The loss of a very prominent figure in my life, my band teacher, who was like a second father to me, sent me into a downward spiral of depression. My salvation was my family, friends, and a creative outlet, poetry. I took the deepest and darkest thoughts that swirled around in my head and molded them into words on paper. This allowed me to eliminate the thoughts and unburden myself while creating something expressive and creative. Looking back now, I am ever so thankful for my poetry and the people around me who were encouraging of everything that would help me feel better. I hope that this collection of poems can serve as an outlet for others. Be it as a relaxing read, reflecting your own similar feelings, or inspiring you to create your own poems. I have since come to terms with my loss, but these poems will always be a part of my journey.

Book excerpt: This bilingual Ukrainian-English collection brings together the most interesting experimental works by Mykola (Nik) Bazhan, one of the major Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. As he moved from futurism to neoclassicism, symbolism to socialist realism, Bazhan consistently displayed a creative approach to theme, versification, and vocabulary. Many poems from his three remarkable early collections (1926, 1927, and 1929) remain unknown to readers, both in Ukraine and the West. Because Bazhan was later forced into the straitjacket of officially sanctioned socialist realism, his early poetry has been neglected. This collection makes these outstanding works available for the first time.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the evolution of literary and artistic representations of the soul, exploring its development through different time periods. The volume combines literary, aesthetic, ethical, and political considerations of the soul in texts and works of art from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, spanning cultures and schools of thought. Drawing on philosophical, religious and psychological theories of the soul, it emphasizes the far-reaching and enduring epistemological function of the concept in literature, art and politics. The authors argue that the concept of the soul has shaped the understanding of human life and persistently irrigated cultural productions. They show how the concept of soul was explored and redefined by writers and artists, remaining relevant even as it became removed from its ancient or Christian origins.

Book excerpt: If you picked up this book, most likely no one needs to sell you on the struggles and issues that come from abuse. You don't need to be told about how invisible, afraid to trust, unable to relate, angry, ashamed, and isolated the wounded can feel. Maybe what does need to be explained is that God is the only one capable of dealing with these issues. Maybe you need to see a light bright enough to cut through that evil. This Bible study seeks to deal with the specific issues that come from abuse as it tells stories of healing woven out of unspeakable pain. Whether the evil you encountered was physical, mental, emotional, or sexual abuse, you will see that everything God created for good, Satan has attempted to distort and destroy. Through these lessons, you will see some hard questions answered. You will be encouraged to discover how God has loved you and walked with you. You will see how God has healed women who have walked in your shoes. The prayer behind this book is that these truths will resonate deeply in you, empowering you to heal and move forward.

Book excerpt: Magic appears in moments we never thought we'd imagine. No amount of planning can recreate moments we experience so deeply - all thoughts are momentarily suspended. This is the great paradox - when we constantly plan to arrive at a fleeting moment, we never do. The conditioning of the human mind has hijacked the evolution of humankind. However, many are waking up from the epidemic of chronic thinking. We are realising the human soul is not simply an evolutionary experiment in survival. We see that we are here to share our gifts. Written in a way that speaks to the subconscious, Dr. Kaushik Ram's mix of observations and fictional stories brings poetry and magic into our modern reality. Learn what lies beyond the conventional approaches to mind and body and discover the dreams only you can imagine. It is then we realise... we have just begun.

Illuminating the inner philosophical and practical aspects of Aikido, forty-seven-year Aikido practitioner and 6th-degree blackbelt Susan Perry, Ph.D., uses personal stories of joy, achievement, and hardship to demonstrate real-life applications of the transformational principles of Aikido. She introduces what Aikido is and where it comes from, providing a brief biography of its founder, Morihei Ueshiba. She explains in detail how Aikido helped her resolve difficulties at work, as a student, and as a teacher/sensei. Through each story shared, the author offers a glimpse of the beginner’s mind in action, the key to changing even the violent energy of an attack into peaceful interaction. Presenting Aikido’s step-by-step protocol for developing the receptiveness of the beginner’s mind, a state essential to personal transformation, Perry explains how distraction and timing can be used to deescalate potentially violent or dangerous situations. She discusses the founder’s philosophy of conflict, showing how Aikido can help peacefully resolve difficulties that arise with pushy, intimidating, and unpredictable people, those who are stubborn or don’t listen, insincere people who want something from you, and chaotic situations. She explains how a deepening practice of the martial art leads to an aiki state of inner peace, fusion, and boundless joy. Revealing how Aikido can help you face your fears and develop your heart and soul, this book shows how this martial art helps you embrace change, cultivate a strong center, and ultimately live a joyful life of engagement with the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the life and character of Therese of Lisieux is a remarkable, penetrating, and fascinating search for the truth behind one of the most astounding religious figures of modern times. A young nun who entered a convent at fifteen and died at twenty-four, Therese roused an incredible storm of spontaneous veneration only a few months after her death, and has been called by one Pope as "the greatest saint of the modern times." Countless images of the sweetly smiling saint flooded the world. But who was she, really? The Hidden Face has sprung from this question. It presents the true Therese, as objectively as possible, and gives a convincing interpretation of her sainthood. It is a book not for Catholics alone, but for anyone fascinated by the force of spirituality, by the incalculable effects of what Pascal called the "greatness of the human soul." It opens the cloistered world of the Carmel, takes off the sugar coating, and reveals the stark drama behind convent walls, the tension between personalities, the daily details of conventual life. And it throws light on the tremendous purifying process that turned the pampered darling into a saint of heroic virtue. The work of a mind of rare intelligence and integrity, this book is unique among the lives of saints. First published in Germany in 1944, the original is now in its eighth edition. This first English translation is based on a new, revised version using the latest edition of the saint's writings.
