One of the motivations for the symposium was to capture the state of the world of supercomputers and their performance in the 1970s. What are present trends and what might the future hold? The symposium was to bring together workers from the hardware, software, and algorithm areas, since all three aspects are crucial for the success of a computer system. As all three aspects are crucial for the success of a computer system, the editors felt that these proceedings would be useful for students and practitioners of high speed computer system design and use.

Book excerpt: The scope of the present book is to offer the most efficient tools for the vectorization of serial computer programs. Here, by vectorization we understand the adaptation of computer programs to the special architecture of modern available vector computers to exploit fully their potential, which will often result in remarkable performance improvements. The book is written primarily for users working in the various fields of computational physics, for scientists as well as for programmers running their jobs on a vector computer. The text may, however, also be of value to those who are interested in numerical algorithms. Although the examples discussed in chapter 9 have been taken from Computational Fluid Dynamics, the numerical methods are well-known, and are applied in many fields of Computational Physics. The book is divided into four parts. After a short introduction which outlines the limits of conventional serial computers in contrast to the possibilities offered by the new vector machines, the second part is addressed to the discussion of some main features of existing computer architectures. We restrict ourselves to the vector computers CRAY-1S and CDC-CYBER 205, although, in the meantime, many vector and parallel computers and array processors are available such as DENELCOR's Heterogeneous Element Processor (HEP), ICL's Distributed Array Processor (DAP), SPERRY UNIVAC's Array Processing System (APS), STAR TECHNOLOGIES ST-l00, FLOATING POINT SYSTEMS' Array Processor (FPS), FUJITSU's FACOM VP-l00 and VP-200, HITACHI's Integrated Array Processor (lAP), HITACHI's S 810/10 and S 810/20 and others.

Book excerpt: Both algorithms and the software . and hardware of automatic computers have gone through a rapid development in the past 35 years. The dominant factor in this development was the advance in computer technology. Computer parameters were systematically improved through electron tubes, transistors and integrated circuits of ever-increasing integration density, which also influenced the development of new algorithms and programming methods. Some years ago the situation in computers development was that no additional enhancement of their performance could be achieved by increasing the speed of their logical elements, due to the physical barrier of the maximum transfer speed of electric signals. Another enhancement of computer performance has been achieved by parallelism, which makes it possible by a suitable organization of n processors to obtain a perform ance increase of up to n times. Research into parallel computations has been carried out for several years in many countries and many results of fundamental importance have been obtained. Many parallel computers have been designed and their algorithmic and program ming systems built. Such computers include ILLIAC IV, DAP, STARAN, OMEN, STAR-100, TEXAS INSTRUMENTS ASC, CRAY-1, C mmp, CM*, CLIP-3, PEPE. This trend is supported by the fact that: a) many algorithms and programs are highly parallel in their structure, b) the new LSI and VLSI technologies have allowed processors to be combined into large parallel structures, c) greater and greater demands for speed and reliability of computers are made.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition, parallel computing technology has gained considerable momentum. A large proportion of this has come from the improvement in VLSI techniques, offering one to two orders of magnitude more devices than previously possible. A second contributing factor in the fast development of the subject is commercialization. The supercomputer is no longer restricted to a few well-established research institutions and large companies. A new computer breed combining the architectural advantages of the supercomputer with the advance of VLSI technology is now available at very attractive prices. A pioneering device in this development is the transputer, a VLSI processor specifically designed to operate in large concurrent systems. Parallel Computers 2: Architecture, Programming and Algorithms reflects the shift in emphasis of parallel computing and tracks the development of supercomputers in the years since the first edition was published. It looks at large-scale parallelism as found in transputer ensembles. This extensively rewritten second edition includes major new sections on the transputer and the OCCAM language. The book contains specific information on the various types of machines available, details of computer architecture and technologies, and descriptions of programming languages and algorithms. Aimed at an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level, this handbook is also useful for research workers, machine designers, and programmers concerned with parallel computers. In addition, it will serve as a guide for potential parallel computer users, especially in disciplines where large amounts of computer time are regularly used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with problems of modern effective algorithms for the numerical solution of the most frequently occurring elliptic partial differential equations. From the point of view of implementation, attention is paid to algorithms for both classical sequential and parallel computer systems. The first two chapters are devoted to fast algorithms for solving the Poisson and biharmonic equation. In the third chapter, parallel algorithms for model parallel computer systems of the SIMD and MIMD types are described. The implementation aspects of parallel algorithms for solving model elliptic boundary value problems are outlined for systems with matrix, pipeline and multiprocessor parallel computer architectures. A modern and popular multigrid computational principle which offers a good opportunity for a parallel realization is described in the next chapter. More parallel variants based in this idea are presented, whereby methods and assignments strategies for hypercube systems are treated in more detail. The last chapter presents VLSI designs for solving special tridiagonal linear systems of equations arising from finite-difference approximations of elliptic problems. For researchers interested in the development and application of fast algorithms for solving elliptic partial differential equations using advanced computer systems.

Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held in Cetraro, Italy during 6-17 June 1983. The title of the ASI was Computer Arehiteetures for SpatiaZZy vistributed Vata, and it brouqht together some 60 participants from Europe and America. Presented ~ere are 21 of the lectures that were delivered. The articles cover a wide spectrum of topics related to computer architecture s specially oriented toward the fast processing of spatial data, and represent an excellent review of the state-of-the-art of this topic. For more than 20 years now researchers in pattern recognition, image processing, meteorology, remote sensing, and computer engineering have been looking toward new forms of computer architectures to speed the processing of data from two- and three-dimensional processes. The work can be said to have commenced with the landmark article by Steve Unger in 1958, and it received a strong forward push with the development of the ILIAC III and IV computers at the University of Illinois during the 1960's. One clear obstacle faced by the computer designers in those days was the limitation of the state-of-the-art of hardware, when the only switching devices available to them were discrete transistors. As aresult parallel processing was generally considered to be imprae tieal, and relatively little progress was made.

Book excerpt: The year 2019 marked four decades of cluster computing, a history that began in 1979 when the first cluster systems using Components Off The Shelf (COTS) became operational. This achievement resulted in a rapidly growing interest in affordable parallel computing for solving compute intensive and large scale problems. It also directly lead to the founding of the Parco conference series. Starting in 1983, the International Conference on Parallel Computing, ParCo, has long been a leading venue for discussions of important developments, applications, and future trends in cluster computing, parallel computing, and high-performance computing. ParCo2019, held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 10 – 13 September 2019, was no exception. Its papers, invited talks, and specialized mini-symposia addressed cutting-edge topics in computer architectures, programming methods for specialized devices such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and graphical processing units (GPUs), innovative applications of parallel computers, approaches to reproducibility in parallel computations, and other relevant areas. This book presents the proceedings of ParCo2019, with the goal of making the many fascinating topics discussed at the meeting accessible to a broader audience. The proceedings contains 57 contributions in total, all of which have been peer-reviewed after their presentation. These papers give a wide ranging overview of the current status of research, developments, and applications in parallel computing.

Book excerpt: While the architecture of present-day parallel supercomputers is largely based on the concept of a shared memory, with its attendant limitations of common access, advances in semicoductor technology have led to the development of highly parellel computer architectures with decentralized storage and limited connections in which each processor possesses high bandwidth local memory connected to a small number of such architectures, enabling cost-effective high-speed parallel processing for large volumes of data, with ultra-high throughput rates. Algorithms suitable for implementation on systolic arrays find applications in areas such as signal and image processing, pattern matching, linear algebra, recurrence algorithms and graph problems. This book provides an insight into the implementation of systolic arrays and gives a comprehensive overview of the techniques and theories contributing to the design of systolic algorithms.

Book excerpt: The original motivation for the development of digital computers was to make it possible to perform calculations that were too large to be attempted by a human being without serious likelihood of error. Once the users found that they could achieve their initial aims, they then wanted to go into greater detail, and to solve still bigger problems, so that the demand for extra computing power has continued unabated, and shows no sign of slackening. This book is an attempt to describe some of the more important techniques used today, or likely to be used in the near future, to perform arithmetic within the computing machine. There are, at present, few books in this field. Most books on computer design cover the more elementary methods, and some go into detail on one or two more ambitious units. Space does not allow more. In this text the aim has been to fill this gap in the literature. In selecting the topics to be covered, there have been two main aims: first, to deal with the basic procedures of arithmetic, and then to carry on to the design of more powerful units; second, to maintain a strictly practical approach. The number of mathematical formulae has been kept to a minimum, and the more complex ones have been eliminated, since they merely serve to obscure the essential principles.

Book excerpt: The International Workshops on "The Use of Supercomputers in Theoretical Science" have become a tradition at the Univer sity of Antwerp, Belgium. The first one took place in 1984. This volume combines the proceedings of the second work shop (December 12, 1985), of the third (June 16, 1987) and of the fourth (June 9, 1988). The principal aim of the International Workshops is to present the state-of-the-art in scientific high speed computa tion. Indeed, during the past ten years computational science has become a third methodology with merits equal to the theo retical and experimental sciences. Regretfully, access to supercomputers remains limited for academic researchers. None theless, supercomputers have become a major tool for scientists in a wide variety of scientific fields, and they lead to a realistic solution of problems that could not be solved a decade ago. It is a pleasure to thank the Belgian National Science Foundation (NFWO-FNRS) for the sponsoring of all the workshops. These workshops are organized in the framework of the Third Cy cle "Vectorization, Parallel Processing and Supercomputers", which is also funded by the NFWO-FNRS. The other sponsor I want to thank is the University of Antwerp, where the workshops took place. The University of Antwerp (UIA), together with the NFWO-FNRS, are also the main sponsors of the ALPHA-project, which gives the scientists of Belgium the opportunity to obtain an easy supercomputer connection.
