Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study is the first book to provide a complete survey of Śrī Nālandā Mahāvihāra from the perspective of its educational curricula as well as its religious influence. It provides detailed descriptions of the origin, growth, management, and academic and cultural life of Nālandā, with particular attention to its pedagogy, curriculum, teachers, and students. It also presents an alternative interpretation of nationalist and popular notions about Śrī Nālandā as an international university and proves that it was, at its core, a Buddhist monastery and an institution of Buddhist learning focused on the study and promotion of Buddhism.

Book Synopsis Decolonising Heritage in South Asia by : Himanshu Prabha Ray
Download or read book Decolonising Heritage in South Asia written by Himanshu Prabha Ray and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume cross-examines the stability of heritage as a concept. It interrogates the past which materialises through multi-layered narratives on monuments and other objects that sustain cultural diversity. It seeks to understand how interpretations of “monuments” as “texts” are affected at the local level of experience, even as institutions such as UNESCO work to globalise and fix constructs of stable and universal heritage. Shifting away from a largely Eurocentric concept associated with architecture and monumental archaeology, this book reassesses how local and regional heritage needs to be balanced with the global and transnational. It argues that material objects and monuments are not static embodiments of culture but are, rather, a medium through which identity, power and society are produced and reproduced. This is especially relevant in South and Southeast Asian contexts, where debates over heritage often have local, regional and national political implications and consequences. Reevaluating how traditional valuation of monuments and cultural landscapes could help aid sustainability and long-term preservation of the heritage, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of South and Southeast Asian history, heritage studies, archaeology, cultural studies, tourism studies and political history as well.
Book Synopsis Records, Recoveries, Remnants and Inter-Asian Interconnections by : Anjana Sharma
Download or read book Records, Recoveries, Remnants and Inter-Asian Interconnections written by Anjana Sharma and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Records, Recoveries, Remnants and Inter-Asian Interconnections: Decoding Cultural Heritage has its conceptual core the inter-regional networks of Nalanda Mahavihara and its unique place in the Asian imaginary. The revival of Nalanda university in 2010 as a symbol of a shared inter-Asian heritage is this collection’s core narrative. The multidisciplinary essays interrogate ways in which ideas, objects, texts, and travellers have shaped — and in turn have been shaped by — changing global politics and the historical imperative that underpins them. The question of what constitutes cultural authenticity and heritage valuation is inscribed from positions that support, negate, or reframe existing discourses with reference to Southeast and East Asia. The essays in this collection offer critical, scholarly, and nuanced views on the vexed questions of regional and inter-regional dynamics, of racial politics and their flattening hegemonic discourses in relation to the rich tangible and intangible heritage that defines an interconnected Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the legacy of Nalanda, the home of the world's first residential university (c. AD 450), this book celebrates the state of Bihar that completed its centenary in 2012. It narrates the story of the confluence of many belief systems- Buddhism, Jainism, Sufism, and Hinduism-and showcases the heritage of Nalanda. Affording insights into archaeological sites, such as the ruins of Nalanda University, Ashokan stupas at Girijak, the Cyclopean walls, the Swarna Bhandar, the Maniyar Math, Jarasandh ka Akhada [Banquet Hall of King Jarasandh], King Bimbisara's Jail, Teladhaka monastery, and the antiquities found in the village Jiar among others, the work provides a comprehensive picture of Nalanda and its surroundings. With around 160 colour photographs melding into one another, the volume creates a rare visual continuity perhaps experienced only in motion pictures.

Book Synopsis Geographical Thoughts in India by : Rana Singh
Download or read book Geographical Thoughts in India written by Rana Singh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with roots of Indian geographical thoughts with reference to its historical base, cultural context and visionary message. As a consequence of long cultural history the resultant lifeworld in India converges like a drama and dance of space-time function with transference and transformation. In the passage of time emerged a metaphysical frame of thought, the varieties of heritagescapes, and simultaneously grown the senses to heritage ecology. Of course, attempts have been scanty but the richness always portrayed in literature and literary geography. Historical and cultural geographies in India have not caught that much attention in the academia; however on micro-level distinct attributes are interpreted in the recent literature. Going back to the ancient notions of nature theology, religioscapes and rituals have developed a complex network of belief systems in the Hindu traditions. In these traditions the motherly river Ganga serves as symbol, system and metaphor in the Indian culture. Continuity of cultural manifestations is actively maintained and continued in the Indian villages, where lives three-fourths of India’s population, and serve like a ‘place ballet’. India’s catastrophic march on the road of development and technology is entangled with obstacles and socio-spatial gaps that need to be re-considered in the light of cultural background and historical legacy. All these issues are examined, emphasising dualistic and complimentary perspectives in the West and the East.
