Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catechism of High Pressure, or Non-Condensing Steam Engines: Including the Modeling, Constructing, Running and Management of Steam Engines and Steam Boilers; With Illustrations HE writer of the following pages has made it his study to produce a work for the use of practical eu gineers, by furnishing them with a simple and clear ex planation of each subject treated. In its preparation a great effort has been made to secure accuracy, and to render every subject plain and easy of comprehension, by treating it in a clear style, taking up each subject in regular order and examining it by the light of daily experience. The range of subjects comprehends every thing directly connected with the steam-engine and steam-boiler. At the end of many of the articles, tables have been appended and examples introduced, to make explicit and distinct the principles set forth. A carpenter's saw, an engineer's chisel, or turning tool, soon get hot when a rubbing action, or friction, is set up between the tool and the work, although they are all quite cold to begin with. Sir Humphry Davy melted two blocks of ice by rubbing them one upon another, from which he concluded that 'the immediate cause of the phenomenon of heat is motion and this is now the generally accepted View of the nature of heat. Still we know that things may be hot without being visibly in motion hence, if heat is motion, the motion must exist in parts of the body too minute to be seen. All bodies are composed of minute particles called mole cules, held together by mutual attraction or cohesion, and these molecules are in a state of continual agitation or vibra tion. The hotter the body the more vigorous the vibrations of its constituent particles. In solid bodies the vibrations are limited in extent. If this limit is exceeded, owing to addition of heat, cohesion is sufficiently overcome to enable the particles to move about freely and without restriction, and the solid has now become a liquid. On still continuing the heat, further separation of the molecules takes place, cohesion is completely overcome, and they fly off in all directions. The liquid has now become a gas. The pressure exerted by the gas on the interior surface of the vessel in which it is confined is due to the collision of the molecules with the sides of the vessel. The greater the intensity of the heat the more violent the impact, and there fore the greater the pressure exerted. This is the condition of things in the interior of a steam boiler. If a part of the enclosing vessel were movable, it would evidently be pushed backward and outward. This is what happens to the piston of the steam engine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise Upon Steam Heating: Embracing Methods and Appliances for Warming Buildings, Heating Water and Cooking by Steam; Low Pressure, High Pressure and Exhaust Steam The practice of steam heating is gradually growing in favour, but hitherto the number of engineers who profess the work in this country, and are skilled at it, has been comparatively small. There can be no doubt that this has been due, in a large measure, to the want of an English book upon the subject, none having been written, so far as the writer of this, by the fullest inquiry, can ascertain. The want of a book and the readily acquired knowledge that a book gives, natur ally tend to retard progress; for if a man is wanting in skill in this work he may, even unconsciously, speak more highly of some other mode of heating with which he is familiar. There is considerable certainty that steam will never be preferred to hot water for general heating work - not in residences for instance - but for many purposes it excels hot water and every other means of affording warmth. On this account it is likely to grow in favour and make a practical treatise useful and sought for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Steam Boilers and Pressure Vessels The design of machinery is sometimes defined as the science of reasonable approximation. Comparatively few of the methods necessary in fixing the proportions of machine parts fall under the established formulae of Physics or Applied Mechanics. It is only by a skilful adaptation of theoretical deductions to practical requirements that the science of Machine Design may claim a right to legitimate and useful existence. With the hope of harmonizing still further the rational methods of both theory and practice, the authors of this volume have sought to incorporate in its pages the most direct procedure possible in the design of pressure apparatus. As a basis for the broader study of Machine Design it is believed that problems of this character possess peculiar advantages. The definiteness of the loads in pressure vessels and the reliability of the materials usually employed in their construction are incentives to intelligent and accurate calculation. Wherever possible, results have been obtained by rational rather than empirical methods. The usages of current boiler-making practice have been kept constantly in view. Numerous assumptions have necessarily been made but in every case it is believed a conservative reason has been given as their basis. The last five chapters serve to illustrate the application of the principles and formulae previously deduced to the practical design of various types of boilers and pressure vessels. It is hoped that the definite program followed in these problems may be of value not alone to students but to the boiler-making profession as well. The data and constants assumed are derived from actual practice and represent wide margins of safety in regard to boiler performance and construction. The design of water tube boilers is largely the result of ripe experience and well established precedent. Aside from a few features in connection with the steam drum, their proportions can rarely be determined by calculation. Hence it has not been considered wise to include in this work the specific design of a boiler of this class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Steam-Pressures in Locomotive Service, Vol. 26: A Review of a Report to the Carnegie Institution of Washington The Engineering Experiment Station was established by action of the Board of Trustees December 8, 1903. It is the purpose of the Station to carry on investigations along various lines of engineering and to study problems of importance to professional engineers and to the manufacturing, railway, mining, constructional, and industrial interests of the State. The control of the Engineering Experiment Station is vested in the heads of the several departments of the College of Engineering. These constitute the Station Staff, and with the Director, determine the character of the investigations to be undertaken. The work is carried on under the supervision of the Staff; sometimes by a research fellow as graduate work, sometimes by a member of the instructional force of the College of Engineering, but more frequently by an investigator belonging to the Station corps. The results of these investigations are published in the form of bulletins, which record mostly the experiments of the Stations own staff of investigators. There will also be issued from time to time in the form of circulars, compilations giving the results of the experiments of engineers, industrial works, technical institutions, and governmental testing departments. The volume and number at the top of the title page of the cover are merely arbitrary numbers and refer to the general publications of the University of Illinois; above the title is given the number of the Engineering Experiment Station bulletin or circular which should be used in referring to these publications. For copies of bulletins, circulars or other information, address the Engineering Experiment Station, Urbana, Illinois. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Value of the High-Pressure Steam Test of Portland Cements Unsoundness of a Portland cement, which is evidenced with age by a lack of cohesion and strength, may not be apparent for weeks or months after the cement is hydrated. This fact has created a demand for an accelerated test of soundness, in answer to which a large number of such tests have been proposed. A11 accelerated tests are designed to hasten the action of any expansive constituents of the cement, producing thereby evidence of unsoundness in a few hours or days.
