Book excerpt: This paper represents the first part of a systematic investigation of factors affecting the fatigue resistance of surface-hardened steel components. The adopted approach is to view a surface-hardened member as a composite material consisting of a high strength, low ductility case and a lower strength, higher ductility core. A series of smooth axial specimens, representing case and core carbon contents, were prepared to determine cyclic stress-strain and strain-life curves. The cyclic properties obtained from these tests were then used to analyze and interpret the cyclic behavior of carburized specimens. Both axial and bend specimens were carburized and subjected to constant amplitude, strain-controlled fatigue tests. A discontinuity in the resulting strain-life curves, representing a shift from surface to subsurface crack initiation, is predictable from comparison of the strain-life curves for simulated case and core material. Finally, a relation is developed to determine optimum casexore ratios taking into account cyclic material properties, residual stresses, strain gradient, and applied stress or strain level.

Book excerpt: Fatigue properties of non-treated and carburized Ni-base IN718, Fe-base A286 and duplex stainless steel 2205 were investigated in fully-reversed uniaxial fatigue tests. The carburization process changes the fatigue crack initiation site of IN718 from surface-nucleated for the non-treated samples to centrally-nucleated for carburized samples. However, the fatigue lifetimes are not increased, because of defects that exist in the central areas of all the specimens functioning as weak points that served as sites for fatigue crack nucleation. The fatigue resistance of carburized A286 samples is modestly improved. Additionally, the fatigue strength coefficient and exponent of A286 are changed by carburization, which also effectively suppresses the formation of multiple crack nucleation sites at the surface. Carburized 2205 samples exhibited significant improvement in fatigue limit and fatigue lifetime compared to non-treated samples at the same cyclic stress, in spite of the existence of oxide inclusions, which act as centers for fatigue crack nucleation.

This congress presents research results also particularly for new materials, including composites. Researchers, on the other hand, are confronted with the engineering demands. Futhermore, the overwhelming development which is presently taking place in the field of computer software and hardware dealing with fatigue problems is outlined along with the directions of future developments in all areas of fatigue. Close to 300 fully peer-reviewed papers are published in the proceedings, including nearly 30 overview and keynote papers covering the various session topics. The proceedings should therefore serve as a comprehensive review of the fatigue field at the present state-of-the-art, suitable for scientists, engineers and students.
