Book excerpt: In Attitudes of Gratitude, M. J. Ryan teaches readers how to unlock the fullness of their hearts and lives through the expression of gratitude. “Gratitude helps us to return to our natural state of joyfulness,” she writes, “where we notice what’s right instead of what’s wrong. It makes us feel complete, that we have everything we need, at least in this moment.” In her introduction to this 10th anniversary edition, Ryan recounts current research that bolsters her original thinking —people who practice gratitude on a daily basis are, by and large, happier, healthier, and more effective in the world. She also shares with readers brand new, top 10 gratitude practices, which readers of the first edition and people she’s taught and counseled over the years have provided to her. The concept of this book is very simple and very profound: “Gratitude creates happiness.” It’s a fact of life (and science as it turns out). Plants create carbon dioxide and gratitude creates happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gratitude - how do we define it? Gratitude is when you feel a strong sense of appreciation for both the tangible and intangible aspects of your life and the world you live in. Coming from the Latin word gratia, for grace, gratitude is an elevated state of mind that is rightly called a state of grace. This book describes how you can dwell in this state of grace, and enjoy the many benefits that stem from it. When you live with an attitude of gratitude, you bring your inner world into harmony with your outer world, recognizing that so much of what nourishes and sustains you in life comes from a source beyond yourself. Gratitude makes you whole in the sense of making you feel part of something much bigger than yourself. The way that you view the world in which you find yourself is always under your control, regardless of how much it might seem others are in control. An optimist sees it one way, a pessimist a quite different way; same situation, two different perceptions. An attitude of gratitude is an essentially optimistic one in which you are in the daily habit of noticing that there is always something good, something of benefit to be found in any situation. It may not be what you want, but you understand that it is what you need in order to grow into a fuller expression of yourself. The world is providing for your needs, not pandering to your wants. This providential view of the world, and the appreciation that goes along with it, allows you to mentally connect with something larger than yourself. This could be with the community that you live in, Nature or a Higher Power. By connecting with this external power, you are transcending your egoic self. Going beyond the ego and connecting with a larger reality outside of yourself is the source of your happiness. Gratitude has long been recognised by religions and philosophy as a desirable practice, but for many, the connection between gratitude and a sense of well-being is not an obvious one. This book seeks to remedy that, showing you how being grateful can lead you to a deeper sense of satisfaction with your life; something which escapes many people in this age of entitlement, where a culture of complaint creates the opposite of gratitude. This is not to suggest that you should accept second or third-class service without a murmur. You can still point out where deficiencies exist and have them remedied without losing your positive attitude. The recognition of the power of gratitude by modern Psychology has been a long time coming. Historically, conventional psychology focuses on what is wrong with a person rather than what is right. Today, a growing body of research indicates that people with higher levels of gratitude also experience higher levels of subjective well-being and resilience. In other words, you can be happier and less depressed, even when your circumstances are quite modest because you have learned to notice and appreciate the good that is present in every situation. With the incidence of depression in the developed world at an all-time high, this is good news for anyone who struggles with the black dog of depression. The practice of gratitude also helps you in a general way to deal more resiliently with the set-backs that life serves up. It can give you a sense of control over how you feel about those events. You cannot always control events or what other people do, but you can control how you react them, choosing to think in positive, life-affirming ways that can lead you to feel strong and purposeful. Gratitude is an idea that has come full circle. The Roman philosopher Cicero believed that gratitude is not only the greatest of the virtues but the parent of all others. More recently the positive psychology movement in has come to embrace this idea in the 21st Century.

How we feel colors all our life experiences, good or bad. How is it one person will embrace something with rapturous delight while another experiences the same thing with absolute life sapping dread? How have I sat through intense turbulence on airplanes planning my funeral while others around me sleep soundly? Attitudes we bring to an experience in life will determine if itÕs one of catharsis or deadening fear. Attitude is everything in life. Life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I respond to it. When gratitude becomes the dominant emotion in our universe of feelings, we move from states of discontent, anger, frustrated perfectionism, even depression towards serenity, acceptance, peace, tranquility, well being. With gratitude, everything becomes a gift to be celebrated, a bonus. Daily doses of gratitude might even help you find your own hidden treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gratitude, like other positive emotions, has inspired many theological and philosophical writings, but it has inspired very little vigorous, empirical research. In an effort to remedy this oversight, this volume brings together prominent scientists from various disciplines to examine what has become known as the most-neglected emotion. The volume begins with the historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations of gratitude, then presents the current research perspectives from social, personality, and developmental psychology, as well as from primatology, anthropology, and biology. The volume also includes a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of research on gratitude. This work contributes a great deal to the growing positive psychology initiative and to the scientific investigation of positive human emotions. It will be an invaluable resource for researchers and students in social, personality, and developmental, clinical, and health psychology, as well as to sociologists and cultural anthropologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gratitude is man's shortest memory" is one wise saying that can't be gainsaid or overemphasized. What it means is that people have a short memory when it comes to expressing gratitude: that is, giving thanks and, or showing appreciation. They easily remember the ills done to them than recall the good they've enjoyed. It is in human character to easily forget good deeds. As a result of this pungent attitude of ingratitude, a great number of people rarely give thanks and scarcely show appreciation for the good things that come their way but will readily remember to bemoan any evil they've suffered. In other words, they rarely appreciate favors but will readily castigate faults, offenses, and wrongdoings. Indeed, it is disgustingly disturbing to see that so many people live life without a rethink or retrace of thought. They don't reflect on their past nor do they consider the future. Those who don't reflect on their past easily forget where they're coming from, hence their attitude of ingratitude. In the same vein of thought, those who don't consider the future don't think of where they are going to, hence their thanklessness. Of a truth, our world is sinking so deep into the abyss of ingratitude and thanklessness to the extent that people seem to have completely thrown away their sense of gratitude and appreciation. People now find it so easy to remember the ills done to them than recall the good they've enjoyed. All over the world, the depreciation of appreciation - the bad attitude of ingratitude - is alarmingly worrisome. Indeed, gratitude is now the most endangered species in the attitude profile of humanity. Ingratitude is such a sorry case that has destroyed the very fabric of our humanity, and our sanity as well. People no longer reason properly. Many of them seem to have forgotten their humble beginnings. As a result, their forgetfulness keeps fuelling their thanklessness! They rarely think. That's why they hardly thank. And that's because only the thoughtful can be thankful as you will get to learn in this book. On account of the alarming rate of ingratitude in today's society, so much is lost, and so many have missed the blessings of being grateful, especially the fortitude that gratitude provides. This book is out to correct this anomaly. It examines the subject of gratitude: thanksgiving and appreciation in an unusual detail and a very profound dimension. It will help you to think, and think well so you can thank, and thank well too. The first chapter, titled "The Attitude Of Gratitude" highlights gratitude as an attitude that can be cultivated and groomed into full-blown maturity and fruition. It also shows you how to cultivate this virtuous attitude in your day-to-day life. Chapter Two: "The Altitudes Of Gratitude" speaks of heights: high realms of life and lofty dimensions of living which gratitude affords. It refers to how high gratitude can catapult you to if you are genuinely grateful. Chapter Three, "The Fortitude Of Gratitude", explains the protection and preservation dimensions of thanksgiving and appreciation. It uses practical examples to present gratitude as not just a mere virtuous attitude but one with a protective covering and a preservative capacity. It goes further to reveal how ingratitude is not a personal sin as its consequences and punishments go beyond the ungrateful folks to also affect their friends, family members, and community. In all, you will learn a whole lot of new things about the subject of gratitude: thanksgiving and appreciation that will enrich your knowledge profile forever.
