Book excerpt: This book is a testimonial and a guide to a better existence for those seeking happiness through faith, our natural world, creation and a living God. Although somewhat biographical it is also a guide to how a living, breathing belief system can enhance living and ultimately dying, knowing that you have fulfilled the promise of creation and The Creator. This book also includes the memoirs of Anna Maude Murphy. This account of her husband, the Reverend William A. Tetley (b.1897 d.1942) is very compelling and historical at the same time. Above all this book is a call to faith and reconciliation with creation and our Creator.

Book excerpt: Something happened there that is too rare among men: We touched the soul, and we touched heaven. The encounter put fire in my bones and brought a deep humility to know that God was at work in this crazy project of mine.Hiking from Georgia to Maine sounds incredulous to most. To Lon Chenowith, it is a journey that calls him into the wild--a journey that reveals true tests of faith and will in the direst circumstances. What began as a dream in his teens to trek the Appalachian Trail takes flight with a preliminary hike with his two young boys from Amicalola Falls to Unicoi Gap. The initial intrigue wears off, and Lon quickly realizes he will be making a long, arduous journey alone, save for a few hiking partners and unique characters met along the way. As a section-hiker, Lon, best known as the Arkansas Traveler, spans the course of fourteen years, climbing 237 mountains in a backcountry with a culture all its own. The romance of trekking across the mountains quickly wears off, and the presence of God teaches him perseverance and faith. While at times lonesome and hard, the undeniable urge to return to nature keeps Lon climbing and chronicling his Five Million Steps.

Book excerpt: From "the world's greatest tour guide," a deeply-researched, captivating journey through the rich history of Christianity and the winding paths of the French and Italian countryside that will feed mind, body, and soul (New York Times). "What a wondrous work! This beautifully written and totally clear-eyed account of his pilgrimage will have you wondering whether we should all embark on such a journey, either of the body, the soul or, as in Egan's case, both." --Cokie Roberts "Egan draws us in, making us feel frozen in the snow-covered Alps, joyful in valleys of trees with low-hanging fruit, skeptical of the relics of embalmed saints and hopeful for the healing of his encrusted toes, so worn and weathered from their walk."--The Washington Post Moved by his mother's death and his Irish Catholic family's complicated history with the church, Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers to force a reckoning with his own beliefs. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity to explore the religion in the world that it created. Egan sets out along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome, and travels overland via the alpine peaks and small mountain towns of France, Switzerland and Italy, accompanied by a quirky cast of fellow pilgrims and by some of the towering figures of the faith--Joan of Arc, Henry VIII, Martin Luther. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium. A thrilling journey, a family story, and a revealing history, A Pilgrimage to Eternity looks for our future in its search for God.

Book excerpt: Bear! Ken whispered the word as he stopped hiking. Ken and I were on the Foothills Trail and a mother bear with three cubs was thirty feet in front of us. We stood motionless, frozen in fear. What should we do? Of course we prepared for every scenario and had read hiking manuals about what to do, but here we were facing a real mother bear. She noticed us and then barked a few times as she bounced up and down ever so slightly. Yes, bears can make a barking noise. We stood quietly and hoped prayerfully and expectantly that she would not charge. Finally, she slowly walked into the mountain laurel. We had encountered a mother bear and come away unharmed. Those few minutes seemed like forever and the fear had drained us. It took several minutes for us to move forward, but we did. This marked our memories and we tell it from time to time for humor and to remember the hike. As we told this story and more men joined our hikes other amazing events happened. Over the course of eighteen years there was the shattering water bottle, the miraculous and mesmerizing night with fireflies, the fall over rocks, the slide down a huge boulder, the persistent and annoying skunk, the embarrassing underwear and the turkey surprise to name a few. We enjoyed the stories so much that I wrote them down and realized each had a truth embedded. The events are contained in six chapters that convey formative categories of the Christian life. They are Christian Beginnings, Community, Growth, Responsibility, Living, and Christian Celebration. The bear encounter illustrates a biblical truth about dealing with fear. Our first day atop Springer Mountain my water bottle shattered into pieces. I was sprayed with water. This story serves as an analogy to the waters of baptism and the beginning of our faith journey. The other twenty eight stories convey various essential teachings. One illustrates faith as a gift, another the power of leadership. There is the story of temptation, the story of healing, one o

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a very strange set of circumstances, my family and I found ourselves walking down a trail. This trail led us to a wonderful experience that brought us closer to God than we could ever imagine. That trail was long and hard, literally decades of unexplainable illnesses and hardships that brought us an understanding of ourselves and how we fit into His plan. Those hardships made us believe that we were living in hell on earth. We lost hope, which caused us to commit some costly sins and mistakes in our lives. But then something miraculous happened that changed us forever. I would like to say that we found God, but that is not the way it happened. God found us. One sunny day, my dad was walking on a hike-and-bike trail near my home, and something happened. God began walking with Dad on that trail, talking with him while they walked. Those conversations were kept in a journal that my dad kept. From that journal, we wrote a book about those experiences so that everyone could learn what we learned.

Book excerpt: My interest in the Appalachian Trail (AT) began as a travel adventurer, but as I experienced God's Nature touching my soul and renewing my spirit, the AT hiking trips became a series of faith journeys over 25 years. AT enthusiasts will enjoy detailed Trail descriptions and 30 photos of the Trail. Each one of the 40 reflection devotionals addresses a specific experience in my spiritual growth journey. The devotionals are grounded in scriptural quotes. Every devotional includes personal Trail experiences and AT stories of other trekkers. A closing prayer follows the devotional. A question then guides the reader to further personal thoughts. I hiked 2,000 AT miles! More importantly, I found answers to my quest; a life journey grounded in trusting Jesus Christ. Beth is the owner of Life Maps Coaching and author of Life Maps Workbook, Lifestyle Goal Setting Journey for Women. Book excerpt: Here is the story of a 5,000,000-step journey of faith and determination! Beyond My Limits is not only the story of Charles Anderson's mission to section-hike the entire Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Mount Katahdin, Maine, but also to share Christ with his fellow hikers in hostels, shelters, on the trail, or wherever he found them. As he touched others' lives along the way with a message of hope and salvation, a personal inner journey took place. Trusting, obeying, believing, and worshiping God in the beauty and challenges of the wilderness rewarded him with moments of astounding joy and a deepened relationship with his Creator. The overriding message of our culture is to take the easy road, stay within our comfort zones, and avoid risk. But God calls Christians to venture by faith beyond comfort and ease so that they can experience the amazing purposes God has for their lives. This exciting account of the author's epic 2,160-mile journey of determination and faith will introduce readers to a world of adventure on the Appalachian Trail. It will inspire them to take up that challenging mission to which God is calling them -- "beyond their limits." - Publisher.
