A new translation of Dostoevsky's epic masterpiece, Crime and Punishment (1866). The impoverished student Raskolnikov decides to free himself from debt by killing an old moneylender, an act he sees as elevating himself above conventional morality. Like Napoleon he will assert his will and his crime will be justified by its elimination of 'vermin' for the sake of the greater good. But Raskolnikov is torn apart by fear, guilt, and a growing conscience under the influence of his love for Sonya. Meanwhile the police detective Porfiry is on his trial. It is a powerfully psychological novel, in which the St Petersburg setting, Dostoevsky's own circumstances, and contemporary social problems all play their part.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rodion Raskolnikov is young, poor... and ambitious. He is convinced of the idea that "big people" must take what is rightfully theirs and that this distinguishes them from the "little people". They are even allowed to destroy "life unworthy of life". He argues with commanders like Napoleon: if they leave the field as victors, history remembers their great deeds and not the many thousands of murders that went along with them. When, with this thought in his heart, he kills an old usurper and her sister, however, he realizes that the human psyche does not readily embrace this tangled logic. Gröls Classics - English Edition

But when talk of the unsolved murders consumes the city, Raskolnikov's guilt overtakes him and he wanders the streets in a feverish state, leading police detective Porfiry suspect his involvement. As the investigation closes in on him, Raskolnikov seeks solace in the company of Sonya, a virtuous prostitute who urges him to confess his crime and seek redemption. Crime and Punishment is a revealing portrait of a man confronting, for the first time, his morality and the moral consequences of his actions. The novel is widely recognized as author Fyodor Dostoyevsky's argument against the radical behaviours practised by nineteenth-century Russian Nihilists. Be it mystery, romance, drama, comedy, politics, or history, great literature stands the test of time.
