Book excerpt: Moreover, the RF noise physics and SiGe profile optimization for low noise are explored using microscopic noise simulation. A higher Ge gradient in a noise critical region near the EB junction, together with an unconventional Ge retrograding in the base to keep total Ge content below stability, when optimized, can lead to significant noise improvement without sacrificing peak cutoff frequency and without any significant high injection cutoff frequency rolloff degradation.

This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The semiconductor industry is a fundamental building block of the new economy, there is no area of modern life untouched by the progress of nanoelectronics. The electronic chip is becoming an ever-increasing portion of system solutions, starting initially from less than 5% in the 1970 microcomputer era, to more than 60% of the final cost of a mobile telephone, 50% of the price of a personal computer (representing nearly 100% of the functionalities) and 30% of the price of a monitor in the early 2000's. Interest in utilizing the (sub-)mm-wave frequency spectrum for commercial and research applications has also been steadily increasing. Such applications, which constitute a diverse but sizeable future market, span a large variety of areas such as health, material science, mass transit, industrial automation, communications, and space exploration. Silicon-Germanium Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors for mm-Wave Systems Technology, Modeling and Circuit Applications provides an overview of results of the DOTSEVEN EU research project, and as such focusses on key material developments for mm-Wave Device Technology. It starts with the motivation at the beginning of the project and a summary of its major achievements. The subsequent chapters provide a detailed description of the obtained research results in the various areas of process development, device simulation, compact device modeling, experimental characterization, reliability, (sub-)mm-wave circuit design and systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classroom-tested book addressing key issues of electrical noise This book examines noise phenomena in linear and nonlinear high-frequency circuits from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. The authors explore important noise mechanisms using equivalent sources and analytical and numerical methods. Readers learn how to manage electrical noise to improve the sensitivity and resolution of communication, navigation, measurement, and other electronic systems. Noise in High-Frequency Circuits and Oscillators has its origins in a university course taught by the authors. As a result, it is thoroughly classroom-tested and carefully structured to facilitate learning. Readers are given a solid foundation in the basics that allows them to proceed to more advanced and sophisticated themes such as computer-aided noise simulation of high-frequency circuits. Following a discussion of mathematical and system-oriented fundamentals, the book covers: * Noise of linear one- and two-ports * Measurement of noise parameters * Noise of diodes and transistors * Parametric circuits * Noise in nonlinear circuits * Noise in oscillators * Quantization noise Each chapter contains a set of numerical and analytical problems that enable readers to apply their newfound knowledge to real-world problems. Solutions are provided in the appendices. With their many years of classroom experience, the authors have designed a book that is ideal for graduate students in engineering and physics. It also addresses key issues and points to solutions for engineers working in the burgeoning satellite and wireless communications industries.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise and linearity are the two key concerns in RF transceiver systems. However, the impact of circuit topology and device technology on systems? noise and linearity behaviors is poorly understood because of the complexity and diversity involved. There are two general questions that are addressed by the RF device and circuit designers: for a given device technology, how best to optimize the circuit topology; and for a given circuit topology, how best to optimize the device technology to improve the noise and linearity performance. In this dissertation, a systematic noise and linearity calculation method is proposed. This approach offers simple and analytical solutions to optimize the noise and linearity characteristics of integrated circuits. Supported by this approach, the physics of state-of-the-art SiGe HBT technology devices can be decoupled and studied. The corresponding impact on noise and linearity is investigated. New optimization methodologies for noise and linearity at both the device and circuit level are presented. In addition, this thesis demonstrates a technique that accurately extracts ac and noise parameters of devices/circuits in the millimeter-wave range. The extraction technique supports and verifies the device/circuit noise analysis from a measurement standpoint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfriendly to conventional electronic devices, circuits, and systems, extreme environments represent a serious challenge to designers and mission architects. The first truly comprehensive guide to this specialized field, Extreme Environment Electronics explains the essential aspects of designing and using devices, circuits, and electronic systems intended to operate in extreme environments, including across wide temperature ranges and in radiation-intense scenarios such as space. The Definitive Guide to Extreme Environment Electronics Featuring contributions by some of the world’s foremost experts in extreme environment electronics, the book provides in-depth information on a wide array of topics. It begins by describing the extreme conditions and then delves into a description of suitable semiconductor technologies and the modeling of devices within those technologies. It also discusses reliability issues and failure mechanisms that readers need to be aware of, as well as best practices for the design of these electronics. Continuing beyond just the "paper design" of building blocks, the book rounds out coverage of the design realization process with verification techniques and chapters on electronic packaging for extreme environments. The final set of chapters describes actual chip-level designs for applications in energy and space exploration. Requiring only a basic background in electronics, the book combines theoretical and practical aspects in each self-contained chapter. Appendices supply additional background material. With its broad coverage and depth, and the expertise of the contributing authors, this is an invaluable reference for engineers, scientists, and technical managers, as well as researchers and graduate students. A hands-on resource, it explores what is required to successfully operate electronics in the most demanding conditions.
