Why I am a Hindu (2018) is a masterful reflection on the impact of religion on one’s personal and national identity. In Why I am a Hindu, Shashi Tharoor, one of India’s leading politicians, offers a personal reflection on how his relationship with Hinduism shapes both his personal and national identities along with his political ideology. Unpacking the 4,000-year-old history of his religion in an accessible manner for beginners, Tharoor charts the progression of Hinduism in modern day and attacks the Hindutva movement which he argues is perverting the sacred tradition of Hinduism today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Indian should know at least the essence of The Mahabharata and The Gita, irrespective of their religion because it teaches more of management principles in life. In this busy world, we do not have time to read even essential books. Also, most of the youngsters do not have the opportunity to read our scriptures. With that idea, this book was created to have a reading in 100 minutes. If you are interested and need more clarifications, you can always refer to standard books. Importance is given to express the concepts and morals rather than the entire story. In the end, even the principles of The Gita are explained in a nutshell. In fact, religion can only be experienced and not taught. This book endeavors to demonstrate how Hinduism has been wrongly quoted by many and it aims to bring forth the truth. There are so many myths also. When Atma is same in all living beings can there be a superior one or an inferior one. Even a dog is not inferior to human being. How can God separate human beings and bring castes? If so, is He a God? We can’t blame God for all the egoistic mistakes done by humans in the name of God. God has no form. But Hinduism says you can make innumerable forms as you like as everything is God. In Mahabharata all these questions are answered, including who is a Brahmin? Can a Brahmin by birth superior? Etc. The approach to various religions may differ. That is the nature of God’s creation so that there is diversity in everything. Imagine the number of languages we have. Like that, even though the ultimate principles of religions are same, they were modified simplified as per the norms of the local people. The problem with simplification is that it creates controversy. The advantage of simplicity is that it is easily understandable. People take only the problems in their hand and cause in-justice to their own religion and humanity. If people are egoistic of religion, they are one of the worst criminals in the world, because all religions teach peace, love and harmony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a much-needed thematic and historical introduction to Hinduism, the religion of the majority of people in India. Dr Flood traces the development of Hindu traditions from their ancient origins, through the major deities of Visnu, Siva and the Goddess, to the modern world. Hinduism is discussed as both a global religion and a form of nationalism. Emphasis is given to the tantric traditions, which have been so influential; to Hindu ritual, which is more fundamental to the life of the religion than are specific beliefs or doctrines; and to Dravidian influences from south India. An Introduction to Hinduism examines the ideas of dharma, particularly in relation to the ideology of kingship, caste and world renunciation. Dr Flood also introduces some debates within contemporary scholarship about the nature of Hinduism. It is suitable both for the student and for the general reader.
