Book excerpt: In this book, we try to provide a practical, down-to-earth guide for those who are involved in language learning and teaching. We hope that this book will be a useful reading for those who would like to incorporate higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)-enhancing techniques in their teaching practice. We set out from the position that, although it is hardly doubtful that it is at the heart of education, critical thinking is in reality often not given its due attention in pedagogy, particularly in language education. This book offers readers some practical advice on how to implement HOTS in their own practice. It has been written to take the reader through each technique with the ultimate goal of promoting HOTS step-by-step. In the introductory chapter, we present an overview of the theory behind HOTS, its definition, its relation to Bloom’s Taxonomy, its two dimensions (critical thinking and reflective thinking), and the ideas of some influential thinkers in this area. The subsequent chapters present six HOTS-enhancing techniques that classroom teachers can draw from, namely graphic organizers, critical discourse analysis, argumentation, emotion regulation and emotional intelligence enhancing techniques, reflective journals, and mindfulness-based strategies. As the book draws on a wide-ranging review of literature with exercises for direct use with language learners, we hope that this provides both theoretical and practical support for the teaching process to help language learners become effective critical thinkers. The compilation of the ideas in this book took us a long time, over a decade. Something that takes such a long time requires much engagement and life experience; so did this book.

Book excerpt: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) require students to engage higher level thinking skills and language use to activate their understanding of content/text. They are designed to be academically rigorous for all students, and are especially so for students who are English language learners (ELL). In ELLs: Thinking Skills and CCSS, Dr. Estee Lopez provides evidence-based instructional approaches as well as best practices for helping ELLs meet the CCSS for ELA. The six-page (tri-fold) guide is structured around the six shifts embodied in the CCSS for English Language Arts: 1. Increasing reading of informational text/balancing informational and literary texts 2. Knowledge in the disciplines 3. Staircase of complexity 4. Text-based answers 5. Writing from sources 6. Academic language The guide explains each shift, its implications for ELLs, and what is required of teachers. For each shift, the author lists best practices, examples of scaffolding for ELLs, and things that teachers and administrators must to do create conditions that ensure that ELLs succeed.

Rather than be mere consumers of knowledge, students must now become creators, critics, and communicators of ideas across disciplines. Yet in order to take on these new and exciting roles, many students need daily teaching with an extra emphasis on accelerating their academic communication skills. Common Core Standards in Diverse Classrooms: Essential Practices for Developing Academic Language and Disciplinary Literacy describes seven research-based teaching practices for developing complex language and literacy skills across grade levels and disciplines: using complex texts, fortifying complex output, fostering academic interaction, clarifying complex language, modeling, guiding, and designing instruction. Most important, you will find clear descriptions and examples of how these essential practices can-;and should-;be woven together in real lessons. The book: Clarifieshow to support the learning of complex language that students need for reaching Common Core and other standardsProvides practical ways to realize the instructional shifts needed with the implementation of new standards in diverse classroomsIncludes frameworks and descriptions on how to develop students' complex language, speaking, and writingHelps maximize strategies and tools for building system-wide capacity for sustained growth in the practicesCommon Core Standards in Diverse Classrooms is a concise guide for helping us improve our practices to strengthen two vital pillars that support student learning: academic language and disciplinary literacy.

The chapters balance theoretical foundations, practical applications, and useful resources for developing materials. The first half of this book defines flipped learning and academic English, describes how it supports English language learning, and explains the role of technology, as well as issues with accountability and feedback. The second half of the book then makes connections between the theoretical issues presented in the first three chapters and the practical applications in the following chapters, which provide lesson descriptions and assessment ideas for language learning contexts with or without access to technology. The book concludes with a list of tools and technologies for developing materials and activities, as well as additional resources for professional development and further exploration of flipped English language learning.
