This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing technologies allow for the condition evaluation of bridge decks at near highway speed. Data collection at near highway speed for assessment of the top of the concrete deck and proof of concept testing for the underside of the deck was conducted for surface and subsurface evaluation. 3-D photogrammetry was combined with passive thermography to detect spalls, cracks and delaminations for the top of the concrete bridge deck, while active thermography was investigated for bottom deck surface condition assessment. Successful field demonstrations validated results comparable to MDOT inspections. Recommendations for immediate implementation for condition assessment of the top of a concrete deck are included for introducing the BridgeViewer Remote Camera System into current bridge inspections to provide a photo inventory of the bridge deck captured at 45mph and above using GoPro cameras. The combined optical photogrammetry (3DOBS) and passive thermography technologies provide an objective analysis of spalls, cracks and suspected delaminations while traveling at near highways speed. Using the same 3DOBS technology with higher resolution cameras and slower speeds, cracks can be detected as small as 1/32 in. Laboratory and field demonstrations show active thermography would benefit from further development as a remote sensing technology for condition assessment on the underside of the bridge deck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The safety, maintenance and repair of bridges and buildings depend on effective inspection and monitoring techniques. These methods need to be able to identify problems often hidden within structures before they become serious. This important collection reviews key techniques and their applications to bridges, buildings and other civil structures. The first group of chapters reviews ways of testing corrosion in concrete components. Given their continuing importance and vulnerability to decay, the next series of chapters describes ways of testing wood components within civil structures. A final group of chapters looks at visual and acoustic techniques and their use to assess bridges in particular. Inspection and monitoring techniques for bridges and civil structures is an invaluable reference for civil engineers involved in safety inspection, maintenance and repair of bridges and civil structures. Reviews key inspection and monitoring techniques and their applications to bridges, building and other civil structures Edited by a leading authority in the field

Book Synopsis The Economic Impact of Implementing Nondestructive Testing of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks in Indiana by : Benjamin Taylor

This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deck is among the most expensive components of a bridge over its lifetime because of the frequent and costly maintenance and rehabilitation required. Currently, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) performs visual inspections of a bridge deck as the principal means of determining its condition, which enables the inspector to definitively document the surface condition while the unseen condition below the deck surface is left to the inspector's expert judgement. To compensate for this lack of data, INDOT supplements visual inspections with programmatic scheduling for major work actions, which is very effective for INDOT but costly. In this continuing era of funding shortfalls, INDOT commissioned this study to investigate nondestructive testing (NDT) methods to fill their data gap to inform its work action decision. The NDT methods have been shown to accurately locate corrosion and delamination and are a cost-effective alternative. A project level comparison between the NDT methods was performed to show which method, as well as which combination of methods, were the best choices from a cost perspective. A project level analysis of 30 bridge decks was performed, and those costs were compared to the costs of the current INDOT programmatic schedules. Finally, the analysis was expanded to the network level, which included the entire bridge inventory in Indiana. The results of this study indicate that implementing the NDT methods is cost-effective for INDOT at both the project and network levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil infrastructure systems such as highways and bridges represent the skeleton of any nation. The condition of the transportation infrastructure in the United States is aging and deteriorating, and requires huge financial and human resources for its rehabilitation and maintenance. If a damaged element remains undetected, the structural integrity and serviceability of the bridge would get worse over time. Therefore, monitoring bridge conditions is extremely crucial for keeping bridges in good condition. A bridge deck is one of the main elements of the superstructure of a bridge. A bridge deck evaluation includes an inspection report, recommendations for repairs and estimated budgetary costs for each of the repairs. It will also prioritize the repairs, so that with fund limitation, the most pressing issues can be done first. Several Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques have been developed to evaluate bridge condition accurately and effectively. NDT techniques have the potential to quickly and reliably provide the needed information about under-the-surface conditions and material properties of bridge deck. But independent evaluations are needed to determine their best use and to validate their effectiveness under a variety of conditions. In this study, a review of different types of NDT techniques for bridge decks, their applications, performance, limitations, equipment and test procedures are presented. Also, recommendations regarding the best techniques for a particular application are provided. The outcome of this study is to get a better understanding of strengths and limitations of bridge inspection techniques in defects and mechanical properties of concrete bridge decks evaluation. The results can be beneficial for transportation agencies to select inspection methods properly and effectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete bridge deck overlays have been used in the United States since 1960 to extend the service life of deteriorated concrete bridge decks and improve reliability. Concrete bridge decks with overlays suffer various types of deterioration, so it is necessary to identify and assess the effectiveness of different nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies in the laboratory under controlled conditions and in the field under actual conditions. This report provides an overview of seven types of widely used overlays: asphalt with a liquid membrane, asphalt with a fabric membrane, asphalt without a membrane, silica fume-modified concrete, latex-modified concrete (LMC), epoxy polymer concrete, and polyester polymer concrete. This report identifies and ranks available and promising NDE technologies to assess the performance of different types of overlays and concrete bridge decks. This report describes laboratory validation on overlays for nine commonly used NDE technologies. The nine NDE technologies are: sounding, ultrasonic surface waves (USW), impact echo (IE), ultrasonic tomography (UT), impulse response (IR), ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity (ER), half-cell potential (HCP), and infrared thermography (IRT). This report details the results of laboratory tests validating the NDE technologies for the seven different types of overlays. Field validation using the RABITTM bridge deck assessment tool and manual testing equipment was also performed. Results from the study on which this report is based indicated that GPR was the most effective method for detecting defects in underlying concrete specimens through both bonded and debonded overlays; however, GPR could not detect overlay debonding. Results also showed that USW, IE, and UT were effective stress-wave-based methods for detecting defects under bonded overlays but not asphalt overlays. Researchers found that asphalt overlays at low temperatures (i.e., 32°F or below) improved the applicability of
