Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huge technological progress in high-temperature brazing has made in the last few decades. This chapter reassesses the topic. It describes compositional and structural specifics of base metal (BM) classes at high temperatures. The classification of brazing filler metals (BFMs) is given, with some new compositions. In choosing optimal BFMs the metallurgical background is built on phase diagrams of BM and BFM and potential interactions. Novel methods of BFM placements, joint loading and heat treatment are covered. Rapidly solidified amorphous BFMs are described. The modern outlook on metallurgical paths of joint formation and an understanding of brazing mechanisms are provided. Finally, recent examples of advanced applications are given, particularly in the aerospace and automotive industries and in energy conservation and environment protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important brazing application is the production of cutting and machining tools. This chapter provides an overview of brazing alloys for the joining of cutting materials. Process-related problems and solutions are presented and discussed. High strength values can be achieved with the right filler alloy and joint design. Most cemented carbides consist of a hard material such as tungsten carbide and a metallic binder. Due to the high carbide content, wetting and bonding reactions have to be monitored. Addition of active elements can help to induce a wetting reaction. Brazing ceramic cutting materials requires the use of active filler alloys to achieve a wetting reaction. The chapter reviews the alloys required. A joint can be weakened by interfacial effects or mismatches in physical properties. Employing the right filler metal with an adapted brazing process can significantly improve joint quality. Stress calculations based on the finite element method contribute to better joint design with reduced stress levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past ten years, brazing technology has undergone sweeping changes. Yet because there are so few practitioners who understand the finer points of the technology, many of the companies that use brazing as their preferred metal-joining procedure are failing to use it to best effect. Fully updated to reflect the latest practices, this second edition of Industrial Brazing Practice helps you develop the most effective brazing procedure for your particular needs. It reveals the six simple rules of brazing and explains how they impact essential brazing procedures. These rules effectively form the bedrock of problem-solving procedures in this field. Written by an expert with more than 50 years of experience, the book combines fundamental principles with practical, hands-on advice. The author highlights the intrinsic versatility of the brazing process and covers a wide range of conditions and technical possibilities. He walks you through the nine stages of the process audit, from identifying service conditions, to selecting materials and design, to assessing process complexity. A chapter answers frequently asked questions such as "is it possible to braze ceramics" and "what is MIG brazing?" New in This Edition Information on new ISO specifications for brazing filler materials New alloy and flux codes New production developments in available fuel-gases for brazing, such as SafeFlame New sections on carbon potential of furnace atmosphere and quality control parameters for vacuum brazing New production methods in aluminum brazing Expanded coverage of interfacial corrosion in stainless steels More case studies This comprehensive book contains the information needed to enable you to develop best-practice solutions to the daily brazing problems you may encounter in the production shop. Packed with flowcharts, illustrations, and case studies, it is an invaluable reference for anyone involved in industrial brazing.

Book excerpt: Brazing processes offer enhanced control, adaptability and cost-efficiency in the joining of materials. Unsurprisingly, this has lead to great interest and investment in the area. Drawing on important research in the field, Advances in brazing provides a clear guide to the principles, materials, methods and key applications of brazing. Part one introduces the fundamentals of brazing, including molten metal wetting processes, strength and margins of safety of brazed joints, and modeling of associated physical phenomena. Part two goes on to consider specific materials, such as super alloys, filler metals for high temperature brazing, diamonds and cubic boron nitride, and varied ceramics and intermetallics. The brazing of carbon-carbon (C/C) composites to metals is also explored before applications of brazing and brazed materials are discussed in part three. Brazing of cutting materials, use of coating techniques, and metal-nonmetal brazing for electrical, packaging and structural applications are reviewed, along with fluxless brazing, the use of glasses and glass ceramics for high temperature applications and nickel-based filler metals for components in contact with drinking water. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Advances in brazing is a technical guide for any professionals requiring an understanding of brazing processes, and offers a deeper understanding of the subject to researchers and engineers within the field of joining. Reviews the advances of brazing processes in joining materials Discusses the fundamentals of brazing and considers specific materials, including super alloys, filler metals, ceramics and intermetallics Brazing of cutting materials and structural applications are also discussed

Book excerpt: In this Phase I SBIR program, Foster-Miller demonstrated the feasibility of an innovative joining technique for two-dimensional carbon/carbon (C/C) composite materials using active braze alloys. Traditionally, brazing of C/C composites required use of high- temperature vacuum furnaces. Vacuum brazing required expensive capital equipment with a limited working area and brazing cycles on the order of several hours to more than a day. The Foster-Miller technique utilized a controlled atmosphere induction brazing to reduce the brazing times to minutes and increased the interlaminar strengths by using of the proprietary Foster-Miller z-pin reinforcement technique. The use of the out-of-furnace brazing concept combined with z-direction reinforcements showed strengths of up to 1550 psi compared to the vacuum furnace braze joint strengths of 1153 psi. The constituents of the purging gases as well as proprietary solid oxygen getters were adjusted to eliminate all oxygen while brazing, thus minimizing problems associated with oxidation. This program analyzed the advantages of the oxygen getters in addition to the effect of braze layer thicknesses on strengths of the brazed C/C joints. The follow-on Phase II program will focus on transitioning the brazing technology to aerospace and terrestrial thermal management and structural applications of C/C composites.
