Book excerpt: There are few studies that deal with an overall treatment of the Hittite administrative system, and various other works on its offices and officials have tended to be limited in scope, focusing only on certain groups or certain time periods. This book provides a comprehensive investigation of the administrative organization of the Hittite state throughout its history (ca. 1650–1180 BCE) with particular emphasis on the state offices and their officials. Bringing together previous works and updating with data recovered in recent years, the study presents a detailed survey of the high offices of the state, a prosopographical study of about 140 high officials, and a theoretical analysis of the Hittite administration in respect to factors such as hierarchy, kinship, and diachronical changes.

Book excerpt: The so-called cult inventories are of fundamental interest for our understanding of the Hittite local cults. They contain lists of temple inventory, offerings and personnel, but they succinctly describe religious festivals as well and sometimes even offer descriptions of idols. This study contains a text edition of many significant cult inventories, mainly connected with the Hittite 13th-century cult reorganization. It also uses these and other texts to draw a picture of the background and the administrative and geographic aspects of this operation.

Since the epoch-making work of Julius Wellhausen at the end of the 19th century the differences between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars have often been explained in terms of a gradual evolution, which shows an increasing historicisation, denaturalisation and ritualisation. The festivals were in Wellhausen's view gradually detached from agricultural conditions and celebrated more and more at fixed points in the year. This study tries to show that the changes in the priestly festival calendar reflect a conscious effort to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the semi-annual layout of the Babylonian festival year. The ramifications of the change only come to the fore after a careful study of the agricultural conditions of ancient Israel - and Mesopotamia - makes clear that passover and the festival of unleavened bread were originally celebrated in the second month of the year. The first month of the year envisaged by the priestly festival calendar for the celebration of passover and the festival of unleavened bread in turn mirrors the date of one of the two semi-annual Babylonian New Year festivals. The two Babylonian New Year festivals were celebrated exactly six months apart at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. In order to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the Babylonian scheme with two New Year festivals a year, the date of passover and the festival of unleavened bread had to be moved up by one month. The consequences for the origin of passover, the festival of unleavened bread, the festival of weeks and the festival of huts are charted and the relations between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars are determined anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called "Historical Prologue" section in the Ancient Near Eastern treaties is characteristic of "vassal treaties" and documents pertinent to political subordination. It is known so far mainly from Hittite documents, where it serves to present a set of legal arguments, justifying the imposition of obligations on the subordinate party, and depriving that party of the ability to contest the validity or legality of the subordination. As such, it constitutes a potentially rich source of legal conceptions and rules pertaining to the interstate law of the period, and particularly to the law of the treaty of the Ancient Near East - a source whose potential was hitherto unfortunately ignored due to a misinterpretation of this section's role in these documents. Taking as its starting point the premise that the function of this section was juridical and that it was addressed to the divine judges, this study attempts to unfold the legal considerations that underlie the wording of some 20 examples of the "historical prologue".--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: Beyond Babel provides a general introduction to and overview of the languages that are significant for the study of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel. Included are essays on biblical and inscriptional Hebrew, Akkadian, Northwest Semitic dialects (Ammonite, Edomite, and Moabite), Arabic, Aramaic, Egyptian, Hittite, Phoenician, postbiblical Hebrew, and Ugaritic. Each chapter in the volume shares a common format, including an overview of the language, a discussion of its significance for the Hebrew Bible, and a list of ancient sources and modern resources for further study of the language. A general introduction by John Huehnergard discusses the importance of the study of Near Eastern languages for biblical scholarship, helping to make the volume an ideal resource for persons beginning an in-depth study of the Hebrew Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
