Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldic Book-Stamps: Figured and Described The large majority of the stamps illustrated herewith are' in the British Museum, but I have included a few in private ownership, and to these owners my sincere thanks are due for their kindness in allowing me to copy the various coats. I have in every case mentioned this private ownership, and where such mention is not found the book from which the drawing has been made is in the British Museum, either in the Department of Printed Books or in the Department of Manuscripts. Heraldry is of military origin, but its decorative side, and the various exact rules which govern it, were probably brought into use during the Middle Ages, in connection with the frequent Tournaments which were governed by strict rules. The ceremonies to be followed at the Tournaments were very closely laid down heralds as well as their assistants of all sorts came into much prominence, and personal insignia acquired an importance they have never had since. Even now there are a few signs of ancient personal heraldry existing in our army; crests and tartans of private families may be found among the Highland regiments, but the modern tendency, especially since the late war in South Africa, has been to abolish such peculiarities. During these enterprises great changes took place in the weapons and armours used. These changes and the various forms of crosses that were adopted (see chapter V) without doubt had their in uence on the heraldry of a later date. Yet the only relation that any of these may claim to heraldry is that they were symbolical devices carried by warriors to distinguish one group from another they were in no sense a shield of arms, as they possessed no hereditary character. Although there are depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry, illustrating the Norman conquest, knights with banners and shields charged with various emblems, most authorities agree that at this period no form of heraldic science existed; indeed, it was not until the second half of the twelfth century that coats of arms, as we know them, came into being; and it was not until the thirteenth century that they were governed by a code of rules and the Science of Heraldry definitely established. At this period heraldry held such a place in the hearts of the popu lace that even those oi little education were well acquainted with its language and meaning, they, having so to speak, grown up together. For in war was the beginning of all our heraldry. It belongs now to peace. War-paint is the dingiest hue of the palette. The fighting ships go out of port without any of the old braveries of figure-head and stern-gallery on which carver and painter had done gay work. The scarlet of the king's coat has shrunk to a collar - patch: the banners stand no more with the English battle: the men who fight in the burrowing warfare of trench and sap are clad in the livery of the mud about them. For the last armorial badges we must look closely to those poor 'devices which the button-maker's cramped art has stamped out according to the sealed patterns of the War Office. Very poor and meanly devised are those little regimental badges. Yet something of the potency of the old charm remains with them: pride goes with the swan that was Bohun's swan: a Staffordshire man will do honour to the knot on his cap and collar, the knot that was Stafford's long before the soldier had his first musket.
