Book excerpt: This book originates from a symposium held at the London Hospital Medical College under the auspices of Applied Chromatography Systems Ltd. to discuss the place of HPLC in the endocrinology field. Many of the authors of the present book were speakers at this symposium. It seemed to us that many endocrinolo gists did not at that time fully appreciate the value of HPLC, and this book was designed to publicise the potential value of this technique. A survey of methods used in the steroid field Cp 185) confirmed the view that HPLC is not being used as widely, particularly in research described in clinical journals, as might be expected. We hope that this book will illustrate, albeit in a few selected areas of endocrinology, just how versatile and powerful a technique HPLC is, and en courage those who have not yet experienced it to have a go. The beginner does not need to buy expensive instrumentation - all that is required is a pump, injector, column and detector - the rest can come later! All the authors have practical experience in the use of HPLC in the particular area they discuss. All readers who discover apparent errors or who feel that the treatment of a topic of interest can be improved upon are encouraged to contact the editors. All criti cism, especially if constructive, is welcomed. We are still learning, and other peoples' experience is always valuable.

The development of vapor phase chromatography for the separation and analysis of classes of substances ranging from metals and gases to a wide variety of organic materials has been one of the most exciting of these new techniques. Gas-liquid chromatography for the measurement of steroids is particularly significant for endocrinologists and reports during the past several years have demonstrated its usefulness. Because of the growing interest in this method, a committee of the Endocrinology Study Section composed of Drs. R. M. Dodson, Seymour Lieberman, Hilton A. Salhanick, and Ralph E. Peterson, felt that the time was propitious to hold this Workshop and it is on their behalf that I welcome you. We hope to obtain enough data during these sessions so that those attending this conference and those who may read the proceedings will be able to make an informed judgement about the usefulness of gas-liquid chromatography for the analysis of steroids in biological fluids. Thus, I hope that there will be adequate documentation of the reliability of the methods as well as a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of this analytical method with other classical methods. If we can do this, this Workshop will provide a significant base of practical considerations about gas chromatographic analytic techniques. I would like to thank Drs. T. F. Gallagher, H. Wilson, H. Salhanick and L. Engel for agreeing to serve as Chairmen of the sessions.

Book excerpt: Expert researchers who have developed and applied significant new assays describe in step-by-step detail a variety of methods for measuring a broad variety of hormones, related peptides, and synthetic steroids in various biological fluids. The hormones measured range from glucocorticoids in biological fluids, urinary steroids, aldosterone in blood, and plasma renin activity, to gut hormones in plasma, melatonin, prolactin, 6-sulfatoxymelatonin, and androgens in blood, saliva, and hair. The emphasis is on noncommercial assays so that investigators can set up novel methods suited to their special needs. Commercial assays are also described for comparative purposes. Tutorials on radioimmunoassay, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, and PCR techniques help the reader to choose the best method for his or her purpose.

Book excerpt: One of the only books to discuss all vertebrates, the fourth edition of Vertebrate Endocrinology has been completely reorganized and updated to explore the intricate mechanisms that control human physiology and behavior as well as that of other vertebrate animals. Perfect for students in endocrinology, zoology, biology and physiology, it allows readers to gain both an understanding of the intricate relationships among all of the body systems and their regulation by hormones and other bioregulators, but also a sense of their development through evolutionary time as well as the roles of hormones at different stages of an animal’s life cycle. Chapters have been reorganized to more closely follow traditional classroom presentation and extensive suggested readings are included at the end of each chapter allowing the reader to obtain further information as well as connect concepts to the literature on which the book is based. For the first time, this edition features four-color illustrations. Provides a complete overview of the endocrine system of vertebrates by first emphasizing the mammalian system as the basis of most terminology and understanding of endocrine mechanisms and then applies that to non-mammals Introduces the reader to suitable concepts and explanation of jargon so that the reader will be able to delve directly into the primary literature on any endocrine-related topic with a background that will aid in their interpretation of new information Revised and updated chapter on The Molecular Bases for Chemical Regulation that now includes more evolutionary data Includes information on endocrine disrupting chemicals and their implications on the health of wildlife and humans

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 14: Endocrinology, Neuroendocrinology, Neuropeptides, Part II focuses on the research on neuropeptides, endocrinology, and neuroendocrinology. Composed of various contributions of able researchers, the first part of the book is divided into eight chapters. These chapters cover studies on the physiology, biochemistry, and localization of suspected hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting hormones. Researchers show how hormones react in different controlled environments. The second part of the selection deals with the use of in vitro systems in studying neuroendocrine regulation and steroid hormone action. This part is composed of four chapters wherein the extensive discussion of the processes involved is supported by experiments conducted on animals. The third part of the book covers the use of neurotransmitters in the control of anterior pituitary function. Composed of nine chapters, this part offers a thorough investigation of how neurotransmitters function in different controlled conditions. The fourth part of the selection, which is comprised of eight chapters, focuses on the function of neuropeptides as neurotransmitters. Studies are presented to elaborate the processes how neuropeptides can be converted to act as neurotransmitters. The last part, which covers nine chapters, deals exclusively with research on the effects of endogenous opioid peptides on the neuroendocrine system. The book is a great find for those interested in biochemistry.

Book excerpt: Analysis of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Food provides a unique and comprehensive professional reference source covering most of the recent analytical methodology of endocrine disrupting compounds in food. Editor Nollet and his broad team of international contributors address the most recent advances in analysis of endocrine disrupting chemicals in food. While covering conventional (typically lab-based) methods of analysis, the book focuses on leading-edge technologies that recently have been introduced. The book looks at areas such as food quality assurance and safety. Issues such as persistent organic pollutants, monitoring pesticide and herbicide residues in food, determining heavy and other metals in food and discussing the impacts of dioxins, PCBs, PCDFs and many other suspected chemicals are covered. The book discusses the relationship between chemical compounds and hormone activity. What are the health impacts of different chemical compounds for men and animals? How are these compounds entering in foodstuffs? Analysis of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Food offers the food professional what its title promises – a compendium of sample preparation and analysis techniques of possible endocrine disrupting compounds in food. Special Features: Uniquely concentrates on analysis and detection methods of EDCs in foodstuffs Extensive coverage of the main types of globally available analytical techniques and methodologies Fully detailed properties, sample procedures, and analysis steps for each EDC Renowned editor Leo Nollet leads a broad team of international experts
