Millions of young people stopped dating and embraced something new called "courtship" which promised to usher singles into marriage while avoiding the dangers of dating. It sounded wonderful. The problem? It didn't work. The resulting singleness epidemic left a generation with broken hearts and little hope. In Courtship In Crisis, Thomas Umstattd Jr. explains where the courtship crisis came from, and why it failed. More importantly, he lays out an alternative model that works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from her first London assembly to her wedding day was the narrow span of autonomy for a middle-class Englishwoman in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. For many women, as Katherine Sobba Green shows, the new ideal of companionate marriage involved such thoroughgoing revisions in self-perception that a new literary form was needed to represent their altered roles. That the choice among suitors ideally depended on love and should not be decided on any other grounds was a principal theme among a group of heroine-centered novels published between 1740 and 1820. During these decades, some two dozen writers, most of them women, published such courtship novels. Specifically aiming them at young women readers, these novelists took as their common purpose the disruption of established ideas about how dutiful daughters and prudent young women should comport themselves during courtship. Reading a wide range of primary texts, Green argues that the courtship novel was a feminized genre—written about, by, and for women. She challenges contemporary readers to appreciate the subtleties of early feminism in novels by Eliza Haywood, Mary Collyer, Charlotte Lennox, Samuel Richardson, Frances Brooke, Fanny Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane West, Mary Brunton, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen—to recognize that these courtship novelists held in common a desire to reimagine the subject positions through which women understood themselves.

Book excerpt: Today more than ever before in human history, the dependency for comfort along with the indispensable necessity of moral, emotional and spiritual encouragement is in conflict with the iniquitous disposition of this present day society. The spirit of this world continues to resist and debilitate the divinely instilled organic appetite that is part of human original nature, personality and character. Even though the surrounding world tries to convince us as if we are unlovable, worthless and unforgivable, this volume will inspire our sensibleness so as to persist with the needed confidence, for finding or seeing the respectable extent of our own worth on the supreme pedestal of God’s given image and moral strength. We are exquisitely designed and divinely designated to remain everlastingly precious in love, goodness and reassurance. Even though our own heart tends to discourage and condemn us, this comforting volume will empower our vision to discern the true meaning and purpose of human existence, by authenticating the greatness of our value with eternity in view. The structure of human nature, character and personality would not be reliable pertaining to fundamental moral strength, lasting comfort and true happiness, unless exist a supreme purpose to appreciate the reason of holding on to such an objective. In actual fact, without this perpetual purpose along with love, faith and hope that galvanize our mind, heart and soul, there would not dwell the needed optimism for the author to initiate such painstaking descriptive work with the view to put in paper the proceeding five volumes of Authenticity, Comfort, Love, Perception and Dedication.

Book excerpt: This book has as main objective to give wise advices to young Christians, which may help them to live their courtship relationships as it is supposed to be with a son of God who is holy, holy, holy—in other words, to live their courtship in holiness and with purpose. This book is aimed at youth who have a serious commitment to holiness. Each word of this work is dedicated to those who courageously have decided to hold the instinct to the wisdom, seeking to do in their courtship everything that is pure, all that is worthy, and everything that is of good name so that the Lord will be glorified by their good testimony. Each word of this book is also directed to young people who are willing to strive to avoid being swept away by the current of worldly thoughts of perverts or the unwary, even if it means having to endure ridicule, rejection, and offense from those who, through those attitudes, want to force the youth to be just like them. And finally, every word in this book is aimed at young people who love to fulfill their role as salt of the earth and light of the world in a society that needs to be preserved from evil and be enlightened with good works.
