Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Champlain is one of America's most historic waterways, but much of its history has remained hidden. With the arrival of Europeans, the lake became a vital route between the English in New England and the French in Quebec. Its isolated beauty contrasted sharply with the bloody military campaigns that unfolded there. While enormous forts were erected, colonial villages blossomed, and 18 th century naturalist Peter Kalm spread the word of its bucolic charm. William Miller attracted large audiences as he preached that the world would end in the 1840s. Valcour Island developed its own commune, and when Prohibition took effect, the towns near the Canadian border became a hotbed of bootlegging. From presidential visits to shipwrecks, local authors Jason Barney and Christine Eldred chronicle some of the lake's lesser-known contributions to American history.

Discover why one governor opposed women's suffrage and how that may have involved spirits of another sort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Lake Champlain: The Record of Three Centuries; 1609 1909 In offering this History of Lake Champlain to the public the writer does not claim that every detail of important events has been recorded or that every incident worthy of remembrance has been included. Such treatment would require longer time and greater space than are available for the production of this book. An attempt has been made to describe briefly and accurately the principal features of the story of this lake and valley as written during the past three centuries by the three nations of France, Great Britain, and the United States of America. Grateful acknowledgments are due Frank L. Greene, Hon. Horace W. Bailey, Hon. Carroll S. Page, Hon. John B. Riley, Hon. Charles Deal, Miss Edith Clarke, Capt. E. B. Rockwell, D. A. Loomis, officials of the navy department, and many others for valuable aid rendered in a variety of ways. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Lake Champlain: From Its First Exploration by the French in 1609 Lake Champlain extends from the 43 30" to the 45 north latitude, and lies between Vermont and New York - the boundary line of those States running through its centre. The lake is about ninety miles in length, in a right line from North to South, with a length of coast, on each side, of about one hundred and twenty-five miles: its southern extremity, or head, being at Whitehall, and its northern near the boundary line between the United States and Canada. The lake varies in width from one-fourth of a mile to thirteen miles, and its waters cover an area of about five hundred square miles. It receives the waters of Lake George, at Ticonderoga, and discharges itself into the St. Lawrence, through the river Richelieu. There is no perceivable current in the body of the lake, and, its waters, at ordinary stages, pass into the Richelieu with a velocity of only one-third of a mile per hour. The Lake has two arms; one on the west side, near its southern extremity, called South Bay, the other, on the east side, near its northern extremity, called Missisco Bay. This last mentioned bay stretches into Canada and covers about thirty-five square miles. The area of country, drained into the lake, is variously estimated from seven thousand to nine thousand square miles. It probably approaches nearest to the larger estimate.
