Book excerpt: Heroin is a drug that myths are made of. Whether smuggled in the stomach of a camel or used as the ultimate symbol of lifestyle chic, no drug has been more argued over and legislated against, no drug has been more subject to misinformation and moral panic. Heroin Century sets the record straight. It contains a wealth of historical and medical information about this drug which made its first appearance as a miracle medicine over a hundred years ago and makes recommendations for its future in the twenty-first century. Evidence shows that heroin is dangerous principally because it is illegal. The authors argue that a more relaxed relationship between society and the drug would benefit both the economy and public health and safely. Individual chapters describe the history of heroin production; the makeup of heroin and evolving methods of use; the spread of heroin and international efforts at control; typical "career" patterns of users, ranging from occasional recreational use to destructive dependence; the subjective experience of taking heroin; the association between heroin and crime; the use of heroin in medicine and its effects on physical health; the history of the treatment of heroin dependence; and likely changes in heroin use in the future. The authors have drawn on literary and artistic sources as well as the large pool of scientific literature to compile a comprehensive and fascinating account of this world-changing drug. Heroin Century makes available a wealth of information about the history, chemistry, pharmacology and medical aspects of heroin in a form accessible to anyone who wishes to participate in the contemporary debate bout society's attitude to drugs.

Book excerpt: An up-to-the-minute, comprehensive examination of heroin's history, pharmacology, psychology, and sociology, Heroin offers a spellbinding account of the drug's power and persistent allure, its medicinal benefits, and its destructive nature. This updated and expanded second edition provides new research into heroin's effects on the brain, the changing attitudes and policies about methadone and medications, and the different approaches to treating heroin addicts. Included are studies of violence along the U.S.-Mexican border--which has put heroin trafficking in the spotlight--as well as a focus on how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made opium a valuable commodity and a major source of funds for terrorists. Animated with vivid personal stories and vignettes, Heroin puts a human face on the long and complex story behind this notorious drug.

Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

However, with the right kind of treatment and care - and knowing what to expect along the way - it is actually quite possible to recover from heroin addiction and overcome the dependency altogether. That a heroin addict will seldom admit to their addiction doesn't make things any easier. In any case, now is not the time to play blame games with the victim of the addiction. Instead, it's time to help them before they become just another statistic. It's important to understand that not many addicts can overcome this addiction on their own. It will take a lot of love, support, and care from you. But how do you get started? And what should you look out for, and expect along the way? This book will answer the many questions you have, and will teach you how you can help.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Health - Miscellaneous, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: Drug addiction refers to a dependence on a medication or illegal substance. Addicted people are unable to control the usage of drugs and continue using the substance despite the obvious harms associated with their behavior. Normally, drug addiction causes an intense craving for the substance making it hard for addicted people quit such behaviors. Drug addiction causes long-term consequences such physical and mental health, strained relationships, law and employments problems. The affected persons are encouraged to inform their doctors, support groups, friends and families in order to overcome their addiction and stay safe. Some of the commonly abused drugs include; heroin, cocaine, bhang and alcohol. The treatment option for drug addiction within medical establishments depends on various factors such the type of the drug and how its affects the user. Treatment in many medical establishments combines psychotherapy services, inpatient and outpatient programs, self-help groups and sponsors. The treatment options aim at reducing dependency and restore normal lives of addicts. Specifically, heroin addiction is caused by both social and psychological factors. For instance, unpleasant feelings, stress and pressure can contribute to heroin addiction. According to National Institute of Drug Abuse, factors such as cultural beliefs, drug availability and lack of education deficit can also contribute to heroin addiction. In the current world, heroin addiction is treated using various drugs namely; methadone, clonidine, buprenorphine and naltrexone. This paper explores the heroin treatment methods, problems faced, the most effective method and the way to improve the successful rate of rehabilitation.

Book excerpt: This book starts by elaborating on the history of the consumption of heroin in central Asia and how this problem came to be a current epidemic in this part of the world. Adolescents tend to hide their heroin addiction from families until it is out of their control. The impact of hiding a heroin addiction on treatment outcomes will be discussed in this book. Comorbid benzodiazepines misuse, heroin overdose and how to prevent them will be addressed in two chapters as well. The book will then proceed by describing the prevalence of the most common psychiatric comorbidities associated with heroin addiction. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and pain are common comorbidities with heroin use and will be emphasised in two separate chapters. In these two chapters, the reader will be updated about the most recent evidence based psychotherapeutic interventions that integrate the treatment of opioid use with PTSD and pain disorders. Sedentary life style can affect treatment negatively in this population. Utilisation of physical exercise in the treatment of heroin addiction will be explained in detail. Methadone maintenance is a common pharmacological intervention for opioid addiction. A whole chapter will cover this topic thoroughly. Finally, the book will cover the pharmacological interventions for heroin addiction in the legal system.

Book excerpt: This book is mainly concerned with the bifurcation theory of ODEs. Chapters 1 and 2 of the book introduce two systematic methods of simplifying equations: center manifold theory and normal form theory, by which one may reduce the dimension of equations and change forms of equations to be as simple as possible. Chapters 3-5 of the book study in considerable detail the bifurcation of those one or two dimensional equations with one, two or several parameters.
