Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forming Sleep asks how biocultural and literary dynamics act together to shape conceptions of sleep states in the early modern period. Engaging with poetry, drama, and prose largely written in English between 1580 and 1670, the essays in this collection highlight period discussions about how seemingly insentient states might actually enable self-formation. Looking at literary representations of sleep through formalism, biopolitics, Marxist theory, trauma theory, and affect theory, this volume envisions sleep states as a means of defining the human condition, both literally and metaphorically. The contributors examine a range of archival sources—including texts in early modern faculty psychology, printed and manuscript medical treatises and physicians’ notes, and printed ephemera on pathological sleep—through the lenses of both classical and contemporary philosophy. Essays apply these frameworks to genres such as drama, secular lyric, prose treatise, epic, and religious verse. Taken together, these essays demonstrate how early modern depictions of sleep shape, and are shaped by, the philosophical, medical, political, and, above all, formal discourses through which they are articulated. With this in mind, the question of form merges considerations of the physical and the poetic with the spiritual and the secular, highlighting the pervasiveness of sleep states as a means by which to reflect on the human condition. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume include Brian Chalk, Jennifer Lewin, Cassie Miura, Benjamin Parris, Giulio Pertile, N. Amos Rothschild, Garret A. Sullivan Jr., and Timothy A. Turner.

Written for Learners of English by William Shakespeare. There are broken hearts and kisses and then weddings, so this is a story about love. There are actors who are funny because they cannot act, so it is also a story that makes people laugh. And there are fairies, spirits of the night, so it is a story about mischief and magic too. What happens when love and laughter come together with magic in an Athenian forest? A Midsummer Night's Dream was written in about 1596 and is one of Shakespeare's most popular plays. It has been retold for Bookworms, not as a play, but as a story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comedy in two acts. Written by Shakespeare and Developed by Bedrettin.. The interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream takes a different approach to the essence of the original text, introducing several changes and rebuilding the play around a kind of fantasy based on strange realities such as déjà vu and disjunctive cognition, a bizarre phenomenon in dreams first identified by psychoanalyst Mark Blechner in which the dreamer recognizes the identity of a character even though the appearance does not match the identity. Some dialogue has been moved to be used in more appropriate situations. Some dialog has been condensed to make it shorter, more concise, witty, and functional. New lines have been added to better define the characters, intensify the conflict, and increase the dose of comedy. The plot has also been developed by adding more intrigue, more mischief, more magic and more humor. Always within the framework, the theme has been enriched with surprising variations. Visual and verbal elements related to dreams, love, marriage, etc. have been added to the subtext to make the play a multi-layered comedy more suitable for modern audiences.
