Book Synopsis The Mahler Family Letters by : Stephen McClatchie
Download or read book The Mahler Family Letters written by Stephen McClatchie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of the letters that Gustav Mahler addressed to his parents and siblings survive, yet they have remained virtually unknown. Now, for the first time Mahler scholar Stephen McClatchie presents over 500 of these letters in a clear, lively translation in The Mahler Family Letters . Drawn primarily from the Mahler-Rose Collection at the University of Western Ontario, the volume presents a complete, well-rounded view of the family's correspondence. Spanning the mid 1880s through 1910, the letters record the excitement of a young man with a bourgeoning career as a conductor and provide a glimpse into his day-to-day activities rehearsing and conducting operas and concerts in Budapeast and Hamburg, and composing his first symphonies and songs. On the private side, they document his parents' illnesses and deaths and the struggles of his siblings Alois, Justine, Otto, and Emma. The letters also give Mahler's insightful impressions of contemporaries such as Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, and Hans von Bulow, as well as his personal feelings about significant events, such as his first big success--the completion of Carl Maria von Weber's Die drei Pintos in 1889. In the fall of 1894, the character of the letters changes when Justine and Emma come to live with Mahler in Hamburg and then Vienna, removing the need to communicate by letter about quotidian matters. At this point, the letters relay noteworthy events such as Mahler's campaign to be named Director of the Vienna Court Opera, his conducting tours throughout Europe, and his courtship of Alma Schindler. The Mahler Family Letters provides a vital, nuanced source of information about Mahler's life, his personality, and his relationships. McClatchie has generously annotated each letter, contextualizing and clarifying contemporary historical references and Mahler family acquaintances, and created an indispensable resource for all Mahlerists, 19th-century musicologists, and historians of 19th-century Germany and Austria.

Download or read book The Clairmont Family Letters, 1839 - 1889 written by Sharon Joffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together the unpublished letters of the extended Clairmont family, for the first time. The letters, housed in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle at the New York Public Library, inform our understanding of the Shelley-Godwin circle through the experiences and thoughts of their descendants. The correspondence also enables us to see into the contemporary social history of nineteenth-century families living in Europe and Australia, dealing with subjects such as the conflicts in Europe, woes in the European financial markets, and the effects of Australian pioneer life on immigrants to that country. The Clairmont Family Letters, 1839–1889 improves upon scholarship made by other Shelley and Clairmont collections and is furnished with editorial notes and apparatus from Dr. Sharon Joffe. These volumes will be of significant interest to scholars in British Romanticism.

Book Synopsis Historical Chinese Letter Writing by : Daniel Z. Kadar
Download or read book Historical Chinese Letter Writing written by Daniel Z. Kadar and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dániel Z. Kádár was awarded with the Academy Award for Young Outstanding Scholars by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for this book. Letter writing is a pivotal yet neglected medium of historical Chinese communication. The epistolary format is key to sinological research. As historical letters have a specific vocabulary and rhetorical structure it is difficult to read them without the supporting apparatus of specialised study. This compendium fills the gap in Chinese studies by providing a bilingual Chinese-English edition of a corpus of Chinese letters, prepared for advanced students of Classical Chinese as well as academics with an interest in historical Chinese epistolary art. The book has a broad and general introduction, systematically constructed vocabulary sections as well as detailed grammatical and philological explanations. It focuses on Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) letter writing, a high point of pre-1911 epistolary activity in Chinese, and will appeal to Chinese scholars and Sinologists at a broad range of academic levels.
Book Synopsis In the Wake of Lewis and Clark by : Larry E. Morris
Download or read book In the Wake of Lewis and Clark written by Larry E. Morris and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Larry E. Morris complements the compelling story he began with The Fate of Corps, named a History Book Club selection and a Choice magazine Outstanding Academic Title. Illustrating how Thomas Jefferson’s vision of a sea-to-sea empire gave rise to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Morris in turn shows how the expedition impacted a host of fascinating individuals: John Colter, the first European to see Yellowstone, who helped William Clark create his master map of the West; John Jacob Astor, the prominent fur-trade entrepreneur who launched the second American trek to the Pacific; Ramsay Crooks, an “Astorian” adventurer present for the discovery of the Tetons, Hells Canyon, and South Pass who later became one of the most important merchants in the history of the fur trade; Thomas Hart Benton, a North Carolina native who went west after nearly killing Andrew Jackson in a gunfight and became the US Senate’s most powerful voice for Western expansion—and the father-in-law of “the Pathfinder,” John C. Fremont; and General Stephen Watts Kearny, whose conquest of California during the Mexican War fulfilled Jefferson’s vision of a nation that spanned the continent.

Download or read book The Family Letters of Victor and Meta Berger, 1894-1929 written by Michael E. Stevens and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Family Letters of Victor and Meta Berger provide an insider's view of congressional, labor and party politics as well as a glimpse into the marriage and family life of a prominent Wisconsin couple. Victor Berger helped create a well-organized political machine in Milwaukee that engineered his election to the U.S. House of Representatives six times and controlled the mayor's office for almost 50 years. His wife, Meta, an activist in her own right, served as a member of the Milwaukee school board and of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, and vigorously advocated on behalf of woman suffrage and peace. Mixing commentary on public affairs with family news and love notes, The Family Letters demonstrate how Victor and Meta were both interested observers as well as actors who sought to shape events in early twentieth century America.
