Book excerpt: "Probably the most awesome peaks in the world--certainly the highest--are those of the Himalaya; even the name, from the Sanskrit words for 'abode of the snows,' speaks of their remoteness. Crowning the Himalaya (and the linked Karakoram range) are fourteen peaks above 8000 metres in height: the Sivalaya, or 'abode of the gods.' In this book, Louis Baume presents the only comprehensive chronology of journeys, expeditions and ascents involving these highest peaks, and an extensive bibliography of books relating to them."--Book cover.

Book excerpt: Dare believe in big dreams, ideals grand and vast; Dare believe in infinite nature of thine own thought, And possibilities, opportunities on the morrow, harness; For as thou believe, thou surely shall receive, surely attain; Amenhotep XVI believes in following exquisite dreams, pursuing perfection and splendor, and plucking the watercress of one’s destiny from the dark depths. Within three hundred inspirational poems and prayers shared to spur and inspire all to embrace the divine magic of their preordained nature, he lyrically encourages others to actualize their God-given talents; awaken their true identity as the creator of their life; harness and harvest the power of imagination; cultivate the ardent mind; keep the embers of great hope alive; and move past obstacles with courage, resilience, perseverance, persistence, and the fortitude of a threshing ox. Throughout his diverse collection, Amenhotep provides gentle reminders to not only live a life full of deep meaning, virtue, and true purpose, but also with joy and full felicity as heaven decreed. The 18th Letter is a collection of poems and prayers inspired by the wisdom provided within the three books of Holy Scripture.
Book Synopsis Where Histories Reside by : Priya Jaikumar
Download or read book Where Histories Reside written by Priya Jaikumar and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Where Histories Reside Priya Jaikumar examines eight decades of films shot on location in India to show how attending to filmed space reveals alternative timelines and histories of cinema. In this bold “spatial” film historiography, Jaikumar outlines factors that shape India's filmed space, from state bureaucracies and commercial infrastructures to aesthetic styles and neoliberal policies. Whether discussing how educational shorts from Britain and India transform natural landscapes into instructional lessons or how Jean Renoir’s The River (1951) presents a universal human condition through the particularities of place, Jaikumar demonstrates that the history of filming a location has always been a history of competing assumptions, experiences, practices, and representational regimes. In so doing, she reveals that addressing the persistent question of “what is cinema?” must account for an aesthetics and politics of space.

Book Synopsis The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places by : John Keay
Download or read book The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places written by John Keay and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great explorers were the celebrities of their day - the romance and danger of their daring expeditions captured the public imagination and the world's headlines to an extraordinary degree. Not all of them lived to tell the tale, of course, but those who emerged triumphant from jungle, desert or polar wasteland were hailed as if returning from beyond the grave. Journalists vied for their stories and publishers rushed their first-hand accounts of exciting and dangerous journeys into print for a wide and voracious readership. Acclaimed travel historian John Keay introduces this selection of the best of these first-hand narratives, including those of John Ross and John Franklin, writing about their experiences in the Arctic; Richard Burton's account of his search for the source of the Nile; John Speke on Lake Victoria; David Livingstone and Henry Stanley's adventures in central Africa; Alexander McKenzie's first crossing of America and Meriwether Lewis's encounter with the Shoshonee; Robert Peary and Roald Amundsen's voyages to the poles; and the poignant last words of William Wills in Australia and Robert Scott's In Extremis. Keay includes the experiences of four remarkable twentieth-century explorers: Hiram Bingham on the discovery of Machu Picchu; Wilfred Thesiger on Arabia's Empty Quarter; Edmund Hillary on reaching the summit of Everest; and Harry St John Bridger Philby facing despair and defeat in the Arabian desert.
