Book excerpt: Polymers and polymer-based particulate composites are becoming increasingly used in aerospace structural applications, where they experience complex, non-static loads. Correspondingly, the high strain rate mechanical properties are of increasing importance. This paper investigates the properties of epoxy - bisphenol-A/diethanolamine epoxy (Epon 826/DEA) - and epoxy-based particulate composites across strain rates from 10(exp -3) to 10(exp 5) /s. The samples were tested using Instron, traditional split Hopkinson pressure bars (SHPBs) and a miniaturized SHPB for ultra-high strain rates. Additionally, the epoxy samples are tested with dynamic mechanical analysis to look at the effects of time-temperature superposition on the strain rate effects in the samples. The results of the testing are compared to the Hasan-Boyce model for polymers, which has shown good agreement with other epoxy studies, to develop constitutive equations for these materials.

Book excerpt: The effects of reactive metal particles on the microstructure and mechanical properties of epoxy-based composites are investigated in this work. To examine these effects castings of epoxy reinforced with 20-40 vol.% Al and 0-10 vol.% Ni were prepared, while varying the aluminum particle size from 5 to 50 microns and holding the nickel particle size constant at 50 microns. In total eight composite materials were produced, possessing unique microstructures. The microstructure is quantitatively characterized and correlated with the composite constitutive response determined from quasi-static and dynamic compressive loading conditions at strain-rates from 1e-4 to 5e3 /s. Microstructures from each composite and at each strain rate were analyzed to determine the amount of particle strain as a function of bulk strain and strain rate. Using computational simulations of representative microstructures of select composites, the epoxy matrix-metallic particle and particle-particle interactions at the mesoscale under dynamic compressive loading conditions were further examined. From computational simulation data, the stress and strain localization effects were characterized at the mesoscale and the bulk mechanical behavior was decomposed into the individual contributions of the constituent phases. The particle strain and computational analysis provided a greater understanding of the mechanisms associated with particle deformation and stress transfer between phases, and their influence on the overall mechanical response of polymer matrix composites reinforced with metallic particles. The highly heterogeneous composite microstructure and the high contrasting properties of the individual constituents were found to drive localized deformations that are often more pronounced than those in the bulk material. The strain rate behavior of epoxy is shown to cause a strain rate dependent deformation response of reinforcement particle phases that are typically strain rate independent. Additionally, the epoxy matrix strength behavior was found to have a higher dependence on strain rate due to the presence of metal particle fillers. Discrepancies between experimental and simulation mechanical behavior results and these findings indicate a need for epoxy constitutive models to incorporate effects of particle reinforcement on the mechanical behavior.

Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to continue the experimental study of the effect of strain rate on mechanical response (deformation and failure) of epoxy resins and carbon fibers/epoxy matrix composites, and to initiate a study of the effects of temperature by developing an elevated temperature test. The experimental data provide the information needed for NASA scientists for the development of a nonlinear, rate dependent deformation and strength models for composites that can subsequently be used in design. This year effort was directed into testing the epoxy resin. Three types of epoxy resins were tested in tension and shear at various strain rates that ranges from 5 x 10(exp -5), to 1000 per second. Pilot shear experiments were done at high strain rate and an elevated temperature of 80 C. The results show that all, the strain rate, the mode of loading, and temperature significantly affect the response of epoxy.Gilat, AmosGlenn Research CenterSTRAIN RATE; EPOXY MATRIX COMPOSITES; EPOXY RESINS; MECHANICAL PROPERTIES; TORSIONAL STRESS; DEFORMATION; SHEAR STRAIN; NONLINEARITY; HIGH TEMPERATURE TESTS; STRESS-STRAIN DIAGRAMS; TENSILE TESTS; STRUCTURAL FAILURE

Book excerpt: A unidirectional graphite epoxy material (AS4/3501-6) was characterized at strain rates ranging from 5 x 10(exp 6) s(exp -1) to 5(exp -1), at room temperature and at 128 C. Results are presented in the form of stress-strain curves to failure. The longitudinal properties remain nearly unchanged with strain rate and temperature. The transverse modulus increases with strain rate but decreases with temperature. The transverse strength and transverse ultimate tensile strain have a positive rate sensitivity at low rates, which changes to negative at intermediate rates and returns to positive rate sensitivity at the highest rates tested. A temperature-time equivalence principle was applied and master curves were obtained for the transverse mechanical properties. The in-plane shear modulus and in-plane shear strength have a positive rate sensitivity. The ultimate intralaminar shear strain has a positive rate sensitivity at low rates, which changes to negative at high rates. At the elevated temperature of 128 C, the ultimate shear strain is 25 to 30 percent higher than the room temperature value, but its strain rate dependence is moderate. Yaniv, G. and Daniel, I. Polymer adhesives may be used to join a large variety of material combinations: metal-metal, metal-polymer, metal-ceramic, and so on. Thermosets, such as epoxies, are now widely used as structural matrices for high-performance composites and as adhesives in joints. The properties that can be improved by forming a composite material include strength, stiffness, corrosion resistance, wears resistance, attractiveness, weight, fatigue life, temperature dependent behavior, and thermal conductivity Particulate composite materials are composed of two phases. The first phase is termed matrix, which is continuous and surrounds the other phase, which is often called the dispersed phase In this study, the mechanical (bending and tensile adhesion force) and thermal (thermal conductivity) properties were studied. Particulate composites consist of epoxy as a matrix with metal (Al, Cu, and Fe) and metal oxides as particle fillers.

Book excerpt: Polymers are becoming increasingly used in aerospace structural applications, where they experience complex, non-static loads. Correspondingly, the mechanical properties at high strain rates are of increasing importance in these applications. This paper investigates the compressive properties of Epon 826 epoxy resin cured with diethynolamine (DEA) across strain rates from 10( -3) to 10(4) s( -1). Specimens were tested using an Instron mechanical testing machine for static loading, traditional split Hopkinson pressure bars (SHPBs) for high strain rates, and a miniaturized SHPB for ultra-high strain rates. Additionally, the material was tested using dynamic mechanical analysis to determine the effects of time and temperature equivalences on the strain rate behavior of the samples. The experimental data is used to fit the Mulliken-Boyce model, modified for one-dimension, which is able to capture the compressive mechanical properties over a range of strain rates.

Book excerpt: With aircraft and aircraft engine manufacturers’ goal to create lighter more efficient components, there has been a trend of replacing traditional aircraft materials such as aluminum and titanium with various composites. The high strength to weight ratio, and application specific manufacturing of composites, make them excellent candidates for components such as fan blades, engine cases, fuselages, and even parts of wings. However, from the rigorous testing that must be passed to certify airworthiness, comes a need for computational modeling of these composite components to greatly reduce the costs incurred from manufacturing to final testing. Some of the most costly testing comes from the blade out engine test to prove that a fan blade dislodged from the rotor will be contained by the engine case. When attempting to model an impact situation, where the force is applied transversely to the case, it becomes necessary to know the properties of the polymer matrix, because it is the primary factor affecting the strain rate dependency and failure of the composite as a whole.

Book excerpt: Static and dynamic elastic moduli in flexure were measured for a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A cured with metaphenylenediamine and some particulate composites with this polymer as the matrix. If it is assumed that these materials have tensile moduli which are about 0.925 of their compressive moduli, as has been noted for another epoxy system, dynamic moduli determined at very low strain values by a free-free flexural resonance technique appear to be very nearly equal to the tensile moduli in static flexure. However, little correlation was observed between the dynamic mechanical properties and other static properties such as flexural strength. This is partially attributed to the difference in stress patterns in the static and dynamic tests.
