Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1-3 September 1997, a workshop on "High Speed Body Motion in Water" was held at the Institute of Hydromechanics, Kiev, Ukraine. The workshop was divided in five sessions: hydrobionics, boundary layer flows, supercavitating flows, air-water penetration and control of cavitation. This report gives a summary of the presented lectures. The workshop was intended to improve the contacts between European/American and Ukrainian/Russian scientists and succeeded in this. The presented lectures were theoretical as well as practical and gave more insight in the behavior of high speed body motion in water. However, still not everything is clearly understood and further research is recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Speed Flow is a text-book suitable for undergraduates, postgraduates, and research-workers in fluid dynamics. It covers such topics as subsonic and supersonic flight, shock waves, high-speed aerofoils, and temperature changes. Starting from first principles, the book gives complete and elementary derivations of all results, and takes the reader to research-level in the subject. The book contains many exercises and an extensive bibliography, providing access to the entire literature of the subject from 1860 to the present day, and including over two hundred items published since 1990. It contains the most extensive set of formulae on thermodynamics and oblique shock waves ever assembled.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technical topics covered during the Workshop included Hydrobionics, Boundary Layer Flows, Supercavitating Flows, Air-Water Penetration, and Control of Cavitation. Hydrobionics is the science of studying the structure, form, and movement of swimming animals in order to determine possible ways to achieve better efficiency, such as drag reduction and an increase of propulsion efficiency with minimum possible energy expenditures, for bodies such as submarines and missiles. A general summary of noise generation by high speed bodies in water was given. It was clear that this field is not well understood at the present time, and that a great deal more research effort is required in this area. In addition, presentations were given on a Simple Model for the Aero-Hydrodynamics of Ekranoplans, and on the Movement of a Wing Above a Wavy Water Surface. Of the 35 presented papers, 18 came from the Ukraine, 5 from Russia and 12 from the NATO nations.

Book excerpt: The explosion on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the consequent reactor fire resulted in an unprecedented release of radioactive material from a nuclear reactor and adverse consequences for the public and the environment. Although the accident occurred nearly two decades ago, controversy still surrounds the real impact of the disaster. Therefore the IAEA, in cooperation with other UN bodies, the World Bank, as well as the competent authorities of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, established the Chernobyl Forum in 2003. The mission of the Forum was to generate 'authoritative consensual statements' on the environmental consequences and health effects attributable to radiation exposure arising from the accident as well as to provide advice on environmental remediation and special health care programmes, and to suggest areas in which further research is required. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Chernobyl Forum concerning the environmental effects of the Chernobyl accident.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book excerpt: In 1958 construction began on Akademgorodok, a scientific utopian community modeled after Francis Bacon's vision of a "New Atlantis." The city, carved out of a Siberian forest 2,500 miles east of Moscow, was formed by Soviet scientists with Khrushchev's full support. They believed that their rational science, liberated from ideological and economic constraints, would help their country surpass the West in all fields. In a lively history of this city, a symbol of de-Stalinization, Paul Josephson offers the most complete analysis available of the reasons behind the successes and failures of Soviet science--from advances in nuclear physics to politically induced setbacks in research on recombinant DNA. Josephson presents case studies of high energy physics, genetics, computer science, environmentalism, and social sciences. He reveals that persistent ideological interference by the Communist Party, financial uncertainties, and pressures to do big science endemic in the USSR contributed to the failure of Akademgorodok to live up to its promise. Still, a kind of openness reigned that presaged the glasnost of Gorbachev's administration decades later. The openness was rooted in the geographical and psychological distance from Moscow and in the informal culture of exchange intended to foster the creative impulse. Akademgorodok is still an important research center, having exposed physics, biology, sociology, economics, and computer science to new investigations, distinct in pace and scope from those performed elsewhere in the Soviet scientific establishment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children represent a special challenge for emergency care providers, because they have unique medical needs in comparison to adults. For decades, policy makers and providers have recognized the special needs of children, but the system has been slow to develop an adequate response to their needs. This is in part due to inadequacies within the broader emergency care system. Emergency Care for Children examines the challenges associated with the provision of emergency services to children and families and evaluates progress since the publication of the Institute of Medicine report Emergency Medical Services for Children (1993), the first comprehensive look at pediatric emergency care in the United States. This new book offers an analysis of: • The role of pediatric emergency services as an integrated component of the overall health system. • System-wide pediatric emergency care planning, preparedness, coordination, and funding. • Pediatric training in professional education. • Research in pediatric emergency care. Emergency Care for Children is one of three books in the Future of Emergency Care series. This book will be of particular interest to emergency health care providers, professional organizations, and policy makers looking to address the pediatric deficiencies within their emergency care systems.
