An experimental study was started on the slot, annular slot, and scimitar annnnnas operated at room temperature. A proposed ground plane assem bly, consisting of a small heated central section and a large thermally isolated metal plane, was designed and tested successfully on the CAL an tenna range. Preliannary design of the central or thermal section of the ground plane was com pleted and construction was started. A materials investigation and fabrication techniques study has been initiated in order to determine which dielectric materials are suitable for high tem perature use, to determine suitable conducting coatings, and to develop coating and sealing techniques for high temperature operation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental effort was continued on high-temperature models of waveguide slot, annular slot, and printed spiral antennas. Two separate alumina windows sealed across the open end of a columbium S-band waveguide have developed cracks after cooling. It appears that the nominally matched thermal coefficients of expansion of these materials are not exact enough to prevent fracture of thin alumina windows. An annular slot antenna assembly employing a corrugated metal disk/alumina window has been electrically matched. This assembly will provide information on the suitability of deformable assemblies to accommodate unmatched thermal expansion coefficients of materials. Fused silica and alumina substrates and fired-on platinum conductors have been used in hightemperature spiral antenna assemblies. The low loss of these substrates produces rapidly fluctuating VSWR values (with frequency), and the high dielectric constant of the alumina causes an apparent narrowing of antenna bandwidth. Power-handling tests of thoriated nickel obstacles in a waveguide showed no unusual performance as a function of temperature. (Author).

Book excerpt: This quarterly report summarizes engineering effort investigating the design of antennas which are suitable for prolonged operation at a temperature of 2000 F or higher. A niobium S-band waveguide asshas been ordered, and it will be used as an open-ended waveguide an tenna mounted in a ground plane. A ceramic window will be used to seal the aperture. A two-inch thick foamed concrete radome was made, and silicon carbide heating elements were inserted through it. An input of about 3 kw to the heating elements was sufficient to heat a stainless steel S-band waveguide with an alumina window mounted in a ground plane to a temperature of 2000 F. VSWR measurements were made on this (unmatched) assembly over a temperature range of 70 to 2000 F. The VSWR of 6.0 at room tempera ture increased to 6.8 at 2000 F. Work continues on the study of materials whose characteristics may be useful in this program. (Author).

Book excerpt: A study program is discussed which includes a survey of industry and government laboratories and was undertaken to determine the state of the art in dealing with problems of high power levels in reentry antenna design. A laboratory program to develop techniques for testing dielectric materials for effects on RF transmission is also considered, with emphasis on high power applications in space and reentry flights. The study program resulted in a set of guidelines for avoiding breakdown in antenna design. A discussion of temperature effects on dielectric breakdown is also given. From the laboratory program, a description is presented of techniques for (1) heating with a carbon arc image furnace, (2) temperature measurement (using thermocouples and an infrared pyrometer), (3) mass spectrometric monitoring of outgassing, (4) testing for RF breakdown in both heated dielectrics and the dielectric/air and dielectric/plasma interfaces. Data and observations are reported from technique development using candidate shuttle materials falling into three categories: (1) lightweight refractory foams, (2) dense RF window materials, and (3) ablative materials.
