Book excerpt: When German planners decided that they needed an aircraft dedicated to a ground-attack role to disrupt and destroy troops on the ground in World War II, the twin-engined Henschel Hs 129 (nicknamed 'Panzerknacker', meaning tank cracker) was the result of their development efforts. This book covers the Hs 129's development and operational career and also provides numerous photos and illustrations detailing its camouflage schemes. Photos of the type in service and specially commissioned line drawings and color artworks illustrate all of the He 129's variants, including those that never left the drawing board. Many of these images are previously unpublished, making this book an essential addition to the limited range of publications available on this important aircraft type.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1943, Jack Colman changed from Liberators to Beaufighters and was selected for Torbeau training in Scotland. He joined a strike wing at North Coates attacking North Sea convoys off the coast of Holland. Later, Jack and his Beaufighter were sent to the Far East where he was deployed to fly out of Assam over Burma supporting the Forgotten Army. Midway through the tour, they converted to Mosquitoes - a change he was not particularly happy about. After a short rest converting pilots to Mosquitoes, he felt lucky to be put in charge of a small unit flying service personnel to various venues in southern India. Jack's enthusiasm for flying is maintained and his lucky escapes documented. His fascination with the cultural and social experiences gained in India leaves its mark as he comments on the privileges he experiences, now as a commissioned officer, and of the wealth chasm between the princes and the poor of India. This is a book not just about flying but how one man and his comrades lived through those unique and special times.

Book excerpt: The German bomber fleet operated as a terror weapon of the Nazi regime during the early years of the Second World War - bombing and killing thousands of innocent civilians during the Blitz. As the tide of battle turned, the Luftwaffe's attention was refocused on the deserts of North Africa and the frozen steppes of the Eastern Front, where bombers and ground-attack aircraft played a key role in supporting German army units.Luftwaffe Bombers offers more than 200 highly detailed full color profiles from world renowned artist Claes Sundin, covering all of Germany's most famous bomber, dive-bomber, close-support and ground-attack types - the Dornier Do 17 and Do 217, Heinkel He 111 and He 177, Junkers Ju 87, Ju 88 and Ju 188, Henschel Hs 123 and Hs 129, Focke-Wulf Fw 190, Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Me 262, and Arado 234.The markings of aircraft piloted by famous and infamous German bomber and anti-tank 'aces' such as Ju 87 tank-buster extraordinaire Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the leader of the world's first jet-bomber strike Dieter Lukesch and Hs 123 Knight's Cross holder Josef'Bazi' Menapace are meticulously reproduced, based on original photographs, alongside a wide range of schemes from every year of the war and every front.Offering a host of different color schemes and detailed notes, this is indispensable reading for enthusiasts and modelers alike

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1943, the Luftwaffe began using radio-controlled anti-ship glide bombs and within weeks they had sunk one battleship, crippled another, wrecked two cruisers, and destroyed numerous merchant ships. Yet, a year later the Germans abandoned their use, defeated by scientists who developed electronic systems to jam the radio links that guided the bombs. Drawing on a wealth of new sources, Martin Bollinger examines what happened from both a historical and technological perspective and lays out a mission-by-mission analysis of effectiveness. Based on interviews with participants, intelligence documents, and archival records in four countries, his book chronicles the yearlong battle between the Allied seamen (the warriors) and the scientists (the wizards) for a story of courage, technical achievement, and sacrifice.

This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Henschel Hs 129 was a World War II ground-attack aircraft fielded by the German Luftwaffe. Its nickname, the Panzerknacker (tank cracker), is a deliberate pun-in German, it also means "safe cracker." In combat service the Hs 129 lacked a sufficient chance to prove itself; the aircraft was produced in relatively small numbers and deployed during a time when the Luftwaffe was unable to protect them from attack. "The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 was politically the opening stage of an overall world conflagration. From a military point of view, the conflict was a unique chance for the involved parties to experiment with the latest war doctrines, particularly the large-scale use of air power. Spain was also an ideal testing ground for a large variety of innovative warfare technologies, including combat aircraft. It was also in Spain that the need for close air-support for one's own advancing or retreating combat troops had first emerged. The task of destroying fixed or slowly moving smaller targets such as ships, for example, was solved by employing the dive-bombing technique with its pinpoint accuracy, carried out by the Sturzkampfflugzeug, or Stuka - as the famous, or infamous, Junkers Ju 87 is widely known. However, the neutralization of fast and manoeuvrable small objects - tanks and other armoured or soft-skinned vehicles, as well as groups of mounted enemy troops - had been only partially resolved by the use of biplanes of older types - for example, the Heinkel He 51, or the Henschel Hs 123 (the initial Stuka) - as ground attack aircraft. As proven in Spain, these obsolescent airplanes were not fully suited to the task assigned to them, being rather slow, lightly armed and non-armoured, thus vulnerable to ground fire. The experience in the Spanish war theatre highlighted the need for a well protected and heavily armed specialized Schlachtflugzeug (ground attack aircraft). The existence of such a dedicated aircraft type was fully justified by the apparent necessities of the modern, fast-changing battlefield with flexible front lines, in contrast to the mostly fixed trench warfare, which characterized the 'Great War'.

Book excerpt: Renowned German aviation specialist Manfred Griehl has collected a unique and valuable selection of photographs of Luftwaffe projects that never made it into battle. They remained on the drawing board or at prototype stage either because they were deemed unsuitable or the developers simply ran out of time and the projects never went into production. Most photographs come from the development sites and testing grounds of the major manufacturers of Nazi Germany: companies such as Dornier, Junkers, Focke-Wulf and Heinkel all received funding from the government to develop bigger and faster aircraft. A huge amount of private testing went on with major organizations such as Daimler-Benz, BMW and Siemens investing huge amounts in new engine systems and other advances such as radar. This book also details the innumerable alterations that were made to existing service aircraft to equip them for new roles. There are examples of Fw190s developed for the delivery of chemical and toxic weapons, the high altitude Junkers EF 61, the early prototype WNF 342 helicopter as well as numerous examples of developmental jet fighters that could very well have been realized had it not been for the effectiveness of the Allied bombing campaign in restricting the supply of necessary materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as one of the finest examples of aviation research, this comprehensive 1984 study presents a detailed and scrupulously accurate operational history of carrier-based air warfare. From the earliest operations in the Pacific through the decisive Battle of Midway, it offers a narrative account of how ace fighter pilots like Jimmy Thach and Butch O'Hare and their skilled VF squadron mates--called the "first team"--amassed a remarkable combat record in the face of desperate odds. Tapping both American and Japanese sources, historian John B. Lundstrom reconstructs every significant action and places these extraordinary fighters within the context of overall carrier operations. He writes from the viewpoint of the pilots themselves, after interviewing some fifty airmen from each side, to give readers intimate details of some of the most exciting aerial engagements of the war. At the same time he assesses the role the fighter squadrons played in key actions and shows how innovations in fighter tactics and gunnery techniques were a primary reason for the reversal of American fortunes. After more than twenty years in print, the book remains the definitive account and is being published in paperback for the first time to reach an even larger audience.

This book details the Schlacht units who were in the thick of the fighting from the first day of the war until the last. They played a vital part in the heady successes of the early Blitzkrieg campaigns and went on to perform an equally essential role in the dark hours of last ditch defence and ultimate defeat. In between, they fought in all defensive battles: on the eastern front at Stalingrad, Kursk and Berlin; in the west, by night, over Normandy, the Ardennes and the Rhine.
