Book excerpt: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” The man who uttered those famous words was compared with Christopher Columbus in his day and became one of the late nineteenth century’s most newsworthy figures. Yet, one hundred years after Henry Morton Stanley’s death, his accomplishments in Africa have largely receded from public memory or have been discredited as epitomizing the wrongs inflicted by the scourge of European colonialism and its “scramble for Africa.” While numerous writers have attempted to describe the man, sometimes through highly speculative means, our understanding of the most notable aspect of Stanley’s life, his relationship to the continent, isn’t much more advanced than it was one hundred years ago. To fill this void, James L. Newman re-creates Stanley’s seven epic African journeys, explaining why he made them, what transpired en route, and what resulted. He highlights Stanley’s determination to succeed despite incredible odds and his various relationships with the people who enabled him to accomplish his objectives. And while he acknowledges Stanley’s less admirable traits, such as his penchant for stretching the truth, his capacity to be ruthless, and his tendency to demean others, Newman refuses to engage in facile speculation. Instead, he focuses on the words and deeds of a man who played a major role in shaping today’s Africa. James L. Newman’s in-depth research, detailed descriptions, and vivid prose make Stanley and Africa both a fascinating read and a notable contribution to the study of Africa, exploration, and the age of empire.

Book excerpt: In 1874, Henry Morton Stanley set out on an expedition into the heart of Africa. For the next three years, he penetrated more deeply into the continent than any of his daring predecessors and aimed to set at rest certain problems which had long confused geographers about the African interior. In this remarkable journey Stanley along with his team travelled through regions hitherto unexplored by Europeans, found friendship and conflict with African kings, survived through some of the most inhospitable climates and withstood vicious diseases. It is a remarkable account of late nineteenth century exploration, undertaken shortly before the advent of the 'Scramble for Africa.' Beginning in Zanzibar, Stanley explored and mapped the vast landscape of Central Africa, locating the source of the Nile, circumnavigated Lake Victoria and travelled down the Congo river, meeting many fascinating and wealthy kings. The Spectator stated that readers should particularly enjoy "his glowing descriptions of the scenery and vegetation of some parts of his route, and especially of the grand country round the Great Lake; his portrait of the kopi, of Uganda, who is a remarkable study, and his account of the beautifully constructed dwellings and implements of the people." Through the Dark Continent is essential reading for anyone interested in nineteenth century Africa and the European explorers who travelled through it. Sir Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh-American nineteenth century explorer and writer. He famously found David Livingstone in the heart of Africa and stated, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" He was knighted in 1899 and died five years later. This book was published in 1878.

Book excerpt: Henry Morton Stanley was a cruel imperialist - a bad man of Africa. Or so we think: but as Tim Jeal brilliantly shows, the reality of Stanley's life is yet more extraordinary. Few people know of his dazzling trans-Africa journey, a heart-breaking epic of human endurance which solved virtually every one of the continent's remaining geographical puzzles. With new documentary evidence, Jeal explores the very nature of exploration and reappraises a reputation, in a way that is both moving and truly majestic.

Book excerpt: The astonishing life of Sir Henry Morton Stanley (born John Rowlands, 1841-1904), Welsh journalist, adventurer, and explorer is related here, beginning with his childhood and continuing through to his serving on both sides in the American Civil War, and his extensive explorations in Africa. It was these last adventures-which included a search for the origin of the Nile and a dramatic expedition to find the lost missionary and explorer David Livingstone, for which Stanley won the most fame. These African adventures also included his work in, and development of, the Congo Basin region in association with King Leopold II of Belgium, and his commanding the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, which was the last major European expedition into Africa in the nineteenth century, ostensibly to relieve the besieged governor of Equatoria. This expedition came to be both celebrated-for its ambition in crossing "darkest Africa"-and notorious, for causing the deaths of so many of its members and the disease unwittingly left in its wake. Stanley was one of the last great European explorers and adventurers, and was knighted for his feats. His daring tales of bravado, while struggling against seemingly impossible odds, will inspire the modern reader, young and old alike. Illustrated by L. D. Luard.

Book excerpt: Henry Stanley’s physical and mental toughness earned him the nickname Bula Matari, “Rock Breaker.” Although best known for finding the lost Scottish missionary David Livingstone, the explorer and journalist had many other adventures around the world. Born in Wales in 1841, he was placed in a workhouse by his uncle at the age of six. Stanley escaped nine years later and made his way to New Orleans by working as a cabin boy. He fought for the Confederacy and was taken prisoner at Shiloh, one of the Civil War’s bloodiest fights. After the war, Stanley discovered his talent for journalism and traveled thousands of miles to cover battles and other news. His abilities made him the perfect man to lead the New York Herald’s expedition to Africa to find Livingstone. The two men became friends, and when Livingstone died, Stanley felt it was his duty to continue his work, including the search for and confirmation of the Nile’s source. From 1874 to 1877, Stanley embarked on an expedition that mapped huge areas of central Africa. He encountered tribal warfare, exotic illnesses, and dense jungles, but nothing stopped him. On his last African journey, Stanley helped rescue a government official, Emin Pasha, who was trapped in Sudan during a revolt to drive Europeans and Egyptians out of the country. While on this expedition, Stanley located the fabled Mountains of the Moon, the ultimate source for the Nile.
