Book excerpt: Data obtained during site characterization should be useful to assess the need for remediation, to evaluate and design effective remedial plans, and to allow long-term monitoring to discern remediation effectiveness. A valuable environmental tool that incorporates this data is a model that describes groundwater and vadose zone flow and transport characteristics. Data on geology and hydrology combined with information on contaminant sources are incorporated into these conceptual models that delineate the relative significance of the various fluid migration pathways. Downstream these same models also support risk assessment, remediation design, and long-term assessment of remediation effectiveness. Consequently, the building of coherent, accurate vadose zone and groundwater models is fundamental to a successful remediation. Among the important requirements for these models is accurate knowledge of flow domain boundaries and soil characteristics. At the Hanford Site, this knowledge is obtained primarily from borehole data, which provides information only at a point. In the high energy flood and fluvial deposits found at the Hanford Site, it can, at times, be difficult to correlate lithologic horizons between boreholes. Where there is no borehole control, our understanding of the geometry of hydrogeologic boundaries and thus of fluid migration paths is limited. Surface geophysical techniques are generally used to provide a measure of geologic control between boreholes. In particular, the seismic reflection method has the potential to provide the greatest resolution of the subsurface hydrogeology between and beyond boreholes.

Book excerpt: This report presents cost and performance data for the three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection survey technique used to generate a high-resolution, 3-D imaging of subsurface geologic, subsurface hydro-geologic, and subsurface dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminant source areas at four selected Department of Defense (DoD) sites. This project was sponsored by the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) and managed by the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center (NFESC) Port Huneme, CA. NFESC contracted with Battelle Memorial Institute (Contract No. N47408-95-D-0730) to perform the project work. The four sites selected were Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg, PA; Alameda Naval Air Station, Alameda, CA; Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, OK; and Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, Mineral County, WV. At Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, the seismic survey and an extensive sampling effort were funded and conducted outside of this project. Furthermore, at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, only geologic predictions, and not DNAPL targets, were investigated. The objective of the project was to verify that the 3-D seismic reflection survey is a viable technique for rapidly and effectively performing DNAPL source delineation and high-resolution site characterization. This objective would be met if 90% of the predictions for DNAPL contamination generated from the 3-D seismic survey results were verified to be correct, based on analysis of groundwater samples taken from within the surveyed regions. As a secondary objective, the surveys were also used to demonstrate high-resolution site characterization, by using the seismic output to interpret the depth to bedrock and the depth to fracture zones at several of the sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recognizes groundwater flow as a fundamental geologic agent, and presents a wide-ranging and illustrated overview of its history, principles, scientific consequences and practical utilization. The author, one of the founding fathers of modern hydrogeology, highlights key interrelationships between seemingly disparate processes and systems by tracing them to a common root cause - gravity-driven groundwater flow. Numerous examples demonstrate practical applications in a diverse range of subjects, including land-use planning, environment protection, wetland ecology, agriculture, forestry, geotechnical engineering, nuclear-waste disposal, mineral and petroleum exploration, and geothermal heat flow. The book contains numerous user-friendly features for a multidisciplinary readership, including full explanations of the relevant mathematics, emphasis on the physical meaning of the equations, and an extensive glossary. It is a key reference for researchers, consultants and advanced students of hydrogeology and reservoir engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking work is the first to cover the fundamentals of hydrogeophysics from both the hydrogeological and geophysical perspectives. Authored by leading experts and expert groups, the book starts out by explaining the fundamentals of hydrological characterization, with focus on hydrological data acquisition and measurement analysis as well as geostatistical approaches. The fundamentals of geophysical characterization are then at length, including the geophysical techniques that are often used for hydrogeological characterization. Unlike other books, the geophysical methods and petrophysical discussions presented here emphasize the theory, assumptions, approaches, and interpretations that are particularly important for hydrogeological applications. A series of hydrogeophysical case studies illustrate hydrogeophysical approaches for mapping hydrological units, estimation of hydrogeological parameters, and monitoring of hydrogeological processes. Finally, the book concludes with hydrogeophysical frontiers, i.e. on emerging technologies and stochastic hydrogeophysical inversion approaches.

Book excerpt: This book outlines the scientific, methodological and practical foundations for applying High Resolution Seismic HRS-Geo Technology in order to build detailed 2D and 3D seismic acoustic models in the form of acoustic impedances (AI) and reflection coefficients (RC) and the most important geological indicators. The monograph is a continuation of the book by the same authors "Oil and Gas Reservoir Prospecting and Exploration: High-Resolution Seismic HRS techniques and technology". Particular attention is paid to improving the process of searching for AI and RC models using the vector of objective functions, in which various types of residuals between real and model data are iteratively calculated. The well-known criteria for predicting the oil and gas potential of productive deposits from the standpoint of the system analysis principles and the set of geological indicators found from the HRS data are analyzed. The features of solving the main seismogeological problems using HRS-Geo Technology modules are shown, illustrated by numerous examples, and using a special (optimal) processing graph and a set of additional seismic record regularization procedures that provide maximum detail of high-resolution seismic data. The book is meant for scientists and specialists involved in in-depth complex geological interpretation of seismic data in the search and exploration of oil and gas deposits, as well as students of geophysical and geological specialties, graduate students of these specializations and developers.

Book excerpt: The high-resolution images and models provided by the seismic profiles confirm the simple soil and hydrological structure at the Palmyra site as well as the laterally complex structure at Carson Slough. The EM and seismic results indicate that an integrated geophysical approach is necessary for an area like Carson Slough, where continued leaching of salts combined with braided stream deposition has created a geophysically complex soil and groundwater system.
