Book excerpt: As fighter aircraft designs become more specialized for one primary mission, significant changes in crew station requirements are anticipated. Trends outlined in this report include projected requirements for three types of advanced fighter aircraft: the air superiority, the fighter-bomber, and the manned interceptor. Changes in crew station requirements were most pronounced when considering the air superiority type fighter which must engage in combat maneuvers in the high G environment. A configuration where the pilot is positioned with seat back at 25 deg aft of the vertical and legs elevated to the level of his buttocks; and with the seat back reclined to 65 deg aft of the vertical for the high G condition was chosen as the most promising configuration to investigate for utilization in a High Acceleration Cockpit. To construct a final mockup of the seat configuration, tests were run to determine the Mean Hip Pivot Point of the seat back and the Medial Elbow Locus. The seat, which reclined by the use of actuators, was placed in a mockup somewhat representative of an F-15 aircraft. Tests were conducted to establish crew station requirements and are included in this report. The configuration investigated was considered very functional for use in a High Acceleration Cockpit. Major problem areas which require further investigation are controls and displays, crew escape, and the unknowns involved in the high G environments as related to the seat back recline system. This model depicted all of the detailed pilot functions, their interrelationships and the potential alternate or iterating loops. As a result of interfacing with Air Battle Simulation II model, air battle kinematics and dynamic sequencing enabled the definition of pilot task and task loading during combat engagements. The interaction between the models, advanced system design and integration and verification of the feasibility using simulator design aid provided a near term, advanced high acceleration crew station design.
