading for students, lecturers, researchers and professionals using histological and histochemical techniques. From reviews: "Histological and Histochemical Methods is a tour de force wholly suited to the modern age of histology and Professor Kiernan has triumphed again. To cover so much ground clearly and concisely while including the justification of the underlying chemistry makes this book unique. There should not be a histology laboratory or an undergraduate library that does not own a copy." Biotechnic & Histochemistry 2016, 91(2): 145. "This book should be present on the bookshelves of every research or analysis laboratory where histology and histochemistry are routinely used, as an essential reference source of basic and practical information for scientists and technicians." European Journal of Histochemistry, 2016, vol. 60.

Book Synopsis Methods in Neurobiology by : Robert Lahue
Download or read book Methods in Neurobiology written by Robert Lahue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid advances in knowledge have led to an increasing interest in neuro biology over the last several years. These advances have been made possible, at least in part, by the use of increasingly sophisticated methodology. Furthermore, research in the most rapidly advancing areas is essentially multidisciplinary and is characterized by contributions from many investi gators employing a variety of techniques. While a grasp of fundamental neurobiological concepts is an obvious prerequisite for those who wish to follow or participate in this field, critical awareness and evaluation of neurobiological research also requires an understanding of sophisticated methodologies. The objective of Methods in Neurobiology is the development of such critical abilities. The reader is exposed to the basic concepts, principles, and instrumentation of key methodologies, and the application of each meth odology is placed in the special context of neurobiological research. The reader will gain familiarity with the terminology and procedures of each method and the ability to evaluate results in light of the particular features of neurobiological preparations and applications.

Book Synopsis Theory and Strategy in Histochemistry by : Hans Lyon
Download or read book Theory and Strategy in Histochemistry written by Hans Lyon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want practical information on how to use this book please refer to "Note to the Readers" p. VII. Histochemistry and cytochemistry are essential tools in biomedical research and routine service laboratories. Most texts on histochemistry fall into one of two categories: 1. Encyclopaedic texts covering all or nearly all information available on the whole or selected parts of histochemistry. 2. Reviews or surveys of methods found to be useful by the author(s). While the former category often appeals to the more philosophically inclined reader, direct guidance on the selection of technique may be difficult to find. In contrast, the latter category are often excellent sources for details on how to perform a particular method with a reasonable chance of success. Consideration of the exact mechanism of staining, of possible reasons for failure, and of alternative techniques are, however, frequently lacking. This book is an introduction to the scientific basis of histochemistry and is intended to provide a background for the selection and development of appro priate methods. It is not a "cook book" and readers expecting exhaustive methodological descriptions will be disappointed. Although most ofthe contributors to this book would not describe themselves as histochemists, they have all at some time found it essential to develop a basic understanding of histochemistry. This book contains the information they would have greatly appreciated ready access to at that time.

Book Synopsis Visualization of Nucleic Acids by : Gerard Morel
Download or read book Visualization of Nucleic Acids written by Gerard Morel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-03-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a review of the principle approaches for visualizing DNA and RNA. Using scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes, the three-dimensional image of the surface of nucleic acids can be seen at atomic-scale resolutions. Spreading methods provide useful details on structural features of isolated molecules, but the major constituent of living matter is water, and the cryomicroscope makes it possible to look at DNA in its aqueous environment. Genes can be detected simultaneously in situ in chromosomes using fluorescent probes, and also at the electron microscopic level. In cells, nucleic acids are localized and quantified by dyes; electron microscopy is used with cytochemical, immunocytological, nuclease, and in situ hybridization methods. The main potential applications for pathological studies are shown with particular aspects such as viral nucleic acids and in situ PCR.
