Book excerpt: Every few months there's a shocking news story about the sustained, and often fatal, abuse of a disabled person. It's easy to write off such cases as bullying that got out of hand, terrible criminal anomalies or regrettable failures of the care system, but in fact they point to a more uncomfortable and fundamental truth about how our society treats its most unequal citizens. In Scapegoat, Katharine Quarmby looks behind the headlines to question and understand our discomfort with disabled people. Combining fascinating examples from history with tenacious investigation and powerful first person interviews, Scapegoat will change the way we think about disability - and about the changes we must make as a society to ensure that disabled people are seen as equal citizens, worthy of respect, not targets for taunting, torture and attack.

Book excerpt: My book gives a voice to those of us who are living with hidden disabilities, and the discrimination we face whether with, or without the use of a service dog. It seems to have been an unspoken subject. Have you ever gotten out of your car because you parked in a handicap space and you don't look disabled? Maybe even chased down while someone is yelling at you because they assume you are abusing the handicap space? Have you ever gone to ER to find an ER nurse is hunting you down because you don't look disabled enough to have a service dog by your side? Some places ask for papers regarding the service dog, and my city doesn't issue papers. Have you ever gone out to a restaurant only to be harassed by the people sitting near because you don't look disabled enough to have a service dog. Maybe denied service because they don't think you are disabled enough to have a service dog. Have patrons ever chased you down in a store because they would like know why you have the dog? Only to be told, "You are not disabled." This book may open your eyes and heart for those living with hidden disabilities. My hope is to educate those people around us; so that people living with hidden disabilities don't have to endure discrimination and can live in peace among-st a sometimes tough world.

Book excerpt: Prepare your institution for a new generation of disability services that embraces the growing student, as well as staff and faculty population with disabilities. Legal compliance, reasonable accommodations, classroom instruction issues, strategies to improve the campus climate and more--this volume examines what disability services may have to offer, and have cmapuses and disability service professionals may need to collaborate or expand traditional notions of disability and disability services. Volume editors Wendy S. Harbour, Lawrence B. Taishoff Professor of Inclusive Education at Syracuse University, and Joseph W. Madaus, co-director of the Center on Postsecondary Education and Disability, assemble an introduction, and overview of disability services. Contributing authors examine campus case-studies, procedures and terminology, legal compliance and disability services for staff and faculty. The volume concludes with a broad view of disability itself and how its role as a part of campus diversity. This is the 154th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Higher Education. Addressed to presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other higher-education decision-makers on all kinds of campuses, New Directions for Higher Education provides timely information and authoritative advice about major issues and administrative problems confronting every institution.

Book excerpt: The evil prosthesis of Captain Hook, the comical speech of Porky Pig, and the bumbling antics of Mr. Magoo are all examples of images in our culture which can become the basis of negative attitudes and subliminal prejudice towards persons with disabilities. These attitudes influence and underlie discriminatory acts, resulting in negative treatment and segregation. A teacher's ability to recognize and counter such images may well determine the success of inclusion and mainstreaming programs in our schools and society. Well-researched and well-written, this book offers practical guidance as grounded in solid research to schools that are wrestling with how to mainstream children with disabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a nonpathological approach to disability, viewing it as part of diversity rather than as deficit. The opening chapters introduce basic knowledge of teaching in disability communities, covering attitudes and behaviors that may be difficult for instructors to relate to. Next, the book delves into the three activities sections that increase in difficulty over the course of the book. The activities highlight barriers and psychosocial impediments that hamper progress in disability communities. Designed by an expert educator and clinician who is also an insider in the disability community, each of the 34 activities translate well in classroom environments or as homework, and each can be done individually or in group settings. All activities include a list of required materials, time expectation, goal setting criteria, possible outcomes, and talking and debriefing points for reflection, thereby facilitating effective planning and execution. The activities also recommend possible modifications to adjust the difficulty of the activities. This flexibility makes this a valuable resource for a wider audience of expertise and settings, ranging from introductory to sophisticated readers and users, students and non-students, in classrooms, in workshops, or in other surroundings. Lastly, the book concludes with a chapter on accessing outcomes, with six measures for evaluating knowledge and skill. Teaching Disability is a well-rounded, highly applicable tool for instructors and students in the disability community.
