Download or read book The Hill Station and an Indian Diary written by James Gordon Farrell and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic novel by a Booker Prize-winning author To the cool of the Simla hills comes a reluctant Dr McNab, with his wife and young niece. For Emily, romance is in the air. For the mysterious Mrs Forester, there is scandal brewing. And for the Bishop of Simla, rainclouds are not the only storms on the horizon. The Hill Station is the novel on which J.G. Farrell was working at the time of his tragically early accidental death. It demonstrates powerfully what a great loss to world literature this was.
Book Synopsis The Magic Mountains by : Dane Keith Kennedy
Download or read book The Magic Mountains written by Dane Keith Kennedy and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perched among peaks that loom over heat-shimmering plains, hill stations remain among the most curious monuments to the British colonial presence in India. In this engaging and meticulously researched study, Dane Kennedy explores the development and history of the hill stations of the raj. He shows that these cloud-enshrouded havens were sites of both refuge and surveillance for British expatriates: sanctuaries from the harsh climate as well as an alien culture; artificial environments where colonial rulers could nurture, educate, and reproduce themselves; commanding heights from which orders could be issued with an Olympian authority. Kennedy charts the symbolic and sociopolitical functions of the hill stations over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, arguing that these highland communities became much more significant to the British colonial government than mere places for rest and play. Particularly after the revolt of 1857, they became headquarters for colonial political and military authorities. In addition, the hill stations provided employment to countless Indians who worked as porters, merchants, government clerks, domestics, and carpenters. The isolation of British authorities at the hill stations reflected the paradoxical character of the British raj itself, Kennedy argues. While attempting to control its subjects, it remained aloof from Indian society. Ironically, as more Indians were drawn to these mountain areas for work, and later for vacation, the carefully guarded boundaries between the British and their subjects eroded. Kennedy argues that after the turn of the century, the hill stations were increasingly incorporated into the landscape of Indian social and cultural life. Book excerpt: When Mahnaaz saw Aftaab, he said to her: When I see you I get lost in you. I feel how lucky am I, whose sweetheart is a girl like you? You seem to me like a fairy -- extremely beautiful or pari paikar, with angelic and innocent face, eyes as blue as that of very deep and a clear lake, pure like water flowing over the falls originating from the hilltops. In the garden of the world you are beauty of the garden, and all the beauty of the world is with your presence. God has created you in His own image in a majestic and artistic manner. You are a unique creation of the Creator with no parallels in the entire world. You seem to me as if you are daughter of the moon or binat e- mahtaab, who has come down to the earth to play with me The girls working in the guesthouse were Yati, Nessa, and Sundri. The most beautiful was Sundri. Someone very correctly gave her a nickname, Ghunchah, meaning the bud of a rose flower. But she was very unfortunate. Her husband died just two years after the marriage. Most of the women who visited her for condolence advised her to have patience. But she knew how difficult it was and only that one knew who had gone through it. When I saw my bride for the very first time I said to her, Zarina! If you like that our married life may be comfortable and enviable, please try to be obedient to my dear mother just like me. And also love my younger brothers and sister, and keep them happy. Chewing paan (betel leaf) and looking at Saleem Rekha said, Shehzadae! Merhaba (welcome Prince). Nargis, Bunto, Nina, Bulbul and Kasturi are since long waiting for you. The very first song, which Nargis sang while the other girls were dancing, was a very popular Punjabi Folk song which means: Oh! My sweetheart where had you spent the night? My heart was lost in your thoughts throughout the long and tiring night. Sunil proposed to construct a new Town to be named as Soergnagar (a town in paradise) to help the poor and needy to fulfill their basic needs: Rooti (bread), Kupra (clothes) aur (and) Makaan (home). And there would be no restriction, whatsoever, to shooders (untouchable). They would be treated equally and fairly as all others. After waiting for two hours and making several rounds of the Accountant Generals (A. G.) Office building in Lahore, Gul Khaan, Bacha Khaan and Shair Gul Khaan were tired. Shair Gul said, Yeh khanzir ka bachha, Bhatti kahaan chupp gia. Yeh zalil to soodh khoor Pathanoo ko bhee dugha dae gia. This son of a pig, Batti, where did he hide himself? This mean fellow succeeded in cheating even the money lender Pathaans who eat the interest earned. That borrowed money Bhatti used to spend on hiring model girls for his nights. He told me, He is doing so to take revenge from the women, because my entire life has been ruined by a woman my stepmother (Soteeli Maan).

Book Synopsis Regulating Information Asymmetry in the Residential Real Estate Market by : Devin Lin
Download or read book Regulating Information Asymmetry in the Residential Real Estate Market written by Devin Lin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conducts a detailed examination of the current form of the Hong Kong residential property regulatory system: the 2013 Residential Properties (Firsthand Sales) Ordinance (Cap 621). The author sheds light on how the new legislation promotes a number of values including information symmetry, consumer protection, the free market and business efficacy. It provides a detailed account of how the regulatory mechanism has evolved over the past three decades to catch unconsscionable sales tactics (such as selective information and/or misrepresentation of location, size, completion date and past transactions) and monitor sales practices in order to protect the interests of stakeholders in this ever-changing first-hand residential property market. This book breaks down this complicated subject matter by focusing a number of chapters each on a specific attribute of the residential property on sale. It then examines the various channels through which the information is communicated to the prospective buyer and discusses misrepresentation of the key information in sales of residential properties as criminal liability. The tension between consumer’s rights on one hand and the pursuit of free market principles on the other is but one example of the conflicting values thoroughly discussed in the book, others include superstition vs. modernization and clarity vs. flexibility. Aimed at those with an interest in consumer protection and transparency-orientated legislation in commercialized real estate transactions, this book seeks to provide an in-depth discussion of the latest trends and directions of travel.
