Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.

Five materials were investigated: silicon carbide, silicon, pyrolytic graphite, rutile, and gallium phos phide. The gage factors of these materials were measured in the temperature range of 25 C (77 F) to 750 C (1382 F). The gage factor of silicon carbide was found to be very small even at room temperature, and none of the other mate rials appeared to offer any possibility of re taining a useful gage factor at 2000 F. How ever, several results which may well be of prac tical value were obtained: the usefulness of silicon as a strain gage was extended to about 650 C (1202 F) by a new contacting process, silicon carbide was found to be a good tempera ture sensor over a wide range of temperature, and rutile was found to be a good oxygen sensor over a fairly wide range of elevated temperature. The gage can be used in situations involving variable temperatures as well as a constant temperature during the loading and unloading cycles. For dynamic strain measurements at temperatures up to 1500 F, a coating material developed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Fort Belvoir Laboratories has been found to be superior to other cements tested. A high degree of success has been obtained with this material in mounting gages on turbine blades and combustor liners of turbojet engines.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of a six month study that addressed specific issues to transfer the Pd-13Cr static strain sensor to a gas turbine engine environment. The application issues that were addressed include: (1) evaluation of a miniature, variable potentiometer for use as the ballast resistor, in conjunction with a conventional strain gage signal conditioning unit; (2) evaluation of a metal sheathed, platinum conductor leadwire assembly for use with the three-wire sensor; and (3) subjecting the sensor to dynamic strain cyclic testing to determine fatigue characteristics. Results indicate a useful static strain gage system at all temperature levels up to 1350 F. The fatigue characteristics also appear to be very promising, indicating a potential use in dynamic strain measurement applications. The procedure, set-up, and data for all tests are presented in this report. This report also discusses the specific strain gage installation technique for the Pd-13Cr gage because of its potential impact on the quality of the output data.
