This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Danvers, From Its Early Settlement to the Year 1848 The Necessity of a Town History has been experienced for many years by most of the citizens of Danvers. It could have been wished that some one qualified for the task, had undertaken it before the decease of several, who carried much valuable information to the grave with them. Much that might have been preserved for Posterity has been suffered to sink into Oblivion. The compiler has sought every known source for information, has spent about a year and a half in researches, during which time he has travelled about 600 miles on foot, to different parts of Danvers and Salem, besides several other journeys, - examined twenty-thousand pages of manuscript, - perused several historical works, and made many pilgrimages to antiquated sires and matrons, and to moss grown grave-yards, where he has exercised the vocation of Old Mortality, and sought information from those tablets which the remorseless tooth of tune had nearly obscured. He believes that the appearances of imperfection in this work could not well he avoided, and that nearly all is here recorded which time has spared. lie confesses himself much indebted to Hon. Daniel P. King, John W. Proctor, Esq., Fitch Poole, Matthew Hooper, Charles M. Endicott, Matthew Stickney, and to the gentlemanly officers of the State Department, the Town Clerk, Salem City Clerk, Clerk of the Courts, Judge of Probate, the different Parish Clerks, Clergymen in Danvers, &c. Book excerpt: From their introduction in the late nineteenth century, picture postcards have been a souvenir staple in every American community. These practical, yet collectable mailers promote local businesses and tourism, and celebrate historic and scenic localities. Danvers, known as Salem Village during the infamous 1692 witch-hunt, became an independent town in the 1750s. By the twentieth century, local boosters spotlighted the town's rich architectural heritage, local institutions, and vibrant business district by producing a variety of postcard views. Ancient saltbox houses associated with the witchcraft days, eighteenth-century gambrel-roofed dwellings that sheltered Revolutionary War patriots, the mansion occupied by famed poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and the Danvers Insane Asylum, a majestic state-operated facility, were frequent postcard subjects. This book samples the best of Danvers's twentieth-century postcard heritage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Collections of the Danvers Historical Society, Vol. 1 The committee appointed to prepare the first volume of the Historical Collections of the Society, having finished the task assigned them, present the same to the members for their inspection and approval. Danvers is a large town territorially, of many villages, with varying interests. Realizing this fact, it has been the aim of your committee to present a variety of subjects, some of which will be found to be of general interest to all of the citizens of our town, and others of Special interest to those residing or who have resided in the different villages of the town. In this way we feel that this volume willbe welcomed in the homes of all our members. Whatever has happened in the past, no matter how remote or how near, is a matter of history, and this volume will be found to deal, not only with events of years long ago, but with those of recent occurrence. This Society ever holding in pleasant remembrance its founder and first president, and his work, it seemed fitting to your committee, as a tribute to his memory, that the first article therein should be one from his pen.
