Hall thrusters are being developed at NASA Glenn for high-power, high-specific impulse operation. These thrusters operate at power levels up to 50 kW of power and discharge voltages in excess of 600 V. A parallel effort is being conducted to develop power electronics for these thrusters that push the technology beyond the 5kW state-of-the-art power level. A 10 kW power module was designed to produce an output of 500 V and 20 A from a nominal 100 V input. Resistive load tests revealed efficiencies in excess of 96 percent. Load current share and phase synchronization circuits were designed and tested that will allow connecting multiple modules in parallel to process higher power. Pinero, Luis R. and Bowers, Glen E. Book excerpt: Electric propulsion technologies promise to revolutionize access to space, opening the door for mission concepts unfeasible by traditional propulsion methods alone. The Hall effect thruster is a relatively high thrust, moderate specific impulse electric propulsion device that belongs to the class of electrostatic thrusters. Hall effect thrusters benefit from an extensive flight history, and offer significant performance and cost advantages when compared to other forms of electric propulsion. Ongoing research on these devices includes the investigation of mechanisms that tend to decrease overall thruster efficiency, as well as the development of new techniques to extend operational lifetimes. This thesis is primarily concerned with the design and construction of a Small Modular Laboratory Hall Effect Thruster (SMLHET), and its operation on argon propellant gas. Particular attention was addressed at low-cost, modular design principles, that would facilitate simple replacement and modification of key thruster parts such as the magnetic circuit and discharge channel. This capability is intended to facilitate future studies of device physics such as anomalous electron transport and magnetic shielding of the channel walls, that have an impact on thruster performance and life. Preliminary results demonstrate SMLHET running on argon in a manner characteristic of Hall effect thrusters, additionally a power balance method was utilized to estimate thruster performance. It is expected that future thruster studies utilizing heavier though more expensive gases like xenon or krypton, will observe increased efficiency and stability.

Electric Hall effect thrusters are an interesting technology for space applications. The big advantage compared to chemical propulsion devices is the higher specific impulse Isp, a higher ejection speed and thus a substantial gain in terms of propellant consumption. In a Hall effect thruster the ions are created and accelerated in a low pressure discharge plasma in a magnetic field. The first part of the work concerns scaling laws for Hall effect thrusters. A semi-empirical scaling model based on analytical laws and relying on simplifying assumptions is developed. This scaling model can be used to extrapolate existing thruster technologies in order to meet new mission requirements. In a second part, the influence of the channel width on the thruster performance level is investigated. It has been demonstrated that enlarging the channel width of a low power Hall effect thruster leads to an increase in thruster efficiency. Finally, electron properties are measured by means of electrostatic probes in the plume of different Hall effect thrusters. Experimental data on electron properties is of great interest for the validation of numerical plume models that are essential for the integration of the thruster on the satellite. Time-averaged and timeresolved measurements of the electron properties have been carried out for different operating conditions of the thruster. A fast-moving probe system has been developed in order to perform measurements of the electron properties close to the thruster exit plane.

Book excerpt: A Hall thruster performance model that predicts anode specific impulse, anode efficiency, and thrust is discussed. The model is derived as a function of a voltage loss parameter, an electron loss parameter, and the charge state of the plasma. Experimental data from SPT and TAL type thrusters up to discharge powers of 21.6 kW are used to determine the best fit for model parameters. General values for the model parameters are found, applicable to high power thrusters and irrespective of thruster type. Performance of a 50 kW thruster is calculated for an anode specific impulse of 2500 seconds or a discharge current of 100 A. Hofer, Richard R. and Jankovsky, Robert S. Book excerpt: Magnetically shielded Hall effect thrusters (MSHETs) are a variant of Hall effect thrusters (HET) that provide the favorable thrust-to-power ratio and high specific impulse of traditional stationary plasma type (STP) HETs but with an extremely long lifetime. MSHETs exhibit unique discharge plasma oscillations compared to traditional unshielded HETs. In this study, measurements of plasma oscillations in the state-of-the-art 12.5 kW Hall Effect Rocket with Magnetic Shielding (HERMeS) were obtained at various discharge voltages while holding other operation parameters constant. Data were collected using high-speed imaging, voltage, current, and plasma probes. The thruster exhibits two dominant oscillation modes within the discharge channel. The first mode is characterized as broadband turbulent oscillation in discharge current, and the second mode is a sinusoidal-like oscillation in discharge current. The oscillations in the discharge channel for both modes are predominantly global throughout the entire discharge and plume. The centrally mounted cathode exhibits a combination of global and localized "spoke" oscillation modes in the ExB direction. Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) analysis of the high-speed data show the frequency and spoke number dependent dynamic coupling behaviors between the discharge channel and cathode. Moreover, the shape of the cathode mode was quantified at each operating condition using a phase surface analysis technique of the high-speed imaging data. Data from high-speed plasma probes show that oscillations in the cathode permeate into the discharge channel and could be, in part, responsible for driving oscillations in the discharge channel. A novel technique for reconstructing temporally resolved ion energy distribution functions (IEDF(t)) was developed and tested on several plasma sources. This method, called the high-speed retarding potential analyzer (HSRPA), combines a retarding potential analyzer and a high-speed transimpedance amplifier with an empirical transfer function technique previously employed in the spatiotemporal reconstruction of high-speed Langmuir probe data. The analysis technique was successful in reconstructing the IEDF(t) of a modulated gridded ion source and of a 200-W laboratory Hall thruster. The HSRPA was less effective when used to collect IEDF(t) data in the high polar angle regions of the HERMeS thruster plume, but it was able to provide ion energy dependent spectral content. The HSRPA developed was a preliminary proof-of-concept that worked successfully and with subtle improvements would provide a powerful diagnostic tool for enlightening further studies of plasma oscillations in MSHETs.

Book excerpt: MIT's fully kinetic particle-in-cell Hall thruster simulation is adapted for use on parallel clusters of computers. Significant computational savings are thus realized with a predicted linear speed up efficiency for certain large-scale simulations. The MIT PIC code is further enhanced and updated with the accuracy of the potential solver, in particular, investigated in detail. With parallelization complete, the simulation is used for two novel investigations. The first examines the effect of the Hall parameter profile on simulation results. It is concluded that a constant Hall parameter throughout the entire simulation region does not fully capture the correct physics. In fact, it is found empirically that a Hall parameter structure which is instead peaked in the region of the acceleration chamber obtains much better agreement with experiment. These changes are incorporated into the evolving MIT PIC simulation. The second investigation involves the simulation of a high power, central-cathode thruster currently under development. This thruster presents a unique opportunity to study the efficiency of parallelization on a large scale, high power thruster. Through use of this thruster, we also gain the ability to explicitly simulate the cathode since the thruster was designed with an axial cathode configuration.
