Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1920s through the 1950s Maxwell Anderson was one of the most important playwrights in America. His thirty-three produced plays make him a leader among these playwrights of America's most creative era in the theater, and a number of his plays have shown a lasting vitality and importance. What Price Glory (1924) dramatized the disillusionment and horror of World War I . With Elizabeth the Queen (1929), Winterset (1935), and High Tor (1936), Anderson revived poetic drama in the modern theater. His versatility as a playwright was further reflected in the satire Both Your Houses (1933), the historical parable Joan of Lorraine (1946), and the musical play Lost in the Stars (1949). This edition of Anderson's letters spans his adult life -- from 1912, shortly after he graduated from the University of North Dakota, to 1958, just before his death. Arranged chronologically, the letters reveal in full and intimate detail the development of his career, his methods of work, his relationships with theater people, his conceptions of himself as a playwright and of the nature of the theater, and his ideas about his plays, all of which focused on an inner moral struggle. Every aspect of his work and personality emerges in these letters, which serve as an autobiography in the rough. Each letter is fully annotated, permitting the reader to become a party to the correspondence. The editor has provided an informative introduction to the letters and also a substantial chronology of Anderson's life that incorporates the first complete bibliography of his plays, poems, essays, fiction, and screenplays. An appendix includes Anderson's previously unpublished statements about his life and his plays. Dramatist in America, the first edition of letters by a major American playwright, takes on added importance for its representative quality. It reveals the cultural and theatrical conditions under which a vital generation of playwrights created this country's finest period in the drama.

Book excerpt: This “breezy” tale by the bestselling author “explores the bitterly antagonistic relationship between two sisters, and the murder mystery they become embroiled in” (Publishers Weekly). Soap opera writer Deborah Peltz can handle any kind of drama, except for her sister Sharon’s. A wedding planner in Boca Raton, Sharon thinks she has the answers to everything, but with three divorces under her belt, she should be the last person on the planet to dole out all that eyeroll-worthy advice. Normally, Deborah survives by keeping her distance, safe in the bustle of New York, but when their mother has a heart attack in Florida, she drops everything to be near her. Burying the hatchet with her sister is a challenge in itself, but when they both fall for their mother's handsome cardiologist, winning him over and earning an invite to his place becomes an obsession. But when they find him dead in his waterfront home, neither sister wants to be near the place. Now the prime suspects in his murder case, they must stick together to stay alive. Hiding out in the Bahamas may be their only chance—if they don't kill each other first… “Delightful.” —People “If you loved Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, pick up Sis Boom Bah.”—Newark Star-Ledger

Book excerpt: Hazard is a poignant, unflinching memoir of the emotional intricacies of growing up with a severely disabled sibling. Margaret Combs shows how her Southern Baptist family coped with lived reality of autism in an era of ignorance and shame, the 1950s through the 1970s, and shares her own tragedy and anguish of being torn between helping her brother and yearning for her own life. Like many siblings of disabled children, young Margaret drives herself to excel in order to make up for her family’s sorrow and ultimately flees her family for what she hopes is a “normal” life. Hazard is also a story of indelible bonds between siblings: the one between Combs and her sister, and the deep and rueful one she has with her disabled brother; how he and she were buddies; and how fervently she wanted to make him whole. Initially fueled by a wish that her brother had never been born, the author eventually arrives in a deeper place of gratitude for this same brother, whom she loves and who loves her in return.

In Press On! author CeeCee Robinson shares a powerful memoir full of raw, intimate truth and deep reflection, interspersed with poetic twists of expression. She offers a testimony to the journey she took in overcoming her own inner conflicts, the result of traumatic life experiences. Though she believed she had escaped unscathed, life-altering events caused her to wake up one day with thirty years of suppressed emotions tugging at her heart. In her voyage of self-discovery, she learned that the key to freedom can be found while navigating toward the empowerment of soul’s voice. Reshaping our perspective renews our best features—the mind, body, and soul. Only then will solutions appear to aid the healing of multidimensional brokenness. This personal narrative tells one woman’s story of rebuilding her life as she decided to live in awareness, affording the ability to embrace humanity refreshed, in the best version of herself in hopes to inspire others to do the same.

Book excerpt: Washington Post Best Books of 2005. Philadelphia Inquirer Top 10 Fiction Pick, Fall 2005 At age 67, Artie Rubin finds his world shaken to its foundation by events he cannot control. His tale his both universal and unique; it is the story of the end of things and their beginnings, of friends and family, of connections lost and of the endurance of love. The Days of Awe is a breathtaking call to living. "[Nissenson] more than holds his own in the arena of gritty, all-too-present-day realism, brilliantly conveying his characters' anxiety and suffering, their conflicting ideas, emotions and beliefs, and the love for one another that makes them so vulnerable but also lends enduring value to their menaced lives."—Wall Street Journal "Solid character writing and attention to the details of daily life make the September 11 material well motivated; as characters continue to worry, kibitz, philosophize and complain, one feels that they have a real sense of the stakes."—Publishers Weekly "A moving, thought-provoking exploration of coming to grips with mortality."—Booklist "I just finished The Days of Awe. I am too moved to move. (Even this pen.) An amazing novel. It is as if we are eavesdropping on life." —Cynthia Ozick
