In 1914, war in Europe feels far away to most of the people in Fleta Jaeger’s social circle—but not to Fleta, whose beloved cousin is studying in England. Fleta attempts to disguise her fear with too much gaiety and drink, but her friends and family begin to worry about her. Julian Prebensen, Fleta’s father’s favorite employee sees she’s vulnerable and embarks on a scheme to win her for himself—and if her father’s successful shipping company comes with her, all the better. Fleta resists, and her resistance results in her living as a virtual prisoner in her parents’ lavish home. Grantham Northrup, who has known Fleta since childhood and loved her for years, realizes he must take action to save the woman he loves from a dubious fate. But when Fleta flees with her mother’s jewels, and no one knows where she’s gone, it’s a race between Julian and Grantham to see who will find her first. This is book two in Lakeside Lovers series and can be enjoyed independently. Publisher’s Note: This historical romance is intended for adults only and contains elements of suspense, sensual themes, danger, adult themes, possible triggers and power exchange. Book Synopsis The Goddess as Role Model by : Heidi R.M. Pauwels
Download or read book The Goddess as Role Model written by Heidi R.M. Pauwels and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to understand the major mythological role models that mark the moral landscape navigated by young Hindu women. Traditionally, the goddess Sita, faithful consort of the god Rama, is regarded as the most important positive role model for women. The case of Radha, who is mostly portrayed as a clandestine lover of the god Krishna, seems to challenge some of the norms the example of Sita has set. That these role models are just as relevant today as they have been in the past is witnessed by the popularity of the televised versions of their stories, and the many allusions to them in popular culture. Taking the case of Sita as main point of reference, but comparing throughout with Radha, Pauwels studies the messages sent to Hindu women at different points in time. She compares how these role models are portrayed in the most authoritative versions of the story. She traces the ancient, Sanskrit sources, the medieval vernacular retellings of the stories and the contemporary TV versions as well. This comparative analysis identifies some surprising conclusions about the messages sent to Indian women today, which belie the expectations one might have of the portrayals in the latest, more liberal versions. The newer messages turn out to be more conservative in many subtle ways. Significantly, it does not remain limited to the religious domain. By analyzing several popular recent and classical hit movies that use Sita and Radha tropes, Pauwels shows how these moral messages spill into the domain of popular culture for commercial consumption.

Book Synopsis Rights and Urban Controversies in Hong Kong by : Betty Yung
Download or read book Rights and Urban Controversies in Hong Kong written by Betty Yung and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the “ethics in relation to city and urbanism” by evaluating the strengths and limitations of rights as a conceptual tool from the comparative East–West perspective in resolving urban controversies (involving conflicts of rights between different classes, different groups within the present generation, present vs future generations, human vs animals, human vs plants and nature), thereby facilitating urban policy-making and good urban governance. This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach integrating political theory, ethics, urban studies, public policy, making applications of ethics and political philosophy to social sciences to examine controversial urban issues in the Hong Kong context. It challenges the general conception that philosophy and ethics are detached from everyday life, with the philosophers engaging mainly in abstract intellectual pursuit and some of them even disdaining “pedestrian” applications of abstract thinking. This book makes applications of ethics and political philosophy to real-life urban contexts in Hong Kong, thereby trying to highlight the normative in order to throw new light to the general approach and strategy to deal with practical urban issues, facilitating “out-of-the-box” thinking in the field of housing and urban studies, stimulating scholars, researchers, and students in the fields, urban planners, urban managers, and other professionals as well as urban policy-makers.
