Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encompassing a wide range of techniques, spectroscopy is used to analyze chemicals, biological and pharmaceutical compounds, food and beverages, and high-tech materials. Covering the whole range of spectroscopic techniques, this book provides a thorough overview of underlying principles, techniques and applications. Dr. Hollas is a well-known author and authority in the field, and this book is an expanded version of his well-received lower-level book, Modern Spectroscopy, now in its third edition (0-471-96523-5). "The first edition of High Resolution Spectroscopy (the big book version of Modern Spectroscopy) was undoubtedly the best textbook on spectroscopy written at an undergraduate / beginning graduate level, and the second edition is an improvement... ...The coverage is broad, deep and even. The first chapters give a concise and clear introduction to spectroscopy, covering much that is accessible elsewhere only in more complicated discussions... ...The production values of High Resolution Spectroscopy are high, diagrams are well reproduced and the whole text is lavishly illustrated with many spectra and diagrams of apparatus.... ... it contains a great deal of material and is beautifully written; every library should contain a copy; every student of spectroscopy (no-matter what age!) should have a copy on their shelves." Extracts from a Review in Spectroscopy Europe, 11/3 (1999)

In older days chemists mixed starting materials in a flask and took the resul tants out of it after a while, leaving all the intermediate steps uncleared as a sort of black box. One had to be content with only changing temperature and pressure to accelerate or decelerate chemical reactions, and there was almost no hope of initiating new reactions. However, a number of new techniques and new methods have been introduced and have provided us with a clue to the examination of the black box of chemical reaction. Flash photolysis, which was invented in the 1950s, is such an example; this method has been combined with high-resolution electronic spectroscopy with photographic recording of the spectra to provide a large amount of precise and detailed data on transient molecules which occur as intermediates during the course of chemical reac tions. In 1960 a fundamentally new light source was devised, i. e. , the laser. When the present author and coworkers started high-resolution spectroscopic stud ies of transient molecules at a new research institute, the Institute for Molecu lar Science in Okazaki in 1975, the time was right to exploit this new light source and its microwave precursor in order to shed light on the black box.

Book excerpt: Molecules containing radioactive nuclei are discussed in detail in this work aiming at their usage as tracers for nucleosynthesis processes in the present star generation. So far, these processes can be observed in the γ-ray region via the decay of the radioactive atom. The spatial resolution of the astronomical observations is low in most cases. Here, it is proposed that precise stellar positions in the sky can be achieved using low energetic photons, emitted from molecular rotational or ro-vibrational motion. The aim of this thesis is to derive the rotational fingerprints of diatomic astrophysical relevant radioactive molecules from laboratory measurements of their stable counterparts. In case of diatomic molecules this goal can be achieved by a mass-independent Dunham approach. This method has been successfully applied to reveal the spectra of the radioactive, long-lived species 26AIF, 26AlH, 26AlO, 26AlS, 32SiO, 44TiO, and 60FeO.

The coverage of the book includes basic principles such as the quantization of energy, as well as the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules; general experimental methods and features of instrumentation; and microwave, millimeter wave, and lamb dip spectroscopy. Also covered in the book are subjects such as the principles behind rotational spectroscopy; diatomic and polyatomic molecules in vibrational spectroscopy; and the electronic spectroscopy of atoms, as well as diatomic and polyatomic molecules. The text is recommended for engineers and physicists who would like to know more about the concepts, theories, methods, and instrumentation related to spectroscopy, particularly in the field of high resolution spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: IN view of the growing interest in spectroscopy at radio and micro wave frequencies, and the increasing number of its applications to both physics and chemistry, it was thought that a general outline of the subject for non-specialists might be of some value. Research in this field is still expanding, but is now sufficiently developed for a critical review to be made both of its main applications and of the techniques that are used in this wavelength region. A broad approach has been taken, and the similarity and inter relation of the different branches have been stressed, as well as their general setting in spectroscopy as a whole. In this way it is hoped that the book will be of interest to many research workers and students who, although not directly concerned with the subject, would like to obtain a general picture of its methods and applica tions. At the same time considerable space has been given to the design of experimental apparatus and equipment, so that those wishing to set up such spectroscopes should be able to find much useful and detailed information.
