Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes and Incidents of the Mexican War As many of my friends who read this book, will think it strange that a native of Westmoreland county, Penn'a., should figure as a member of the Missouri Volunteers, I wish to Say, by way of ex planation, that I was born near Latrobe, in 1822. I learned the carpenter trade in Uniontown, Fayette county, and in 1844 I went to Lexington, Lafayette county, Missouri, where I followed my trade up to the time of my enlistment, on the sixth day of June, 1846, at which time I became a member of Company B., First Missouri Cavalry, Captain Wil liam Walton, in the regiment commanded by Colo nel Doniphan, and a part of The Army of the West, under General Kearney. After being mus tered out of service I returned to my home, near Latrobe, Westmoreland county, this state, where I have since resided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States Navy, and Biographical Sketches of American Naval Heroes: From the Formation of the Navy to the Close of the Mexican War The present work, therefore, differs from any yet published. It is intended to combine the advantages of all, so far as this is possible, within the compass of a single volume. It gives in a compact mass, what is elsewhere to be found only in detached portions. The plan, it is believed, is entirely ori ginal. And the conviction that it will be found acceptable, also, has induced the publishers to expend large sums, in order that the volume may be issued in a style worthy of the subject, and worthy likewise of general patronage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Military Heroes of the War of 1812: With a Narrative of the War The of 1812 furnishes little to gratify the annalist until he approaches its close. The imbecility of the Generals and the number of their defeats, naturally dispirit an author. He feels the subject continually checking him; and is delighted, when the campaign of 1814 opening, affords him something beside disgrace and disaster to record. The un promising nature of the subject has prevented any writer of ability from taking it up: and hence a good history of the War of 1812 is as yet unknown to thelanguage. Book excerpt: The classic account of the mexican revolution from the acclaimed author. First published in Spanish in 1971, "The Mexican Revolution" has been praised by Mexico's Nobel Prize-winning author Octavio Paz as a notable contribution to history and is widely recognized as a seminal account of the Mexican Revolution. Written during the author's time as a political prisoner in the famous penitentiary of Lecumberri in Mexico, it sold thousands of copies in its first edition, becoming widely accepted as the official textbook by history faculties in Mexico despite Gilly's continued incarceration. It has gone through more than thirty editions in Mexico and been translated into French and Greek. This is a comprehensively revised and updated edition of the original text with a foreword by Latin American history scholar Friedrich Katz and a new preface to the English edition by the author. A true "people's history," "The Mexican Revolution" is a stirring, bottom-up account of an event whose reverberations are still felt throughout Latin America and the rest of the world. What you didn't know about the Mexican Revolution: - In December 1914 the peasant armies of Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata conquered Mexico City and established a peasant government there. - Mexico's 1917 constitution granted the right of peasants and peasant communities to own the land they tilled. - Mexico's 1917 constitution established an eight-hour workday, a minimum wage, the rights to establish unions and to collectively bargain, and a right to strike--rights not seen in the United States until the 1930s and later.

Book excerpt: Gregorio Cortez Lira, a ranchhand of Mexican parentage, was virtually unknown until one summer day in 1901 when he and a Texas sheriff, pistols in hand, blazed away at each other after a misunderstanding. The sheriff was killed and Gregorio fled immediately, realizing that in practice there was one law for Anglo-Texans, another for Texas-Mexicans. The chase, capture, and imprisonment of Cortez are high drama that cannot easily be forgotten. Even today, in the cantinas along both sides of the Rio Grande, Mexicans sing the praises of the great "sheriff-killer" in the ballad which they call "El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez." Américo Paredes tells the story of Cortez, the man and the legend, in vivid, fascinating detail in "With His Pistol in His Hand," which also presents a unique study of a ballad in the making. Deftly woven into the story are interpretations of the Border country, its history, its people, and their folkways.

Book excerpt: The definitive history of the often forgotten U.S.-Mexican War paints an intimate portrait of the major players and their world—from Indian fights and Manifest Destiny, to secret military maneuvers, gunshot wounds, and political spin. “If one can read only a single book about the Mexican-American War, this is the one to read.” —The New York Review of Books Often overlooked, the U.S.-Mexican War featured false starts, atrocities, and daring back-channel negotiations as it divided the nation, paved the way for the Civil War a generation later, and launched the career of Abraham Lincoln. Amy S. Greenberg’s skilled storytelling and rigorous scholarship bring this American war for empire to life with memorable characters, plotlines, and legacies. Along the way it captures a young Lincoln mismatching his clothes, the lasting influence of the Founding Fathers, the birth of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and America’s first national antiwar movement. A key chapter in the creation of the United States, it is the story of a burgeoning nation and an unforgettable conflict that has shaped American history.
