Book excerpt: The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predictions of high Reynolds number oscillating flows have always been a great challenge. Using the experimental data from a study of flow over a wall mounted square cylinder (h = 4d) in Bourgeois et al, the commercial code Star CCM+, with very fine RANS (time averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes model) simulations are performed to try and accurately predict the oscillating wake region. The simulations are evaluated in different aspects to optimize the accuracy in the predictions of the flow field. For the turbulence model study three turbulence models are used for comparison, the Realizable k E with a two-layer blending wall treatment, the k E V2F (All y+ hybrid wall treatment), and the standard k (o model. In virtually all cases the Realizable k s proved to be the far superior model for capturing the flow field. Significant changes in the flow predictions are witnessed from each of the modifications performed on the turbulence model. With these observations a further understanding of the turbulence model is realized which gives greater confidence in the accuracy of the simulations. Further analysis resulted in observation using mesh dependence. Three near wall prism heights o f y + 12, y+ 5, and y+ 1 allowed the mesh to be resolved to the buffer layer, the buffer layer/viscous sublayer overlap region, and finally into the viscous sublayer. After all of these the comparisons once again realizable k E proved to be far superior. Finally a selected number of turbulence model constants were modified within the Realizable k E turbulence model to investigate the effect of these parameters on the accuracy of predictions.
