He was a big fellow with chestnut hair, a freckled face and honest eyes. He was quite carelessly dressed in country homespuns, but for all that he had a clean, well-groomed air; and something about him, perhaps the faintest suggestion of a bowing at the knees, told of one who was constantly in the saddle. Up for your exam., eh i went on the Colonel. But what are you down here for? Come to meet someone You oughtn't to fritter away your time like that, Godfrey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Hidden Treasure: A Novel For Maurice Bertram it had no terrors, no associations, no memories that were not entirely delightful. Full of romance and poetry, it was to him an embodied fairy tale. Sweet and subtle fragrance pervaded it in his memory, faint odours of lavender and dried roses. There is no fragrance to match that of old roses; the fragrance of their bloom is coarse by comparison with that subtle, spiritual, pathetic scent. All the happiness his orphan childhood had known was associated with that house; he had dreamed of it by day and by night, longed for it, pictured it, until, when he stood a grown man before its heavy doorway and regarded its steep, low-brewed roof and leaning gable-end, he scarcely knew it again yet it was unchanged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Through this hustle and bustle, we find ourselves struggling to stay connected to God through His Word on a daily basis. That’s where Hidden Treasures can come in handy. In Proverbs 3:4-5, the writer exhorts us to seek God’s wisdom as if they were hidden treasures so that we understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. With that goal in mind, each day’s devotional draws your attention to a short passage or a few verses in the Bible. While some of the stories, events, and characters from these passages may be well-known, the information presented is meant to help you gain fresh insights from the already-familiar sections of Scripture. We all know that Lazarus was raised from the dead but now find out how Martha missed out on her miracle. And, read on if you’ve been curious why Jesus cursed the fig tree even though it was not the season for figs! Hidden Treasures will inspire you to love the Lord deeper, make your faith stronger, seek His counsel and comfort while you navigate life’s trials, and challenge you to become more Christ-like with each passing day.

Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mysterious House It had been early morning When the Woman first came there, and now the day was far advanced, but still she waited on. Once she had run down a side street, and had crept into a baker's shop, and had hastily bought a bun to keep await the pangs of hunger; but in a minute's time she had been back at her post, and she had never allowed herself to lose sight of the gate again. The cathedral bells had chimed every quarter of an hour, and the bell of the great clock had struck the hours one after another; and her steps had grown slower and slower as the time went on; but, weary though she was she never thought of going away, or of ceasing to keep her watch on the great iron gate. She was a tall thin woman, with a sorrowful face and with a restless anxious eye, and on her brow were many wrinkles and marks of care, although she could not have been more than forty years of age.
