Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Discovery in America The explorers of this continent were great men in their day, and they have made a great mark on the his tory of the land they made known. For more than four centuries their work has been kept up and it is not yet complete, for there are areas still in America on which the foot of the white man has not been set. From Columbus, who daringly crossed an unknown ocean to discover an unknown continent, to Peary, who in our own day has time and again plunged into the seas of ice in restless quest of the mysterious pole, the list is a long one and is filled with names of valiant and unconquerable men. Heroes of discovery are these in the highest sense, and it is fitting that the story of their deeds should be put upon record. This we have sought to do, in as full a sense as the space at our command permits, endeavoring to omit none of the great discoverers, none of the leaders in this great drama of the opening of a new world. It is hoped that readers will find these tales full of interest and inspira tion and gain from them an adequate sense of what was accomplished in the great work of exploring a continent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Progress: Stories of Sucessful Americans This book is planned to give as general a view of recent American achievement as possible without becoming of unwieldy size. Invention, discovery and exploration, art, music, philanthropy, kindness to animals, industrial success, aviation, pure and applied science, are all represented. To select the names of the men and women of achievement has not been easy. Some thirty have been carefully chosen with the aim of introducing those whose work reached its consummation within the last half-century; but in a few instances men have been included whose inventions have been greatly developed in recent years, even though by other hands. In making the selection a number of children's librarians have been consulted, with the wish to include as many as possible of the people about whom children come to them for information. There is seldom difficulty in finding biographies of authors, soldiers, or statesmen. For this reason such names have been omitted from this book. The qualities which led these men and women to success have been brought well to the front; and while financial rewards have often been mentioned, success is reckoned in value to the world, rather than in money acquired by the individual. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John and Sebastian Cabot: A Four Hundredth Anniversary Memorial of the Discovery of America In other words, theory must precede action. John Cabot, certainly, and Sebastian Cabot, possibly, were the first Europeans to discover the American continent and make record and cartographical representation of the same, preserving to all posterity the time, place and circumstance of their discovery. To the present time the American people have neglected to the place one stone upon another designed to memorialize those men, or to express gratitude for the geographical discovery, which either made our great nation a possibility, or an accomplished fact. While we claim for the Cabots the distinguished honor of the first view of the American continent, technically, and in fact, we do not presume to name them as the discoverers of America, in the largest and more just sense of the phrase. That distinguished honor the world has long since accorded to Christopher Columbus, and their righteous judgment should never again be disputed. The discovery and exploration of America cannot be understood by one distinct statement of fact. The results of various navigations and explorations, attended with much peril and anxious solicitude, covering a period of two hundred years, makes intelligible and plain to us, what to the early navigators and explorers was chaotic and at most dubious, and solely problematical. Nor is it necessary for the purposes of this paper that we review all that early history in detail. The nautical problem and the geographical discoveries proposed by Diaz, Da Gama, Columbus, Magellan, Verrazano, and the Cabots, was not to find an unknown continent, but solely to ascertain the most feasible route to the eastern shore of Asia.
