Book excerpt: This, the first of four volumes in the new Odeon series on continental philosophy, is an attempt to construe the interpretation of texts (ie the art of hermeneutics) as a political answer to a given historical situation. Professor Rosen views interpretation as the result neither of changing fashion nor of innocent playfulness, but rather as a self-conscious (even if disguised or concealed) political strategy. In this book, he discusses the German hermeneutical tradition, the Alexander Kojeve-Leo Straus relationship, and current leading continental and American philosophers such as Derrida and.

Book excerpt: Hermeneutic Philosophy is one of the most important currents of contemporary philosophy. This book presents the basic concepts necessary for a hermeneutic approach to politics and the political. It is here that the fundamental meaning of such categories as culture, nation, state, tradition, language, history as a community of fate appears. The author negates the postmodern character of this current and analyzes the place of the concept of freedom, and thus the relationship of Hermeneutic Philosophy to liberalism and republicanism. It is clear that the Hermeneutic Philosophy of politics supports the communal, republican attitude. The relationship between national sovereignty and European responsibility, in the context of the absolutisation of individual freedom, the criticism of the nation state and the family as the basic cell of social life, are reflected as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Postmodernity outlines in a clear and coherent manner the implications for political theory that are inherent in philosophical hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is not only a general theory of human understanding, it is also, in terms of its practical consequences, a general Theory of Democracy. This book demonstrates, with reference to current debates, how hermeneutical theory provides the ultimate philosophical justification for democratic practice and universal human rights. One of the book's most significant features is the way in which it attempts to work through postmodernism and the way in which throughout it shows how hermeneutics, while fully a form of `postmodern' thought, is nevertheless distinctive in this regard in eschewing all forms of relativism and in resolutely defending a nonessentialist universalism. This book will be of interest to all those concerned with the fate of the core values traditionally defended by philosophy and, indeed, with the future of philosophy itself after postmodernity.

Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the question of democratic politics by proposing a hermeneutic conception of citizenship and the public sphere. At the same time, it presents a critique of the postmodern arguments advanced by Richard Rorty, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Jean Baudrillard. Questioning a dominant interpretation that sees Gadamer's hermeneutics as the expression of a conservative project, Alejandro argues that it includes an important element of critique that could challenge dominant structures and practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While claiming that liberalism is the dominant political theory and practice of modernity, this book provides two alternative post-modern theoretical approaches to the political. Concentrating on Nietzsche's and Foucault's work it offers a novel interpretation of their genealogical projects. It argues that genealogy can be applied to analyze different forms of cultural kitsch vis-à-vis the dominant political institutions of consumer capitalism. The problem with consumer capitalism is not so much that it exploits individuals, but that it fosters cheap human existence saturated with the artefacts of kitsch. Contrasting genealogy with hermeneutic philosophy, it calls for a renewal of hermeneutics within the Thomistic tradition.

Book excerpt: In Wo/men, Scripture, and Politics, Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, brings to bear years of trailblazing scholarship of feminist thought and hermeneutics onto the current political and cultural landscape. In this book, she seeks to articulate and use biblical interpretation as intervention into the failure of the democratic cultural-political imagination. Although such an intervention is often taboo for supposedly neutral academic scholarship, Schüssler Fiorenza argues that it is politically necessary because political argument today so often utilizes biblical rhetoric in the public square. e biblical-political analysis and suggestions of this book are developed in four chapters, each focusing on the role of the Bible in struggles over women’s leadership in the present, touching on the cultural “double bind” of women in politics, sexual abuse, power, and the #MeToo movement. Schüssler Fiorenza’s insights and arguments not only lead to the development of reimagined cultural biblical imprints of women in the political arena, but they also encourage her readers to add their own biblical examples to inspire them in their struggle for a biblical vision of “women in the public square.” is is an insightful, challenging book written for our time by someone who has always seemed to be ahead of hers.

Ambiguity of Human Speech.--Processes of Formation of Words.--Necessity of always leaving much to be understood by Interpretation.--Not to be avoided by Specification and Amplification.--Causes of Ambiguity in the Language, the Utterer, the Change of Circumstances.--Desire of avoiding different Interpretation.--Prohibition of Commentaries.--Napoleon's View.--Interpretation cannot be dispensed with.--Civil Liberty demands Independence of the Judiciary, of the Law.--Correct Interpretation more necessary in free Countries than in States not free. I. If Interpretation is the discovery of the true sense of words, it is presumed that this sense is not obvious; for, that which must be discovered or found out, must needs be hidden in some way or other before it is discovered. Yet words signify ideas or things, and how does it happen, that, if used for the very purpose of conveying our ideas, they can leave any doubt? The ambiguity of human speech is owing to a vast variety of causes, at times intentional, at others unintentional, avoidable or unavoidable, owing to the ulterer, to the words or the situation of things and their changes. The most common or most important causes will be given here, and it is necessary to weigh them well, since many errors in the highest spheres of politics and law have arisen from an insufficient consideration of these causes, and a consequent belief, which still manifests itself not unfrequently in many, that ambiguity can be entirely avoided, or that certain instruments of the gravest import do not contain any, and, consequently do not require interpretation. ii. In no case are words, originally, produced in a finished state by the reflecting intellect, and consciously affixed to objects, presenting themselves to...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having lost much of its political clout and theoretical power, communism no longer represents an appealing alternative to capitalism. In its original Marxist formulation, communism promised an ideal of development, but only through a logic of war, and while a number of reformist governments still promote this ideology, their legitimacy has steadily declined since the fall of the Berlin wall. Separating communism from its metaphysical foundations, which include an abiding faith in the immutable laws of history and an almost holy conception of the proletariat, Gianni Vattimo and Santiago Zabala recast Marx’s theories at a time when capitalism’s metaphysical moorings—in technology, empire, and industrialization—are buckling. While Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri call for a return of the revolutionary left, Vattimo and Zabala fear this would lead only to more violence and failed political policy. Instead, they adopt an antifoundationalist stance drawn from the hermeneutic thought of Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida, and Richard Rorty. Hermeneutic communism leaves aside the ideal of development and the general call for revolution; it relies on interpretation rather than truth and proves more flexible in different contexts. Hermeneutic communism motivates a resistance to capitalism’s inequalities yet intervenes against violence and authoritarianism by emphasizing the interpretative nature of truth. Paralleling Vattimo and Zabala’s well-known work on the weakening of religion, Hermeneutic Communism realizes the fully transformational, politically effective potential of Marxist thought.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legal and Political Hermeneutics, or Principles of Interpretation and Construction in Law and Politics: With Remarks on Precedents and Authorities Adding some remarks, which appear to me of sufficient importance, to enlarge the chapter on precedents, and to add a new one on authorities. Ihave re-written the whole, as a superficial comparison will show, and here lay the result of my labors before the reader. May it do some good. Whether I have succeeded or not, I believe it will be granted on all hands, that the subject is a very important one, and that in coun tries, as the United States and England, in which civil liberty teaches the citizen to look for one of its great protections in the exact administration of the laws, and a careful avoidance of constant explanation not interpretation, Of the laws by the Public Power in countries, in which the law is allowed to make its own way, immutable principles and fixed rules for interpreting and construing them, should be generally acknowledged, or if they exist already, in a scattered state, should be gathered and clearly represented, so that they may establish themselves along with the laws, as part and branch of the common law Of free countries.
