Book Synopsis Letters to his Parents by : Theodor W. Adorno
Download or read book Letters to his Parents written by Theodor W. Adorno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'My dears: this is but a brief note to welcome you to the new world, where you are now no longer all too far away from us. ‘ So begins Adorno’s letter to his parents in May 1939, welcoming them to Cuba where they had just arrived after fleeing from Nazi Germany at the last minute. At the end of 1939 his parents moved again to Florida and then to New York, where they lived from August 1940 until the end of their lives. It is only with Adorno’s move to California at the end of 1941 that his letters to his parents start arriving once more, reporting on work and living conditions as well as on friends, acquaintances and the Hollywood stars of his time. One finds reports of his collaborations with Max Horkheimer, Thomas Mann and Hanns Eisler alongside accounts of parties, clowning around with Charlie Chaplin, and ill-fated love affairs. But the letters also show his constant longing for Europe: Adorno already began to think about his return as soon as the USA entered the war. Adorno’s letters to his parents – surely the most open and direct letters he ever wrote – not only afford the reader a glimpse of the experiences that gave rise to the famous Minima Moralia, but also show Adorno from a previously unknown, very personal side. They end with the first reports from the ravaged Frankfurt to his mother – who remained in New York – and from Amorbach, Adorno’s childhood paradise

Download or read book Hansel and Gretel written by Rika Lesser and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-02-01 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Grimm tale illustrated by 1998 Caldecott medalist Paul O. Zelinsky is once again available in hardcover. Originally published in 1984, Zelinsky's paintings for Hansel and Gretel are as compelling as his later work and will captivate readers with their mysterious beauty, emotional power, and brilliant originality. Each spread brings to life a world as rich and real as our own—detailed, colorful, sensual—yet filled with the unearthly shadowed magic of the Hansel and Gretel folktale. Whether portraying the fear and anguish of children abandoned by their parents, the delicious sumptuousness of a candy house, or the joy of being reunited with one's family, the artist captures the subtle nuances of emotion and the tactile quality of the physical world with exquisite accuracy and elegance. The hauntingly spare retelling of this perennial favorite by the poet Rika Lesser perfectly complements the vivid storytelling of Zelinsky's artwork. Once again this gifted artist gives us a unique interpretation of a beloved fairy tale, allowing us to both see it anew and rediscover its eternal truths.

Book Synopsis Adorno: A Guide for the Perplexed by : Alex Thomson
Download or read book Adorno: A Guide for the Perplexed written by Alex Thomson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or, indeed, downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to fathom, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material. One of the most influential philosophers and cultural theorists of the twentieth century, Theodor Adorno poses a considerable challenge to students. His works can often seem obscure and impenetrable, particularly for those with little knowledge of the philosophical traditions on which he draws. His tendency to confound what we take for common sense, and to attack what he sees as the dominant trends in twentieth century European and American culture, can pose very particular difficulties for the reader. 'Adorno' is an engaging and accessible account of his thought that does not patronise or short-change the reader. Those new to Adorno - and those who have struggled to make headway with his work - will find this an invaluable resource - clearly written, comprehensive and specifically focused on just what makes Adorno difficult to read and understand. The text is structured around key themes in Adorno's work and provides clear and stimulating accounts of topics including the central place of the aesthetic in Adorno's writing, his much misunderstood essays on popular culture and the importance of freedom in Adorno's philosophy.
