Book excerpt: Innermost is a collection of both free verse and fixed verse poetry written over a period of half a decade about every emotion felt inside the human heart. These poems will transport you to a whole other world within the innermost depths of the human soul. "Author Jamila Mikhail's book "Innermost" is an emotional and mental poetry documentary that captures some of theauthor's darkest hours and coldest moments of her life as she strives to fight against the devastation of depression, rejection, disappointment and a broken heart. The idea of true love is noticeable throughout the book with romantic poems that embody sentiment, compassion, empathy, desire and fantasy- others show us merely the fragments leftover after all has been shattered to pieces... just like broken glass. Emotional-based, the author's style of writing is like prose poetry and uses theliterary elements of symbolism, metaphors, and situational irony tocompare and depict real-life circumstances to figurative scenarios; an example of this is the depiction and comparison of her own internal battle to the idea of being lost at sea. Author Jamila Mikhail's poetry can speak to so many broken spirits andnsuffering hearts and I can definitely recommend this book to others.More than a presentation of conflict, adversity and pain, this book reads as a poetic testimony of perseverance, heart, love, courage and transition in which the author digs deep down into her soul and embraces her hearts innermost." —Realistic Poetry International, 5 star editorial review

Book excerpt: In the 2016 spring semester, the Patrick, Tannenhaus, Hernandez Sophomore team embarked upon a journey. A journey to discover what drives people to move. Focusing on U.S./Latin-American immigration during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, students were exposed to an array of perspectives and policies. Combining Spanish and Humanities, language and culture; preconceptions were challenged and minds opened. Forming groups, students selected a Latin-American country and attempted to get inside the minds of those affected by immigration. Often victims of more powerful forces, the immigrant's story is rarely told. Through works of historical fiction, students revealed why immigrants leave their homeland, what they experience on their journey, and how their life is altered once in the U.S."

Book excerpt: Lavengro, the Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest, published in 1851, is a heavily fictionalized account of George Borrow’s early years. Borrow, born in 1803, was a writer and self-taught polyglot, fluent in many European languages, and a lover of literature. The Romany Rye, published six years later in 1857, is sometimes described as the “sequel” to Lavengro, but in fact it begins with a straight continuation of the action of the first book, which breaks off rather suddenly. The two books therefore are best considered as a whole and read together, and this Standard Ebooks edition combines the two into one volume. In the novel Borrow tells of his upbringing as the son of an army recruiting officer, moving with the regiment to different locations in Britain, including Scotland and Ireland. It is in Ireland that he first encounters a strange new language which he is keen to learn, leading to a life-long passion for acquiring new tongues. A couple of years later in England, he comes across a camp of gypsies and meets the gypsy Jasper Petulengro, who becomes a life-long friend. Borrow is delighted to discover that the Romany have their own language, which of course he immediately sets out to learn. Borrow’s subsequent life, up to his mid-twenties, is that of a wanderer, traveling from place to place in Britain, encountering many interesting individuals and having a variety of entertaining adventures. He constantly comes in contact with the gypsies and with Petulengro, and becomes familiar with their language and culture. The book also includes a considerable amount of criticism of the Catholic Church and its priests. Several chapters are devoted to Borrow’s discussions with “the man in black,” depicted as a cynical Catholic priest who has no real belief in the religious teachings of the Church but who is devoted to seeing it reinstated in England in order for its revenues to increase. Lavengro was not an immediate critical success on its release, but after Borrow died in 1881, it began to grow in popularity and critical acclaim. It is now considered a classic of English Literature. This Standard Ebooks edition of Lavengro and The Romany Rye is based on the editions published by John Murray and edited by W. I. Knapp, with many clarifying notes. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Elaine Brody a psych nurse working with her brother in an organization called Scarlet Chaos. The small group is labeled domestic terrorists by the United States for protesting forced vaccinations that cause sterility. The group becomes more subversive until Elaine survives a biological agent used as an act of war from China. The bio attack directed at health care workers allowed the US government to pass a new law. The law identifies citizens according to levels, wiping out the Constitution of the United States and creating a caste system. Each citizen is given the opportunity to test their abilities, proving worthiness. The testing includes a physical, blood work, DNA sampling, fitness and intellectual capabilities test. The combined scores allow one’s level to be assigned and privileges to be awarded. Rumors abound that the decimated medical personnel are disappearing in training centers. Given the word martial law is imminent, Elaine and her family attempt to escape the country. Her family can safely cross the border, but Elaine is recognized as a nurse. She is taken to a military base to be assessed, examined, and assigned for retraining. All health care personnel are rounded up to take national inventory of how many have survived the attack. She is cataloged and branded with a radioactive tattoo showing her credentials. Elaine is sent to a re-education inside a scientific research facility. The facility is conducting psychological and genetic experiments. She and the other inhabitants of the camp have been selected as lab rats for the experiments. Her background in psych allows her to remain unchanged during her testing, but she is not unaffected. The brutal treatment of a new slave class at the camp reignites her passion for resistance. She helps a group of genetically modified super soldiers learn the power of defiance rising to fight for their freedom. Her spicy, polyamorous relationship with two of the enhanced humans keeps her sanity and focus. Vik’s and Sean’s love for each other is echoed in the love they share for Elaine. The three of them plan an escape together, building an army large enough to conquer and heal the fractured country. Elaine’s personal belief system in chaos magic prepares her for the obstacles they will face together. They stand on the brink of Armageddon, a war predicted by all religions in hundreds of religious texts. It cannot be prevented, but it can be won. All three make a freewill choice: LIVE AND DIE TOGETHER.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Borrow: The Man and His Books is a biography written by Edward Thomas. Borrow was an English novelist and travel diary writer, focused on his own experiences in Europe. Excerpt: "Borrow could not avoid making himself impressive and mysterious. He was impressive and mysterious without an effort; the individual or the public was impressed, and he was naturally tempted to be more impressive. Thus, in December of the year 1832 he had to go to London for his first meeting with the Bible Society, who had been recommended to give him work where he could use his knowledge of languages. As he was at Norwich, the distance was a hundred and twelve miles, and as he was poor he walked. He spent fivepence-halfpenny on a pint of ale, half-pint of milk, a roll of bread and two apples during the journey, which took him twenty-seven hours. He reached the Society's office early in the morning and waited for the secretary. When the secretary arrived he hoped that Borrow had slept well on his journey. Borrow said that, as far as he knew, he had not slept, because he had walked. The secretary's surprise can be imagined from this alone, or if not, from what followed."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romany Rye a sequel to "Lavengro" is a novel by George Borrow. Borrow was an English writer of novels and of travel books. Excerpt: "In the evening I received another visit from the man in black. I had been taking a stroll in the neighbourhood, and was sitting in the dingle in rather a listless manner, scarcely knowing how to employ myself; his coming, therefore, was by no means disagreeable to me. I produced the hollands and glass from my tent, where Isopel Berners had requested me to deposit them, and also some lump sugar, then taking the gotch I fetched water from the spring, and, sitting down, begged the man in black to help himself; he was not slow in complying with my desire, and prepared for himself a glass of Hollands and water with a lump of sugar in it. After he had taken two or three sips with evident satisfaction, I, remembering his chuckling exclamation of "Go to Rome for money," when he last left the dingle, took the liberty, after a little conversation, of reminding him of it, whereupon, with a he! he! he! he replied, "Your idea was not quite so original as I supposed. After leaving you the other night I remembered having read of an emperor of Germany who conceived the idea of applying to Rome for money, and actually put it into practice."
