Download or read book Higher Goals for America written by Stuart S. Nagel and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1989 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bring together a number of ideas that relate to the analysis of public policy issues for the presidential campaigns of 1988. These issues are also relevant to 1992 and thereafter since the emphasis is on long-term concerns. The book is organized in terms of the need for higher goals for America, incentives for achieving higher goals, improving American constitutional effectiveness, coordinating the public and private sectors and public policy substance methods. Beginning with goals on a high level of generality or applicability, the author then discusses middle range means for achieving them, with an emphasis on economic incentives, political structures, and legal rules. Specific policy problems and systematic methods for analyzing them are also included. One important feature of this book is that it is concerned with issues relevant to the presidential campaigns of Democrats and Republicans, or liberals and conservatives within the political parties. Contains charts and tables.

Book Synopsis Asian Americans and the Shifting Politics of Race by : Rowena Robles
Download or read book Asian Americans and the Shifting Politics of Race written by Rowena Robles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Americans and the Shifting Politics of Race examines the political and discursive struggles around the dismantling of race-based admissions policies in an elite public high school in San Francisco. The book analyzes the arguments put forth by plaintiffs in and the media's depiction of the case, Brian Ho, Patrick Wong, & Hilary Chen v. SFUSD. The Ho lawsuit, filed by a group of Chinese Americans, challenged race-based admissions policies that were intended to ensure diversity by giving special consideration to African-American and Latino students. Robles argues that the Ho plaintiffs exploited the dominant racial construction of Asian Americans as model minorities to portray themselves as victims of discrimination, and relied on contrasting constructions of Black and Latino students as undeserving and unqualified beneficiaries of affirmative action. The decision in favor of the plaintiffs effectively ended school desegregation, racial balance, and affirmative action in San Francisco. In order to examine the consequences of the Ho decision on student attitudes, Robles spent four years studying and observing the first cohort of students to enter the high school after race was eliminated from admissions considerations.
Book Synopsis Science and Technology for America's Progress by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Science and Technology for America's Progress written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new Obama administration and the 110th Congress elected in November 2008 will face immediate challenges. Events will not permit a leisurely leadership transition. The prompt appointment of a Presidential science adviser and the nomination of top officials in the new administration with the knowledge and experience to address complex problems will be essential. The concerns of the nation regarding jobs and economic growth, health care, national security, energy, and the environment demand informed action. Each of these concerns-from national security, economic development, health care, and the environment, to education, energy, and natural resources-is touched in essential ways by the nation's science and technology enterprise. This is the fourth in a series of books from the National Academies on the presidential appointment process, each delivered during a presidential election year with the goal of providing recommendations to the President-elect about appointing his senior science and technology leadership and pursuing sustained improvements in the appointments process.
Book Synopsis Culture and Well-Being by : Ed Diener
Download or read book Culture and Well-Being written by Ed Diener and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: material boundaries capture cultural effects? The articles contained in this volume offer initial answers to most of these questions. The culture and well-being questions are of fundamental importance to understanding in the entire eld and to scienti c knowledge in the behavioral s- ences as a whole. Unless we understand what is universal and what is speci c, we cannot hope to understand the processes governing well-being. Unfortunately, our scienti c knowledge in most behavioral science elds, including the study of we- being, has been built on a narrow database drawn from westernized, industrialized nations. This means that we have only a little knowledge of whether our ndings are generalizable to all peoples of the globe and to universal human psychol- ical processes. Fortunately, during the last decade my students and I, as well as others working in this area, have rapidly expanded our knowledge of well-being vis-a-vis ` culture. The rst attempt to summarize the ndings in this area came in 1999 with Culture and Subjective Well-Being, a book edited by Eunkook Suh and Diener. The current volume represents a renewed effort to give a broad overview of major ndings in this area and to point to the important directions for future research. Composition of This Volume I am very pleased with the articles presented in this volume because I believe that they represent true advances in our fundamental understanding of subjective we- being.
