Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the findings and recommendations on the evaluation of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Pipe resulting from a 1996 Transportation Enhancement/Hazard Elimination Project in Martin, South Dakota. This was the first project where HDPE pipe was allowed to be installed under a state highway in South Dakota. Department researchers installed instrumentation and conducted deflection testing on a 760 mm (30 in) HDPE pipe installed under US Highway 18 in Martin, South Dakota. A horizontal inclinometer probe was used to determine vertical heave or settlement. Surface profiles were monitored with a Dipstick® Floor Profiler. Thirteen separate sets of measurements were taken between August 1996 and June 1997. Costs were determined for installation and delivery of both HDPE pipes and reinforced concrete pipes (RCP). Neighboring states were surveyed to determine their costs for storm sewer pipes as well as specifications for installing HDPE pipes. Recommendations were made to allow the installation of HDPE pipe based on information received from the state survey, literature reviews, and the results of the Martin, South Dakota Project.

The HDPE pipes were able to handle the corrosive and abrasive runoff and eliminated the need for heavy equipment during placement on the steep fill slopes. No problems were observed with the use of these pipes during four and one-half years of monitoring.

Book excerpt: This publication, which draws upon the outcome of an IAEA coordinated research project, presents methodologies for assessing pipe failure rates in advanced water cooled reactors (WCRs), including a comprehensive review of good practices for the assessment of piping reliability parameters for advanced WCRs. Good practices are those processes and analytical tasks that would be expected in piping reliability analysis in order for the results to be realistic representations of piping structural integrity. This publication builds on technical insights that have been obtained using different methodologies when applied in multiple analytical contexts and responding to the requirements of different national codes and standards. It provides Member States with a strong technical basis for establishing design and plant centric piping reliability parameters for input into probabilistic safety assessment studies, in-service inspection programme development, and operational support. Additionally, an objective evaluation and inter-comparison of methods used in participating Member States is outlined leading to a harmonization of the practices relevant to newly deployable advanced WCRs.

Book excerpt: The primary load bearing component of a dual wall corrugated high density polyethylene pipe is the annular corrugated wall. It is this area that necessitates engineering evaluation with regard to the maximum permissible strains and the associated stress crack resistance of this thermoplastic material. This paper presents the protocol for evaluating the stresses in these critical structural members with new testing methods for determining the long-term stress capacity or service life for these members. This test method provides an alternate long-term stress crack evaluation protocol that will allow the user to design piping systems for a desired service life with more accuracy than simply specifying hydrostatic design basis rated resins.

Book excerpt: The findings from the field tests in Phase I and this phase will provide data for improvement of Iowa DOT specifications for HDPE pipe and its backfill condition. Field studies of Phase I conducted on 36-in. (915-mm) diameter HDPE pipes from Manufacturer C with four backfills were used for an assessment of the influence of the soil envelope on pipes' performance in this thesis. Furthermore, full scale field tests were conducted in this phase on 36-in. (915-mm) pipe from Manufacturer A with four additional backfill materials. The testing program used in this phase is similar to Phase I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractography in Failure Analysis of Polymers, Second Edition, provides a practical guide to the science of fractography and its application in the failure analysis of plastic components. In addition to a brief background on the theory of fractography, the authors discuss the various fractographic tools and techniques used to identify key fracture characteristics. The Second Edition includes additional material related to polymer life prediction testing and analysis. Case studies have been expanded, including a wide range of polymer types, new technologies, applications, and failure modes, as well as best practice guidelines enabling engineers to apply these lessons to their own work. Detailed images and their appropriate context are presented for reference in failure investigations. This text is vital for engineers who must determine the root causes of failure when it occurs, helping them further study the ramifications of product liability claims, environmental concerns, and brand image. This is also a valuable resource for all plastics professionals, including manufacturers, product designers, and consultants, forensic investigators, as well as educators in materials science. Presents comprehensive coverage of applied fractography, enabling improved reliability and longevity of plastic parts and products Includes case studies that demonstrate material selection decisions and how to reduce failure rates Provides best practice on how to analyze the cause of material failures, along with guidelines on improving design and manufacturing decisions
