Book Synopsis Hiram Hill Homestead by : Bill Turgeon
Download or read book Hiram Hill Homestead written by Bill Turgeon and published by Mill City Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 2008 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As they approached the age of 50, Bill and Kathy Turgeon knew they were missing something in their lives, but didn't know what. Amazingly, the answer was hanging on their living room wall: A painting depicting a rural homestead in a blaze of fall colors. Painted by Kathy years before the couple ever met, the picture inspired them to buy a piece of land, leave their jobs, move north, and pursue their common dream of a life close to the land. This book chronicles their search for a place in the country and their many, often humorous, adventures in building a homestead. Prospective homesteaders will find not only an engaging story about this couple, but also valuable insights on how to build a homestead, move toward greater self-reliance, and achieve simple, debt-free living. In the end, this is a story about how this empty-nest couple, vaguely dissatisfied with their safe, comfortable lives, broke away, took some risks, and realized what Kathy's painting had been telling them all along for so many years: The land will help you discover your true selves; let go and live!

Book Synopsis Upper Saco River Valley by : Diane Barnes
Download or read book Upper Saco River Valley written by Diane Barnes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1725, the Saco River was the main artery for the Pequawket Indians traveling in canoes to and from the Atlantic. Soon thereafter came trappers, followed by loggers, who harvested the colossal white pine and sent the logs floating down the river to sawmills mushrooming all along its course. By 1871, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad had reached Fryeburg, fifty miles from Portland, thus linking the Upper Saco River with Boston and beyond. Soon, a steady stream of summer visitors began arriving in the region and the White Mountains beyond. Upper Saco River Valley: Fryeburg, Lovell, Brownfield, Denmark, and Hiram visits the days when logs floated down the river and trains thundered up and down the valley. The first stop is in Fryeburg, home of Fryeburg Academy and the Fryeburg Fair, the oldest and largest fair in Maine. Next is Lovell and its many lovely brick homes and Kezar Lake. The book then journeys to Brownfield, largely depicted before the devastating fire of 1947. Denmark was the home of Rufus Ingalls, the quartermaster general under Ulysses S. Grant. The volume ends in Hiram, the home of a famed Revolutionary War general who was also the grandfather of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Throughout the region and throughout this book are rarely seen vintage photographs of the Saco River and the nine covered bridges that once spanned it.

This book was released on 2008-07-13 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 16-years-old, Melanson spent the summer waitressing at the summer conferences at Northfield School for Girls. The New England backdrop included the 125-room Schell Chateau. Her adventures include a grand tour of the Chateau under the cloak of darkness and is documented with photos and floor plans. She pleaded with her parents to send her to the boarding school, but their answer was "No". Nevertheless she retained an attachment to the school. When she became an adult she began giving to the alumnae fund because she believed in the ethic of the school. One year a flustered alumnae secretary phoned asking what class she had been affiliated with, presuming the undocumented alum had probably flunked out. Her answer was "Why 1964!" After that she was invited to reunions and her "news" appeared in the alumnae publications. In 2004, came the announcement that the Northfield campus was closing. That was the spark that prompted her to return for "her" 40th Reunion. This is that story.
